of potential blinding eye problems.
People interested in giving the
$25 gift of sight this Christmas can
send cheques to Operation Eyesight
Universal at 759 Warden Ave.,
Scarborough, Ont MIL 4135 or call
416-759-8011.
SCARBOROUGH_ - Searching
for the perfect Christmas gift is a
frustrating experience. Suddenly
the season of "peace on earth and
goodwill to all" leaves you tired,
frazzled and grumpy. Combine this
frustration with the country's eco-
nomic woes and it could add up to
a bleak Christmas.
"It doesn't have to be this way,"
says Tom Balke, Manager of the
Toronto Office of Operation Eye-
sight Universal. Balke says people
looking for a gift .to put some joy
back into Christmas need look no
further than the numerous alterna-
tive gifts offered by Canadian char-
ities.
People are becoming more inter-
ested in gifts with real value. In the
80's, we were very possession -
oriented. A recent Time/CNN poll
shows that people are now less in-
terested in status symbol products
and prefer items that give real satis-
faction. And in today's recession -
ravaged economy, people appre- store sight to one blind person in
ciate the tax receipt for their dona- the developing world in someone
tion as well, else's name.
Operation Eyesight will send a
Christmas card to the person you
name with information about the
person restored to sight through
your donation. Donors will receive
a tax receipt for the full value of
their gift.
Last Christmas, Canadians spent
four billion dollars on presents,
wrappings and decorations. In
1990, Canadians donated 4.7 bil-
lion to charity.*
Charities give people a chance to
buy an excellent present and give to
a worthy cause all at the same time.
It's also a great way to avoid the
Christmas crowds - in many cases,
all you have to do is phone to order
your gift.
In their recent book "Under The
Tree, Creative Alternatives To A
Consumer Christmas", David and
Elizabeth Morley show that "gifts
that give twice" are the perfect al-
ternative for people who are trying
to save money and give a meaning-
ful present.
Take Operation Eyesight for ex-
ample. For a $25 donation, Opera-
tion Eyesight Universal lets you re -
"Think about it this way," says
Balke, "Would you rather buy an-
other neck tie or a soap on a rope
for someone this year or give the
precious gift of sight in their name.
For me it's an easy choice. Not o(tly
will the person who receives the
card be thrilled, someone in the de-
veloping world will receive the
greatest gift of all - their sight."
Operation Eyesight Universal is a
Canadian charity. In its 28 year his-
tory, OEU has restored more than
one million people to sight through
cataract surgery and has treated
Osborne 1 Dairy Dudes
EXETER -
On Monday,
November
11, the Us -
borne Dairy
Dudes held
their last
meeting at
Becky
Case's dairy
farm.
At the beginning of the meeting the members
toured through the Eden Villa Barn. Doug Case dem-
onstrated how to put a milker on a cow. Deb Case
gave a tour through the cooler room. She showed
where the milk went when a cow was being milked.
She also told how the cooler worked.
The meeting reconvened in the house. Becky Case
called the meeting to order. After repeating the 4-H
pledge the roll call was said which was one new thing
that was discovered about dairy products during the
project. Laureen Bott said the minutes of the fifth
meeting. A survey was taken of four days menus to
see if they consisted of all food groups. Reasons were
given as to why one was better than the others. Hot
cocoa was made as a special treat. The members dis-
cul;Sed what they were going to do for the achieve-
ment program which is on Monday, November 25.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:0 0 p.m.
