Stephen Novice Kings crowned at Batten Tournament
SPORT.
EXETER - From the opening faceoff the novice final
was a thriller and In the end it was the Stephen Township
Kings edging the `Medford Lumberjacks 4-3.
The Kings started the three-day tournament with a 6-2
win over New Hamburg followed by a very close 6-5
game against Smithville. Thedford opened the champion-
ship game when Edward Campbell came down the right
wing, slid it to Wesley Wilcox who shot and Jamie
Johnston pounced on the rebound
It was 2-0 on a shorthanded -effort, prob-
ably the nicest goal of the tournament
when Johnston had Stephen goalie Robbie Connor make the first move,
centred it to Campbell who put it in the open side.
"We usually come out and do that," said Kings' coach Dan Conner of
the quick start. "We've been down before and came back."
But the Kings pulled to within a goal when Jeremy VanBergen scored
on a scramble and then it was all tied up when Jeff Finkbeiner took the
puck at the red line, went in on Chad Ryan and after a great deke, scored
on a backhander.
After VanBergen's goal, the Kings came to life scoring three times and
taking a big 4-2 as JR Davies banked one off of Ryan and then Fmkbeiner
connected after a Shawn Sherwood shot was gobbled up by VanBergen
who got it to Davies in front.
Thedford pulled to within a goal with 30 seconds left in the second
frame when Campbell went in on a breakaway. The game was almost tied
but Johnson'shot high with two ticks left.
The third period belonged to Conner as he made several big saves as
there was no scoring in the final 15 minute period. Besides Conner, de-
fencemen Adam McCann, Sherwood and Davies stopped Johnson three
consecutive rushes.
Johnson, Campbell and Tyler Faulds dominated the offense for Thed-
ford throughout the tournament but were stopped.
"They had to key on them the whole game." said Conner.
Robbie Conner was mobbed by his teammates at the end of the game as
he was named the MW for Stephen in the final game while the Kings
captain Sherwood was the MVP of the tournament. Johnston was the
Thedford MVP in the finale.
"If the offence isn't doing their job, the defence takes over," said Conner
who was very pleased of how his son played in net.
Against New Hamburg Saturday afternoon, the Kings took a 5-0 lead
before New Hamburg could get on the scoreboard. Connecting for the
Kings were Finkbeiner and Danny Mosurinjohn each with a pair, Sher-
wood and VanBergen.
Trailing by a goal in the semi-final against Smithville, Sherwood and
Finkbeiner scored late in the game. Finkbeiner fired the hat trick, Sher-
wood netted a pair while Vanbergen also scored.
The Kings'assistant coach is Dick Lord with help running the lines from
Les Sherwood and Bob Finkbeiner.

Exeter peewees edged in finale
EXETER - Last year the Exeter
peewees made it to the 'B' final of
the annual novice/atom/peewee
hockey tournament, this year they
made it all the way to the 'A' title
but unfortunately had to finish for
second best.
Sunday night at the South Huron
Recreation Centre, the Legion pee-
wees were beaten 2-1 by New
Hamburg in a game that saw a lot
bf good solid body checks.
The final game of the Exeter Mi-
nor Hockey Tournament had every-
thing from the big checks, and out-
standing goaltending to a cliff
hanger conclusion.
New Hamburg opened the scor-
ing when T.J. Schippling scored on
a wraparound which caught Exeter
goalie Jason Lindenfield off guard.
"Jason played well, the first goal
was kind of soft," said Exeter coach
Dave Partridge.
With 3:40 left in_ be first per
Bxcter enceman Mark Bell went
gndtto-end scoring on Jamie Alex -
*der to tie the game.
'What proved to be the winning
goal carne just seconds after Alex-
ander made a big save which
sparked Jeremy Moss to go down
and score at the other end of the
rink.
"I think we outplayed them but
we didn't get the breaks," said Par-
tridge.
Playing against a bigger team,
Exeter rose to the physical chal-
lenge and proved they could give
out just as many hits.
Jeff Sararas, not known for his
body -checking got physical and
captain Mike France gave probably
the biggest hit of the tournament
when he slammed Jesse Ullman.
France had a chance to tie the
game at two each after he went up
the ice, going around a couple of
New Hamburg players, but couldn't
get the puck in the net.
Two big wins: Exeter started the
three-day tournament with a 7-1
win over Thedford which saw Jeff
MacLean and France score two

lan and Sararas each with two, Da-
vid Farquhar, Bryce Hann and
Brian Richardson also scored.
"I knew we couldn't let up in
those games," said Partridge.
The B' final was won by Parkhill
who trailed Port Stanley 3-0 at the
end of the first period but chipped
away making it 3-2 at the end of
the second frame.
