On Thursday, the ladies of the
Grand Bend Women's Institute held
their meeting, at the Bluewater Re-
cycling Plant outside of Grand
Bend.
Members viewed a tape which
stressed the throe R's, reusing, re-
ducing and recycling. A representa-
tive explained to the ladies that the
Blue Box is not the total answer,
but that it served as a tool to get
people to think about the amount of
garbage they are producing.
There are 40 municipalities in-
volved in the Bluewater service and
30 of those are presently serviced
by the eight trucks and over 22 em-
ployees, in an area from Goderich
to South Lambton. The company
gives the municipalities the guaran-
tee that everything in the blue box
is recycled, except for a few con-
taminants which are removed on
the line.
There are two types of service
provided, curb service and depot
service. Their trucks have four
compartment for 1) Plastics, alumi-
num and steel; 2) Clear glass; 3)
Coloured glass and 4) Newspapers.
The W.I. ladies were taken on a
tour of the plant and saw how all
the recyclable products were separ-
ated and carried to the bins desig-
nated for aluminum, steel, clear
glass, coloured glass, newspapers
and plastics. Then, the products
were baled and shipped to the ap-
propriate companies.
After the tour, the ladies returned
to the Board Room, to hold a short
business meeting. Doris Bestard
read the minutes of the September
meeting and gave the treasurer's re-
port Everyone answered the roll
call by naming a product that was
over packaged. Donna Lovie and
Nola Taylor reported on a few
highlights of the Rally. Workshops
in Clinton were discussed and a do-
nation was given to Survival
Through Friendship House.
