- Jim -freeman, 'father fhkey'
Jim Freeman, let; is congratulated by Chris Haskett for
his many years of contribution to the Lucan Minor Hockey
Association.
LUCAN - He is called the fa-
ther of minor hockey in Lucan.
After playing hockey in Wood-
stock and Norwich, Jim Freeman
moved to Lucan in 1949 and
played intermediate for the Lucan
Irish Six.
Freeman, still an executive
member with the Lucan Junior 'D'
Irish, was presented with a banner
on Friday night to acknowledge
his 1958-59 all -Ontario midget
championship team.
The banner was donated by Kay
Haskell and presented to Freeman
during the Junior 'D' reunion
game by her grandson, Chris.
Freeman started the bantam
team in Lucan and at one time
was coaching both the midget and
juvenile teams. An original mem-
ber of the 'group which organized
the Shamrock League, he was al-
ways available to drive players,
whether or not on his team, to
games.
While his accomplishments and
the honors presented to him are
many, none is more prestigious
than being awarded the Ontario
Hockey Association's Golden
Stick in 1989.
Freeman was, and still, is a very
dedicated member of the hockey
community in Lucan of which he
was the chairman of the minor as-
sociation for 17 years.

Too much violence In hockey

player. Where is the reward to so-
ciety, to parents and to teenagers if
there is no teaching or learning of
co-operativeness, respectfulness,
sportsmanship, and tolerance? Our
own governments in a time of high
taxes and high debt are spending
large sums of tax dollars to educate
everyone about violence as a crime
and that people should be more tol-
erant of others.
We can playa part in making
hockey safer for everyone. Good
hockey can be played without
fighting and violence. We can in-
sist that violence not be tolerated
in any area of society so that young
people will learn a consistent s -
sage that violence is wrong.
In closing, many peop were an-
gry, upset, frustrated and perplexed
in Goderich tonight.
As one young boy at the arena
said, "Goderich won tonight." "I'm
not sure anyone won tonight", I re-
sponded.
He looked at me while puzzling
over my comment and he turned to
his friend and asked, "The score
was 5 to 1 for Goderich, wasn't it?"
I said, "Yes, the score was 5 to 1
for Goderich."
My last two questions about this
issue are. How many other arenas
Junior 'D' roundup
Hawks give up seven second period goals
By Ray Lewis
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks
seem content to play '.500 hockey,
as they again split a pair of week-
end games. Following a great team
effort Friday night at home, against
Mt. Brydges, the Hawks shot them-
selves in the foot Saturday against
the Lambeth Lancers, giving up
seven second period goals and
dropping their OHA Development
(Junior D') game 10-6 in Exeter.
"We made a lot of mental er-
rors," said a disappointed John Ker -
nick, coach of the Exeter squad.
After six games the Hawks sit
tied for fourth with Pt. Stanley,
four points back of first place
Lambeth. Penalties have proven
costly gdr. the Hawks in each of
their three losses, and powerplay
goals Saturday a:•: in put Exeter be-
hind the eight ball.
The Hawks have already lost six
man games due to suspensions, and
can tack on two more as centre
Derek Shackleton was ejected Sat-
urday after being issued a pair in
addition to defenseman Jamie Cor-
nish, who is currently sitting a two
game suspension following as inci-
dent against Mt. Brydges.
Exeter 6, Lambeth 10
Exeter came out of the gate in a
hurry Saturday night as Ray Cousi-
neau set up Shackleton just 25 sec-
onds into the game. Lambeth then
surged ahead scoring three times,
but second period goals by Shawn
Chipchase and Counsineau tied
things up in the second.
Shackleton was then issued two
minor penalties and the Lancers
made good on both to take a 5-3
lead. With the locals down 6-3,
some good pressure by Shayne
Robinson paid off when he fed
Steve Vandenberk who scored from
the point to bring them within two.
Lambeth struck once more before
the end of the period, as goaltender
John Teahen was beaten on a
breakaway after replacing Clint
McCann.
The teams then traded goals in
the third period, with Paul Manders
and Andrew Barton scoring for Ex-
eter. For Barton it was his fust goal
of the season since his return form
a txoken collar bone.
Also dressed Saturday night were
midgets Steve Farquhar and Mark
Glavin, called up to plug holes left
by injuries.
"They sure didn't hurt us," said
Kenrick. "We were pretty im-
pressed with their performance and
effort."
Hawks 9, Bulldogs 2
The Exeter Hawks sparkled Fri-
day night in their first home game
since their opener October 5. Cou-
sineau and Scott Schiedel each net-
ted a pair of goals as the Hawks
downed the visiting Bulldogs 9-2.
Exeter got powerplay goals from
Cousineau, Schiedel and Shawn
Chipchase, while defensively Larry
Lewis and Vendenberk had strong
games. Goaltender Clint McCann
kicked out 23 shots during the con-'
test.
Rounding out the scoring for the
Hawks were Shayne Robinson,
Lewis and Shackleton.

MT. BRYDGEST- Although the
first period was scoreless, the Lu -
can Irish exploded in the next 40
minutes to down the host Mt.
Brydges Bulldogs 9-1 in OHA De-
velopment (Junior 'D') hockey ac-
tion Friday night.
The Irish take their undefeated 3-
0-1 record back to Lucan for to-
night's game against Seaforth and
Friday, travel to Exeter to take on
their arch rivals, the Hawks.
While the offence was firing on
all cylinders Friday in Mt. Brydges,
at the other end of the rink, Irish
goalie Mark Dunn made his first
start of the season and just missed
getting a shutout.
Hawks and Irish
meet Friday
EXETER - The rivalry between the Exeter Hawks and the Lucan
Irish continues this weekend as the two OHA Development (Junior 'D')
teams faceoff at the South Huron Recreation Centre in Exeter at 8:30
p.m.
Before taking on the Seaforth Centennaires on Wednesday, the Irish
were undefeated at 3-0-1 while the Hawks are playing .500 hockey at
3-3.
in their opening four games, Greg DePrest, Jason Wilson, Darren
Neil, Ed VanKerkoerle and Steve Matthews are the goal scoring lead-
ers.
Suspensions are already hurting the Hawks as Jamie Cornish and
John Bell sat out Saturday's game but are expected back on Friday. In-
juries have Derek Shackleton and rookie Dan Ryan on the shelf.
Shackleton has an injured hand and he's sitting out due to a suspen-
sion, Ryan has a broken bone in his leg and is out for minimum six
weeks.
The line of Scott Schiedel, Ray Cousineau and Dave Dalrymple has
accounted for 12 of the team's 23 goals. CousTnif Ikeda the way with
eight goals and six assists.

"At the end of the first period I
was thinking about getting a shut-
out," said Dunn.
The only goal came in the closing
minutes of the game when Bull-
dogs' Shawn Taylor let one go from
the point that deflected off of
Dunn's stick and into the top cor-
ner.
With returnee Bob Szabo expect-
ed to get a lot of the work between
the pipes and Dan Jenken available
occasionally, for the second year
Dunn is in a three -goalie arrange-
ment.
"This is my chance to show peo-
ple what 1 can do," said Dunn who
spent a lot of time on his game dur-
ing the off-season.
Lucan coach _Ken Needham said
he has seen a lot of improvement in
the young goaltender.
"He's better all around and he's
not nervous," said Needham.
Jon McEachem led the offence
with a goal and three assists. He
teamed with speedy Greg Muir for
a couple of tallies and the duo
looked pretty good together. How-
ever, Needham said he has not set
lines yet.
"We've been mixing it (lines) up.
We don't know what we're going to
do yet."
Besides McEachem's goal, Muir
and Jason Wilson each had two•
with singles from Greg DePrest,
Dean Hammond, Darren Neil and
Ed VanKerkoede.
The score was 5-0 after the sec-
ond period following a very slow
but hard-hitting first frame.
"I can't figure that out. It was like
a playoff game but we did have n
couple of chances," said Needham
Lucky charms:...The Irish have
announced that this year's captain is
Andy Ross while McEachem and
Kevin Leitch are the assistants.
