Kinsmen Toy Tractor show
By Ray Lewis
HENSALL - Collectors flocked
to the Hensall Community Centre
Sunday afternoon as the Hensall
Kinsmen hosted their 24th annual
Toy Tractor Show in conjunction
with Week of the Child activities in
the village.
"We had a pretty good turnout,"
said organizer Marvin Taylor.
"We'll be back again next year."
Fourteen exhibitors set up dis-
plays featuring both toy and minia-
ture tractors as well as some other
unique collectibles.
Jeff and Jamie Hayter were on
hand with their collection of nearly
150 toy tractors, which they have
been collecting for about eight
years.
"I guess I started collecting as a
kid," said Jeff. "I got hooked and
have been at it ever since."
One of the best displays was pre-
sented by Wayne Rumford of Sea -
forth, who is in only his second
year of collecting. Along with
many old style tractors and farm
implements, his collection is jazzed
up with a host of model railroad
trinkets, featuring three running
tracks of engines and cars in nearly
every scale.
Having finally run out of room to
house his collection, Rumford now
stores his collection in not one, but
two trailers. It takes the 18 -year-
old collector nearly two hours just
to set up his equipment, even
though he has it down to a science.
"It's a lot of work, but my dad
and I have a pretty good system
now," said Rumford. "I started col-

lecting the tractors about two years
ago but my dad had already been
collecting train sets for years."
The exhibition also featured a
few younger collectors as well.
Marty DeBruyn of Exeter and Der-
rick Leenders of Lucan were eager
to present their combined collection
of nearly 300 miniature tractors.
For them it is not only a hobby, but
somewhat of an investment. The
miniature tractors and implements
can usually be purchased for be-
tween $5-$10, and gradually appre-
ciate with age.
DeBruyn's collection is currently
valued at about $800, and his pride
1
and joy is a Massey -Ferguson 4880
four wheel drive.
"It's worth about $25," said De-
Bruyn.
Amidst various athletic and scho-
lastic awards, DeBruyn has had a
bit of trouble just finding enough
shelf space to house his collection.
"After I got too many my dad had
to build me some more shelves,"
laughed DeBruyn. "It's a good
thing I have a big room."
For those interested in grabbing a
glimpse of some of these collec-
tions, another show will be held at
the South Huron Recreation Centre
in Exeter on November 17.
