in a long 10 inning game on Sunday. There were 24 teams in eight

Junior 'D' league TH
wants to change
its "goon" image
CAMBRIDGE - People have im-
ages, but do hockey leagues?
Apparently the OHA Junior 'D',
league does and all the teams seem
to want to change it.
Representatives from 17 of the
18 teams, including the Exeter
Hawks and the Lucan Irish, recent -
!y met here to hash over ideas to-
wards improving the league's im-
age. Wellesley did not attend.
"A lot of them think it should be
changed. In years past, Junior 'D'
was probably known as a goon
league and it's pretty hard to shake
it," said Lucan manager Ken Free-
man.
The label goon league, meaning
it's just a group of teams that like
to brawl, could have steered Park-
hill away from entering the league.
"Parkhill knows nothing about
Junior 'D' hockey and stated they
didn't want to play because it was
goon hockey," said Freeman.
He added they will be observing
the league this winter and if con-
vinced it's not a goon league, could
be joining in 1992-93.
Ideas which were presented in an
attempt to change the image was
=each team would display other
teams in their division on their let-
ter head. Also giving hats to each
new player which joins the team.
Freeman said OHA president
Brent Ladds even suggested the 'D'
could stand for development. 'How-
ever, the league is not all younger
players, but a mixture of those un-
der and over 17 years -old.
"Most of the teams that win have
an even mix of each. If they want a
development league you have to
have younger players," said Free-
man.
Last season, the league switched
from a three to a two division with
nine teams in each. It was suggest-
ed having a home -and -home format
with the other division.
"A lot of the teams thought it
would cost too much for travel so
we're going to stay the same."
Freeman added the league is
looking at drafting up their own
constitution and also will investi-
gate the possibility of removing the
red lint.
