Grounded - Centennials' Chuck Walker, right; tries to take the ball away.
Ontario Cup action
Centennials edged 5-4
EXETER - The Canada Day fes-
tivities lacked one element for the
Exeter Centennials Monday, a vic-
tory.
Struggling all year in their own
senior soccer league, the Centenni-
als faced Portugese United from
Dorchester in Ontario Cup play,
coming up short 5-4 in overtime.
The Ontario Cup is an elimina-
tion format.
"Everyone enters it and if you
win you keep going. It's do or die,"
said Exeter player/coach Dick
Lord.
Exeter took a 1-0 lead when
Charlie Wise scored on a corner
kick from George McEwen but
United tied it up before the half. In
the second half, the Centennials
once again took the lead this time
when Wise crossed the ball to
Gary Wilson.
But for the second time, United
came back, tieing the game and
eventually sending it into overtime.
"We had our chances, we should
have put them away," said Lord.
"You can't blow a lead twice."
After the regular 90 minutes, two
15 minute perioda were played in
which neither team could score. In
the shootout Chuck Walker and Ka-
hampane Chansamone scored.
There was some heated tempers
late in the game involving Exeter's
Ray Lewis. A brief altercation be-
tween him and the centre forward
from United was overlooked by the
referee.
"I was disappointed with the ref,
but you'll get that," said Lord.
Despite the loss, he said Centen-
nials goalie Craig Winbow played
well.
Exeter will have a bit of a break
from Western Ontario Soccer
League play until they meet St.
Columban on Sunday, July 14 at 2
p.m. in Exeter.
Express score lots of runs
Continued from page 13
the third but did it again in the
fourth that helped set up his second
run of the game as Hoiden singled
him home.
With a shortage of pitchers, the
Express put Baynham on the
mound who struggled and was hit
hard by Lakeside. They got six runs
in the fifth and added four more in
the sixth.
Express 25, Kincardine 10
A pair of home runs by Dave
Shaw certainly helped in this one as
he went three -for -five with blasts in
the sixth and seventh innings.
After being retired in order in the
first inning, the Express pounded
out 24 hits. But what seemed to
hurt Kincardine even more were
the 13 walks, five of those came in
the fifth inning when the Express
plated five runs.
Having good outings to the plate
besides Shaw were outfielder Doug
Schade who had three singles,
Dickey clubbed a pair of doubles,
catcher Darcy Martin connected
with three base hits, Heeney had a
single and a double, Baynham hit
three singles, shortstop Scot Rus-
sell was hot with two doubles and a
triple and Don McDonald had two
doubles and a single.
Express 12, Listowel 1
A couple of weeks ago, the Ex-
press lost a 14-12 decision to Lis-
towel but last Tuesday turned the
tables and came up with a big 12-1
win.
Meurer went the distance on the
mound for Exeter and the only run
he gave up was in the fifth inning
when he gave up a walk and two
base hits. He gave up just six hits in
the seven innings he pitched.
Exeter got half of their runs in the
fourth on six hits and a walk.

Hockey night in Kirkton
By Ray Lewis
KIRKTON - Underwater hockey
will finally make its debut in the
area, as the Kirkton pool hosts an
instructional night Wednesday,
July 10, at 8 p.m.
"It looks like it's going to catch
on," said Jim Fleming, a gold med-
alist with Ontario's men's team.
Fleming, along with Doug Sitter,
a member of Ontario's mixed team,
will host the event which they
hope will continue on a weekly ba-
sis. Plans are already underway
for more pool time, due to the
number of inquiries the duo have
entertained.
There are no restrictions as far as
age is concerned, as the pair have
received calls from people aged 8-
60. The game is non -contact, so
many women have also expressed
interest.
"It's a chance to see a sport in its
purest form, because it's only 25
years old," said Fleming. "Really,
it's still on the ground floor."
The game is played much the
same as ice hockey, the exception
being that it is played underwater.
Players use a small wooden stick to
push a three pound brass puck
along the pool's bottom, and into a
trough at pool's end.
Anyone who would like to try un-
derwater hockey, will need a mask,
snorkel and fins, while Sitter and
Fleming will provide the rest of the
gear.

LOOK OUT,
YOU BRAZILIANS!
Now that -General Schwart-
zhisface has kindly given us
back our army, more or less
intact, we should send it to
Brazil and make them stop
cutting down trees. They
claim they need more land for
farming. Nonsense! Brazil's
that great big orange place.
They got lots of land.
On the other hand, instead of
wasting more SMART weap-
ons to kill more swarthy peo-
ple, maybe we should set an
example. Let's start by re-
foresting some of the land our
forefathers stopped, say, for
instance, that part of Southern
Ontario west of the Niagara
escarpment. All it's good for
is growing corn, and any
farmer will tell you there's no
money in corn.
Not a whole lot in killinr;
swarthy people, either.
