B-25 - As the pilot of this 13-25J bomber remarked, everybody who passes the plane has to inspect the
bomb bay. The aircraft is owned by the Canadian Warplane Heritage of Hamilton.
Annual rendezvous brings
old warbirds to Huron Park
HURON PARK - There is some-
thing special about old fighter air-
craft. And for those who served
with those planes during the wars,
the chance to get another glimpse at
their combination of horsepower
and acrobatic grace is irresistible.
As about two dozen fully restored
warplanes arrived at Huron Park's
airport Friday afternoon, the former
RCAF Centralia base, for their an-
nual rendezvous before the Hamil-
ton Air Show, along came local air-
craft enthusiasts and former airmen
eager for another look at the craft
that fought in Europe and the Pacif-
ic.
The Recreational Aircraft Associ-
ation of Canada, chapter 6987, has
hosted the rendezvous for the past
three years, and it has become a
place for the pilots of the warbirds
to get together for an informal chat
and lunch before heading on to the
more hectic air show.
For those who actually served 'at
ter the war, there were Harvard sin -
RCAF Centralia either during or af-
gle-engine and Expeditor twin -
engine trainees on display Friday -
planes which used to be a common
sight in the local skies.
Along for the ride were T -28s, P-
25 bomber, an Anson trainer, and
even a Tiger Moth of World War I
vintage. The Lancaster bomber,
Spitfire and Hurricane which stole
the show last year were missed this
time round.
As organizer Wayne Steeper ex-
plained, the annual rendezvous is
attracting more interest each year.
World War II pilots are especially
drawn to the event because they get
a chance to chat with the younger
men who are flying the restored air-
craft today.
"Ever since we began to run this
there's guys coming out of the
woodwork who we never even
knew flew in the war," said Steep-
er.
War time comrades even bums
into each other at the event, even
though they haven't met in decades,
making for surprise reunions.
"It's a chance to renew old friend-
ships," said Steeper.

These P -51s were lined up on the
runway ready for take -off in
