Granton family 'off to the races'
By RayLewis
GRANTON - hen you want
something
done right,
you've got
to go to
the t.
And when it
comes to training
pacers, people
come to Don Beatson.
Together with wife Deanna, son
Ken, and daughters Sylvia and
Melanie, raising winners has be-
come a way of life in Granton.
Don has lived in the area all his
life, while Deanna is originally
from Hyde Park. Both were raised
on mixed farms, but neither had
horses.
"1 was always interested in it,"
said Don. "And the operation just
grew from that,"
Don originally started dabbling
as a hobby in 1970. In 1977 he
started full-time, and things have
since changed. In addition to his
own stock, he trains horses for
owners who have invested a lot of
money. They wain results and
they depend on him.
Most of the horses are owned
by local investors, but he does get
outside interest from London and
Woodstock. Currently, his stable
is full tvith seven horses, and there
is a waiting list.
"That's plenty for us," agrees
Deanna. 'It's certainly a full-time
job."
To most of the owners that have
horses trained by Beatson, racing
is a hobby. They want the horse to
win enough to pay his way, and
anything above that is a bonus.
Most have other trades and just en -
•
joy being at the track; with a horse
of their own.
Son Ken has been raised with the
knowledge of horses all his life,
and he too possesses a trainers li-
cense. After maintaining a groom-
er's license for three years and pass-
ing a wriuen test. He is enrolled in
Animal Sciences at the University
of Guelph, but returns home on
weekends and throughout the sum-
mer to help out.
According to Don, all horses
have problems.
"It's not just that thcy run fast or
they can't," said Don. "Most of
them can run fast, but you have to
go through all of these problems
once or twice before you can see
them coming. Then you work on
the correction."
All the horses are good at one
time or another. Either they start
good and go lame, or they aren't so
good when they start but come
sound with. They all have their
good periods, and you just have to
try and keep them there.
For the owners, they like to have
the young horses. It gets expensive
if the horse doesn't earn his keep. If
the horse goes lame early, the own-
er doesn't have as much invested,
The Beatson family usually takes
on three or four -year-olds.
Currently, the Beatson horses
race at Flamboro, as well as Wood-
stock, Sarnia, Clinton and Clearwa-
ter, but when Western Fair Race-
way is open, they race almost
exclusively there. Usually, a
couple of times each year, they

have a really $ood horse to run the
Toronto circuit. But as Don says,
"it's tough to win there."
They try to race each horse once
a week by racing two a night. It's a
lot of work and it takes four nights
a week. A typical day for the Beat -
son family runs from seven until
noon with a break until four. They
would load, travel, race and return
home anytime after 1 a.m.
"It's all day everyday," laughs
Deanna. "And when you go on a
holiday, you don't go far."
Don's track record is as good as
his horses and he has won the non-
driver trainer award 3 times. A
committee takes his number of rac-
es and calculates his winning per-
centage. On average, Beatson's
horses run two hundred races a year
with about 55 winners.
"It's really streaky," said Don.
"But you usually get one horse up
while another is down."
The Beatson's have definitely
raised some quality animals. Will -
van Dasher lasted 10 years and won
60 races in his lifetime. Miss Seed
Lynn won seven in a row at Wind-
sor in the good classes. Innisfree
Jim was horse -of -the -year in Lon-
don, and Dots Joy held the track
record at Western Fair.
Currently, the Beatsons have a
new stable favourite; Mister D's
Con Artist. Coming off a year wait
with a broken foot, the horse al-
ready has three wins, and is trained
mostly by Ken.
Like his father before him, it
must be in the blood.
Buckle up - Tom Beatson (left), and son Ken prepare one of their most successful pacers, lnnisfree
Jim, for a session on the track.

It may not be so had. If man-
ufacturers pity the game
instead of absorbing the pre-
vious 1 3 1/2% manufactur-
ing tax - which went out
when the GST came in - the
added tax burden shouldn't
be all that much.
You see, the 13 1/2% tended
to get carried and marked up
from factory to distributor to
wholesaler to retailer to con-
sumer, and became pretty
much a 13 1/2% retail sales
tax. The GST, if nothing
else, is an honest, visible tax.
But don't listen to me; for
years -I thought Chicken
Little was right.
I wasn't sure about the gov-
ernment. •
