South Huron selects students of the year
EXETER - Following tradition, South Huron District
High School held their annual end -of -the year formal Fri-
day night. Part of this ritual included the unveiling of the
male and female students of the year, an honour be-
stowed to two people who have shown a strong involve-
ment in school and community activities, and have held
exceptional academic standings.
Kim Lingard and Dave Thiel were chosen by their
classmates as this year's winners The decision was diffi-
cult, however, since there were eight other well-qualified
contestants. To inform the other schoolmates of their
credentials, each of the participants were asked to write a
description of high school years.
Kim Lingard
Throughout her years at South
Huron, Kim Lingard has been ac-
tively involved in many aspects of
student life. Lingard has remained
on the honour roll every year, and
was presented with an Excellence
in Education award this April.
She has enjoyed her past in-
volvement in the athletic council,
peer tutoring program and a three
month student exchange to France,
as well as her present involvement
in student council as First Vice
President and Head Prefect.
Lingard has also been a member
of South Huron's field hockey and
volleyball teams for each of her
five years, and has had the opportu-
nity to be a team captain for each,
this year.
Lingard is hoping to continue her
education next year at McGill Uni-
versity.
Geoffrey Poole
Poole has been on the honour
roll for the five years he has auend-
ed South Huron. He has been on
the South Huron "Reach for the
Top" team for the past three years,
and has been team captain for the
past two.
Poole has an affinity for histol y,
punk rock music, Jack Kcrouac
novels, and cowboy boots.
He hopes to attend the Universi-
ty of Toronto in the fall.

mural sports, special event days,
and the annual fashion show.
VanDongen hopes to attend the
University of Western Ontario next

David Thiel
This past year, Thiel has enjoyed
playing on the school hockey team
and the Reach for the Top team.
Academically, Thiel has been the
top student in his grade for the past
four years.
Theil was also honoured last
summer to represent his school and
Canada at the International Chemis-
try Olympiad where he won a
bronze medal.
Theil is the son of Doug and Lois
Thiel of Zurich.
Kim VanDongen
VanDongen has played on the
volleyball team for five years, and
was also a member of the track
and cross country team in which
she was an individual competitor
for each.
VanDongen has been a prefect,
an athletic council representative
since grade 10, and an executive
Jake Morrice
Morrice has consistently been on
the honour roll throughout high
school. He has been involved as a
Student Council representative and
a peer tutor. He has also competed
in several sports teams and was
co -captain of the volleyball team
this year.
Next year he plans to study engi-
neering in university.
Ryan Good
Good has been a member of the
school soccer team for three years.
He has been a member of the stu-
dent council, as well as the athletic
council. He was chosen this year
for the position of Athletic Council
Liaison Chairperson.
He has enjoyed being convener
for soccer linesmen, a prefect and
peer tutor for the past two years.
Good has maintained honour roll
standings throughout high school.
This year he was presented with an
Excellence in Education Award/
He has been involved in two
school shows: Showcase '89 and
this year's Fame.
Good is currently co -manager of
the Grand Bend Watersports along
with cooking part-time at the
Thirsty Fox.
Good plans to attend the Univer-
sity of Waterloo for Honours Envi-
ronment and Resource Studies.
Leigh Rose
Rose has enjoyed her five years
at South Huron being involved with
various aspects of school life while
maintaining honour roll standings.
She has participated on the bas-
ketball and volleyball teams for
five years and was co -captain for
this year's basketball team. As an
extension of her interest in basket-
ball, Rose has been a coach for the
grade school basketball clinic.
She has also been actively in-
volved with the prefecting and in-
tramurals.
Rose's future plans include uni-
versity as she is interested in busi-
ness administration.
Pat Ducharme
Ducharme has been a busy stu-
dent during his five years at
SHDHS.
Although he has been involved in
many intramural activities through-
out those years, his favourite sport'
has always been basketball. Du-
charme has been a member of the
school basketball team for five
years, and was awarded the honour
of this year's Most Valuable Player. •
He has also refereed high school
games and public school tourna-
ments, and this year has helped
coached the midget girls basketball
team.

Kareth Wernham
Ducharme began taking music in
grade ten, and has been a member
of the Concert Band and Jazz Band
since then. He has been in the
choir for two years, and was presi-
dent of the music executive. this
past year. Along with playing the
trumpet, the guitar, and singing,
Ducharme is now learning to play
the saxophone. He is a member of
the school band, "The Deadbeats."
Ducharme has been on the hon-
our roll every year throughout high
school. He has been a peer tutor
for three years and was recently
awarded an Excellence in Educa-
tion Award.
Kareth Wernham
Wernham has attended South
Huron for two years, and during
that time has maintained an hon-
ours academic standing.
She has participated in intramu-
rals and has helped with other vari-
ous school activities. Wemham
has been a member of the debating
club and has represented the school
in a mock trial competition in Mil-
ton.
She is currently a prefect and a
member of the student council
committee and the student athletic
council. Last year, Wemham re-
ceived the OAC geography award.
Wernham hopes to attend Sir
Wilfrid Laurier University in the
fall.

Shari Morley
Morley has been on the honour
roll each of her five years at South
Huron, and was a recipient of the
Excellence of Education Award.
Morley was on the yearbook staff
for four years, and was last year's
editor.
This year she has put a great deal
of work into planning school
events through her involvement on
the student council. Morley is the
student council's secretary.
Next year Morley plans to auend
the University of Toronto to study
pharmacy.
