player got past a defenceman. The visiting Lancers won the opening game of the west division semi-final

series opener 4-2.
While Hawkins led the offence
with a goal and an assist, Dark
made 35 saves.
Dark didn't see much action in
the previous series against Dunn-
ville as Rick Pikul was outstanding.
But Wednesday, Dark answered the
call and played well.
Earlier during a regular season
game he allowed just two goals
against the tough Aylmer offence.
"I think I've played some of my
best games against Aylmer," said
Dark. "They're a good team to play
ainst because they've got some
cod shooters."

LUCAN - The Lucan Irish
seemed to be victims of their own
success Monday night as they
dropped their best -of -seven West-
ern Ontario Junior 'D' west divi-
sion semi-final series opener 4-2
to the Lambeth Lancers.
Having handily disposed of Mt.
Bridges in four straight, the Irish
came out flat after a weeklong
break between series. Meanwhile
the Lancers eliminated the
Belmont Pests.
"We came out really flat," said
coach Ken Needham. "We really
felt that week between games.
The Lancers drew first blood at
the six minute mark of the first pe-
riod as Craig Pinnegar scored
from Scott MacDonald and John
Blokker. Lambeth took a 2-0 lead
into the dressing room as Greg
Holmes scored on a pass from
Warren Smith and Scott Wiacek.
The visitors added another goal
midway through the second when
Scott Forster beat goalie Bob Szabo
between the pads at 8:50, and went
up 4-0 when Holmes walked in on
Szabo only seconds later.
The Irish finally got on the score-
board a minute later when Ed Van-
Keorkle took a pass from Tim
Hayter and made a nice move to
beat Lambeth goaltender Brent
Lewis.
The goal seemed to spark new
life into the home squad as they
pressed for another goal at 12:35 of
the second. Jermey Jemec stole the
puck and passed to Jack Legg who
fed Greg Deprest to get Lucan back
into it.
The Irish pressed for the remain-
der of the period but, despite some
nifty moves by speedy Andy Ross,
had trouble finishing off.
Costly penalties
Lucan began the third on the
powerplay and came out strong but
Lewis proved he was steady in the
net for Lambeth. Penalties at key
moments cost the Irish momentum
as each time they seemed about to
mount a comeback, they found
More than once in Wednesday's
game did Dark come up with a lit-
tle luck. He misjudged a few shots
that were deflected close range and
he managed to get a piece of them.
"One of the keys to playing goal
is when you're playing good the
luck is usually with you," he said.
The Hornets found themselves in
the penalty box a lot in the opening
minutes of the game but the Mo-
hawks couldn't capitalize. Finally,
with about six minutes left, Scherer
rode the puck into the corner and
then came out.in front and made it
1-0 with the powerplay goal.
Another man advantage situation
saw the hosts go up 2-0 early in the
second as Les Arts fed Hawkins in
front of the net who backhanded it
past Lauziere.
Exeter had three good chances to
put the game out of reach as Chet
Couture, Jeff Shipley, Andre Pre-
vost and Tim Shields all missed
scoring shorthanded goals.
Late in the second, Coutts came
down and unloaded one past Dark.
Just 13 seconds into the third peri-
od, Aylmer tied it up when
McMenemy caught the Mohawks
off Beard.
The third period belonged to Ex-
eter as a shot from Paul Barton was
stopped by Lauziere but fell into
the net over his shoulder. Hawkins
raced down the left side let one go
and Shipley was there to knock in
the rebound.

themselves skating to the box. The
home team was called for eight of
the twelve minor infractions.
"Even though we came out flat,"
said Freeman, we did have our
chances?
Lucan netminder Szabo held
Lambeth at bay for the third period
while at the other end, his team-
mates swarmed the opposing goal
but couldn't get the bounces. Ross
snuck out in front with the puck but
misfired and Hayter had a puck
bounce off his stick in the crease.
Look for the Irish to have their
skating legs back for the second
game in the series tonight in Lamb-
eth.
