Beat Mt. Brydges Bulldogs 4-2, 65,
By Fred Groves
. MT. BRYDGES - Trailing 3-0
in the second period, the Lucan
Irish rebounded to beat the host
Mt. Brydges Bulldogs 6-5 in over-
time in game two of the best -of -
seven Western Ontario Junior 'D'
Hockey League west division
opening playoff series.
Just 2:38 into the ten-minute
overtime period, rookie Jeremy Je-
mec let go with a quick shot past
Kyle Blythe and the Irish hung on
to win their second straight
playoff contest over the Bulldogs.
Wednesday night, the Irish won
the opener 4-2.
In Mt. Brydges, Jemec's line -
mates Greg DePrest and Tim
Hayter assisted on the powerplay
goal. Andy Ross led the Irish of-
fence with two goals and an assist,
while Dan Brand had a goal and
two assists. Hayter and captain
Brian Schuyler also connected.
For the Bulldogs, Greg Weston,
Paul Marcus, Todd Baker, Deice
Gibson and Dwayne DesRosers
scored.
Take opener: Wednesday night
in Lucan, the Irish had their trou-
bles in the opening playoff game.
The two sides skated to a scoreless
fust period and it was 3-2 after 40

ALVINSTON - Three local
junior hockey players were hon-
ored at the annual Western On-
tario Junior 'D' Hockey League
banquet in Alvinston Saturday
night.
Exeter Hawks forward Derek
Shackleton and defenceman
John Bell were named to the
west division first all-star team
while Lucan Irish forward Greg
DePrest was also selected.
Rounding out the top six
players were Port Stanley Lak-
ers centre Mark Redden who
was also named the division

minutes a play.
"We didn't come out skating very
well. We could have had a couple
but no luck," said Lucan coach Ken
Needham.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring
when Iggy Sakimjek and Marcus
came down on a two -on -one and
Sakimjek scored a shorthanded
goal.
"We weren't picking up the man
on the way back," admitted Jemec.
It seemed as though the Bulldogs
were shadowing him all night and
he was banged around a lot.
"I got hit around a little bit. I nev-
er had any pfnblem with it," he
said.
Lucan tied it up when Darren
Neil let go with a quick wrist shot
that beat Blythe. But an ice level
shot by Lee Baker and the visitors
were back on top.
Still in the second period, Lucan
again evened the count this time it
was DePrest finding the mark. Je-
mec and Hayter did the leg work
and then Hayter fired a quick pass
from the comer.
With 53 seconds left in the first
period, defenceman Jamie Pearce
gave the Irish the lead for the first
time when he let one go from the
blueline.
That proved to be the winning
goal but Brad Bowers added one
more in the third period. Mt.
Brydges' defenceman Don South -
wall fell down while Jason Wilson
was racing down the right side and
he fed it to Bowers who had come
in from the blue line.
The insurance goal was an impor-
tant one as the Bulldogs nearly tied
it up earlier in the period. Roy Ir -
land was at point blank range in the
slot and Lucan goalie Bob Szabo
came up with a big save.
Lucan failed to score in the third
when they had a two man advan-
tage. Jemec drew back-to-back pen-
alties when he was tripped by Wes-
ton and 20 seconds later Southwall
went to the box for slashing Jemec.
"He really skated well and he was
strong along the boards," said—
Needham of Jemec's efforts
Wednesday night.
Although the Irish finished first
in the standings, they had their
hands full with the eighth place
Bulldogs in the first game.
"If we play basic hard work, we
should be able to beat these guys,"
said Needham.
The series continues tonight in
Lucan at 8:15 p.m.
