Wednesday night in their own arena, they escaped with an 8-6 win over the Seaforth Centen- naires. Seaforth is battling with Mt. Brydges for the eighth and last playoff spot in the Western Onta- rio Junior 'D' hockey league's west division. Sunday the Irish travelled to Lambeth where they beat the Lancers 5-4 and upped their record to 22-5-3. Lucan, Exeter Hawks and the Port Stanley Lakers are all logged - jammed at the top of the stand- ings. There's a good chance Lucan and Seaforth could be paired up in the first round of post -season play. "We have to start buckling down and prepare for the playoffs men- tally," said veteran defenceman Todd Hayter. The Irish have been the league finalists the past two years and don't want to settle for second best again. •Lucan has played Seaforth five times, the best the Cents could manage was a 2-2 draw back on November 16. But coach Ken Needham says you can't take them too lightly. "You have to get prepared for teams like this. Every time you beat them, they remember it." In the first two periods here Wednesday, the Irish let the visitors walk in on goalie Mark Dunn. Al- though Dunn is usually stuck at the end of the bench while Bob Szabo and Dan Jenken are between the pipes, he didn't look confident. "He made some mental mistakes. He just didn't play as well as he's capable," said Needham. "He was just probably a little excited." Dunn was shaken up late in the second period after the Cents scored their sixth goal. He was re- placed by Szabo, who has the best goals against average in the league. In the 27 minutes he played, Szabo didn't allow a goal. Hayter, playing in front of Dunn, didn't fault the netminder for the goals. "He doesn't get that many chanc- es to get in the game. He did all right," said Hayter. Lucan built a 3-2 fustod lead on goals by Jack Legg Jon McEachern and Greg DcPres,t. An- swering for Seaforth was Dave Williams with a pair. The Irish continued to fill the ne as DePrest, Jeremy Jemec, Ed Van- Kerkoele and Jason Wilson with two scored. Steve Schroeder, Kory Dietz, Jason Dietz and Shane Coop- er replied for the visitors. There was nq scoring in the third period. Needham said he wasn't overly pleased with his team's effort but admitted it was two more points. "Nobody was doing anything right. They were just out for a skate, fortunately you can get away with it with them." The game was by far a friendly one as Lucas's Tim Hayter, Jamie Pearce and Jeremy )emec were all ejected for fighting. Clore gaaii: In-Lasolnda ge Sun- day Lucan opened a 2 first peri- od lead on goals by Schuyler and Steve Matthews. Just 14 seconds into the second frame, Lambeth got back into it on Scott Wiacer s first of two. Dean Thomas tied the score but Lucan's McEachern made it 3-2. But Lambeth headed into the sec- ond intermission up by one as War- ren Smith and Wiacer connected. The third period belonged to the Irish as DePreset scored and with 7:05 left, McEachern notched the winner.
