The Scripture Luke II, verses 1 to 20 was read by Dianne Rice. A number of Christmas carols were sung followed by special music, a duct by Susan McKay and Carey Eddy entitled "Christmas is a' feel- ing: with Lynn Tremain on the flute and Ardella Gabel at the organ. Karen McKay sang a solo "Wait for you" with tape recorded music. The Lord's Supper was celebrated at the close of the service. A specialized sounds system will be demonstrated at Grand Bend United Church on January 10 at 7 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to at- tend. Roxanne Martin was named Queen at the 125th annual Zurich Fall Fair. Dave Revington of Lucan was named the new coach of the Exeter senior hockey Mohawks. August August 2 Two London men were arrested by the Exeter police department and charged with possession of stolen money orders. PUC manager Hugh Davis re- ported arrears on the latest hydro billings were the highest ever. Sandcastle Days in Grand Bend were cancelled for 1989. The Wheels to Nature program for wheelchair participation at the Rock Glen Conservation area was , officially launched. August 9 Exeter council approved pur- chase of five acres of land from Dalton Finkbeiner for expansion of the Exeter cemetery. The prop- erty is located directly across Highway 83 from the present ce- metery. Hensall Co -Op acquired T.B. Allen Ltd. and Allboro Elevators in Londcsboro to make the local business the largest independently owned farmers' Co -Operative in Ontario. In an Ontario Cabinet shuffle, Huron MPP Jack Riddell lost his position as Minister of Agricul- ture. Construction of a new fire hall in Exeter is expected to start in September. It will be located on property purchased from Nabisco Brands. Amy Rclouw was named Queen of the Dashwood Friedsburg Days for 1989. Jim Freeman of Lucan received •the Gold Stick award from the On- tario Hockey Association. It's the highest award given by the OHA. August 16 Robert Conium of Huron Park died nine days after falling off a pickup truck in Logan township. Hensall council agreed to start annexation procedures with the township of Tuckersmith for a 35 acre parcel of land owned by Wil- liam Rowcliffe to be used for sub- division development. SHDHS teacher Pat Rowe won silver and bronze medals in bad= minion at the World Master's Games in Denmark and had a har- rowing experience on the way home when the plane was forced back to Iceland after being dam- aged on takeoff. The park on the west side of highway 4 adjacent to MacNaugh- ton Park- in Exeter has been named Elliott Park. August 23 Grand Bend council failed to fill the vacancy created by the recent death of deputy reeve George Kadlccik. Former Exeter area resident Maurice Love was named Citizen of the Year by the Calgary. Lions Club. A petition from a few residents of Grand Bend asking the Minister of Municipal Affairs to conduct an in- quiry into the actions of reeve Bob Sharen and other members of coun- cil was submitted to the province. Patty O'Toole was named Exeter Fall Fair Queen for 1989. A quarter of a million dollar ren- ovation project at South Huron Dis- trict High School has been ap- proved by the Huron Board of Education. Blansaard township enjoyed a very successful 150th anniversary celebration. Tires were slashed on 24 vehicles at Huron Park. September September 6 The Bluewater Recycling Associ- ation unveiled their new processing plant at the Grand Bend Industrial Park on the former RCAF station property. - Exeter councillor Morley Hall vented his frustration over council's inaction on a proposed blue box program. The Exeter PUC will.be hiring a. person to train as a lineman. Newly appointed clerk of the vil- lage of Grand Bend Wayne Tingle secs a tough six months ahead. The annual Huron County plow- ing match at the Tuckersmith town- ship farm of Bob and Marlene Bell was a success despite rainy weath- er. Shawn McFalls, 15 years of age participated in the Western Canada Lawn Bowling Classic. September 13 Exeter council approved in prin- cipal plans for a proposed Ausable Corridor from MacNaughton Park in Exeter to Morrison Dam. Higher than expected enrollment has caused temporary class prob- lems at Stephen Central School. Rosa Maria Duenas of the Cana- dian Embassy in Mexico City visit- ed with Gibby and Zella Gibson. The Grand Bend beach patrol completed 'its eighth straight sea- son without a fatality. The 120th annual Kirkton Fall Fair was again successful. September 20 Arca OPP detachments warn businesses that quick -change art- ists.are at work in the area. Approval was given for the in- stallation of metal siding at the South Huron Rec Cenue. Exhibits at the 1989 Exeter Fall Fair will be on display one day longer this year. The OPP extension office in Zu- rich opened to provide higher visi- bility of policing services in the village and the township of Hay. The South Huron Safe Homes for Youth has expanded its board of directors in its second year of operation. Several sites arc under considera- tion in parts of northern Huron county for a new 81 bed home for the aged. Organist Robert Cameron was _honored on his retirement after serving Exeter United Church for 23 years. September 27 The Huron Board of Education is taking a serious look at year-round classes. August was the second best month in 1989 for building permits in Exeter. The 1989 Exeter Fall Fair with a theme of "Focus on Horses" was a huge success. Attendance was up from a year ago. Huron MPP Jack Riddell has been named parliamentary assist- ant to the Minister of Natural Re- sources. October October 4 Kathy Merner of Zurich turned professional to join the 50th anni- versary tour in the United States of the Ice Capades skating show. She will also be skating in Canada dur- ing her one year contract. More than 100igs were lost in a barn fire on the farm of Tony Mi- chiclsen, south of Shipka. Many Exeter residents took their dogs for a walk to raise $3,500 for Canine Vision of Canada. Exeter councillor Morley Hall threatened to resign as head of the town's recycling program after council again delayed a decision on the blue box program. Rev. Ed Laksmanis was cove- nanted as the new minister at Cre- diton United Church. Rev. Colin Stover settled in as the new minister at Grand Bend United Church. The official opening of the $4 million addition and renovations program at the Huron County Mu - scum in Goderich was held. The Exeter Express won the Western Ontario Senior D baseball championship. October 11 Lucan councillors questioned the $20,000 cost for a sewage study as requested by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. Stephen township approved stop signs at all intersections with Hu- ron street in the municipality. The Dashwood Industries plant near Centralia was evacuated on two occasions following bomb. threats. -'Searches uncovered noth- ing. Ailsa Craig reeve Don Shipway won the great pumpkin challenge over Port Elgin mayor Fred Wuerth. The Craig pumpkin weighed 235 pounds while the one from Port Elgin tipped the scales at 222 pounds. Stephen township farmer Harvey Hodgins lost part of his leg in a freak farm accident. The Crediton Optimist Club re- ceived its charter. Mark Lay is the first president. James and Alma Prance of Grand Bend celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. October 18 Numerous awards were present- ed at the annual Commencement exercises at SHDHS. Sharing the Moncur Scholarship were Brenda Balsdon, Said Osman and David Josephson. Exeter council agreed to join other area municipalities in 1990 in a blue box recycling program. London -Middlesex MP Terry Clifford denied any wrongdoing in hiring practices for his daughter Amy and Sandra Hicks, daughter of another MP. Developer Gib Dow offered to tum over river flats property to the town` instead of paying the usual developer's fee in proposing a new subdivision development. Richard and Elizabeth Aisenpreis of RR3 Kippen were the victims of a murder -suicide incident on their arca farm. Randy Wilson of Huron Park was sentenced to 90 days in jail afte,. he was convicted of charges laid after a man fell off the back of a truck driven by Wilson.. Grand Bend council turned down a Chamber of Commerce proposal to start a Business' Improvement area in the village. October 25 Ian Atkin of Exeter was glad to he home after being in San Francis- co during the devastating earth- quake. A survey of police village homes by the- Dashwood Firemen's Asso- ciation revealed an alarming num- ber of residents were not properly protected by smoke detectors. The strike of Ontario's communi- ty college teachers kept a number of students from Exeter at home. Lois and Iry Armstrong of Exeter received a plaque for thcir many years of service at the annual ban- quet of the Huron Chapter of the Ontario Heart and Stroke Founda- tion. November November 1 Former Ontario Agriculture Min- ister Jack Riddell reveals his disap- pointment over the recent cabinet shuffle in which he was replaced. Jim and Shirley Wilkinson of Ex- eter and Dick and Roberta Kloss of Brucefield were honored as foster parents at the annual Huron Family and Children's Services banquet in Blyth. The neighborly spirit was out in full force as more than 20 Stephen township farmers "furrowed" their way around the farms of Harvey Hodgins who lost part of his right leg in a recent farm accident. More than 250 donations were made at the recent Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic at SHDHS sponsored by, the Ausable River Nomads. Developer Len Veri donated land to build a home which will be used as a prize in a draw to gain funds to construct a new Precious Blood Ro- man Catholic Church in Exeter. November 8 The South Huron District High. School field hockey team won the all -Ontario championship and be- came the first team from SHDHS to take an OFSAA title. The engineering firm of B.M. Ross has offered $7,000 to the town of Exeter in compensation for an error made in a construction ten- der. . Stanley township farmers and business firms joined together to organize a plowing bee for the An- senpreis children who were or- phaned as the result of a recent murder -suicide incident. Co-operative housing construc- tion to be undertaken in 1990 was approved by Exeter council on property adjoining the new Exeter fire hall. Grand Bend officially turned down a Chamber of Commerce proposal to start a Business Im- provement area in the village. November 15 Sally Lou Raymond and Rick Graham were named Citizens of the Year at the town of Exeter an- nual appreciation night. Christine Louise Hemming of Guelph was charged with aggravat- ed assault in a stabbing incident at Northwood Village trailer park. The site for a new water tower at Queen and William streets was ap- proved by Lucan village council. The South Huron Panthers won the Huron -Perth senior boys foot- ball championship for the fourth' consecutive year. An OPP cruiser was damaged during a victory party for the South Huron football team following their championship win over Gode- rich. A new ambulance station is planned for the village of Zurich. Barb Rau - resigned after three years as water project officer in the township of Hay. Exeter's Safe Homes for Youth program received the Solicitor Gen- eral's award for Crime Prevention. Sisters Kaethe Freiter and Annie Zielman were excited as they left for West Germany to visit a brother they hadn't seen in 45 years. A Careers Fair at Centralia Col- lege attracted a large crowd. November 22 Building permit values in Exeter in the first 10 months of 1989 arc more than $2 million ahead of the same period a year ago. A 25 year old male faces multiple charges after a hit and run and high speed chase which began in Exeter and ended near Lpcan. Exeter councillors voiced their disapproval of Canada Post's super mail boxes as service has slowed considerably. A 15 -year-old young offender has been charged with three counts of attempted murder following a November 11 shooting incident in Usborne township. Mayor Bruce Shaw ca behalf of council apologized to the Exeter Mohawks on failing to invite team members to the recent town appre- ciation dinner after winning the .all -Ontario Senior B hockey cham- pionship. Centralia College's two day Showcase was a great success. November 29. Developer James Hevey of Lon- don walked away from Grand Bend council saying he would cancel plans for a $10 million con- dominium complex. Exeter and District Co -Operative experienced an operating deficit of $195,000 for 1989. - Both sides in the Grand Bend beach case predict they will win. Lee O'Rourke of Dashwood, a graduate of SHDHS set two records at a University of Western Ontario track 'and field meet. The 125th anniversary of the Ex- eter Cemetery was celebrated. December December 6 Exeter native John MacNaugh- ton was named president of the brokerage firm, Burns Fry Ltd. The Royal Bank of Canada opened a seniors banking area in Exeter at 118 Main Street. The North Middlesex High School Marauders won the all- ' Ontario "A" girls basketball cham- pionship. December 13 South IIuron Hospital will be a smoke-free facility beginning Feb- ruary 14, 1990. Similarily all public education buildings in Huron county will be smoke-free as of January 1, 1990. A Sesquicentennial committee in Stephen township is planning a number of special events for the 150th anniversary in 1992. Anonymous Gnnches who re- moved a number of Christmas dec- orations and lights from Exctcr homes returned them to the town police office. Supporters of Precious Blood Separate School in Exeter were up- set over a negative report on the condition of the school from a pub- lic inspection report from the Hu- ron Sheriffs office.
