January 4
A lockout of 290 striking em-
ployees of General Coach in.Hen-
sail continued after they rejected a
contract offer.
Joshua • kapitaniuk, RR3 Lucan,
was the first baby born in London
in 1989 at St. Joseph's Hospital.
• Workers at EMAB Canada at
Huron Park went out on strike
when negotiations broke down
with the chainsaw manufacturing
company.
The "beach case" at Grand Bend
continues as Archie Gibbs at-
tempts to prove ownership.
A group of six Exeter girls col-
lected $197.42 for UNICEF by
singing Christmas carols.
Charles Corbett, reeve of McGil-
livray township was named war-
den of Middlesex County for
1989.
The Exeter Broncos won the
1988 local atom hockey tourna-
ment.
January 11
Exeter council has decided to in-
stall flashing crosswalk lights at
the corner of Main and Wellington
streets.
Enrollment at Hensall Public
School rose to 200, the highest
since 1983,
• Grand Bend residents voiced
concern over a proposed seven -
storey apartment building.
[Rev. Mark Gaskin was inducted
as minister of Exeter Caven and
Hensall Carmel Presbyterian
Churches.
The Exeter Hawks won the 'B'
division of their own Junior D
tournament.
An Ontario Chapter of the Fel-
lowship of Christian Farmers was
organized at Centralia College.

Chelsea Leanne Rotteau, daugh-
ter of Brenda and Shawn Rotteau
was the first baby bol -n at South
Huron Hospital in 1989. •
The. Good family from Hensall
and the Barr's from Lucan left for
a two week stay to visit a -new
children's village in Bangladesh.
Exeter Fall Fair officials Focus
on Horses will be the focus of the
1989 fair.
Della Sims formerly of Crediton
celebrated her -98th birthday at the
Queensway Nursing Home in
Hensall.

At a special meeting, Exeter
council approved plans for relocat-
ing the existing fire hall to the
present public works building
which will be renovated. At the
same time municipal offices will
return to the old town hall.
A dispute between the Exeter
PUC and township of Usborne over
the cost of relocation of a water -
main has been ettled. Final figures
show that neither side won.
Work bees by Exeter Lions Club
members are reducing expenses at
the new youth centre._
PUC charges for new subdivision
development have been increased
to $450 per lot and $4.50 a foot
frontage.
February 8
Travel business operator Doug
Ellison charges mayor Bruce Shaw
with conflict of interest as the town
proposes to move the municipal of-
fice to the Old Town Hall where
Ellison is the major tenant.
Town council completed negotia-
tions to purchase property from the
Exeter Co -Op for $100,000 to build
a new fire hall.
The Times Advocate won two
top ,prizes in the annual Ontario
Community Newspaper Associa-
tion competition . including best
overall front page for broadfold pa-
pers.
Nabisco Brands were given per-
mission to store PCB's on their
property.
Police and striking workers at
EMAB at Huron Park clashed as
employees refused to let - a truck
pass picket lines.
Kathy Merner of Zurich was
named Grand Bend Winter Carni-
val Queen and the carnival attract-
ed 8,000 persons.

Zurich will be getting an OPP ex-
tension office in the near future.
The Exeter and District Heritage
Foundation received a grant from
the Ontario Ministry of Culture and
Recreation.
Leanne Bickell was named
Queen of the 1989 Kirkton-
Woodham Winter Carnival.
New rooms and added programs
provide a new look at the Lucan
Villa.
The Exeter Lions Sports Celebri-
ty Dinner was a hit for the 16th
year in a row.

ly barely escaped with their lives
when fire completely destroyed
their farm home in Stephen town-
ship.
The Blue Water Rest Home in
Zurich will receive $804,000 in
grants from the Ministry of Com-
munity and Social Services for ex-
pansion.
Tess Romaniuk, formerly of Ex-
eter and partner Derek Price were
featured in an article in Chatelaine
magazine highlighting their efforts
in fashion designing.
The Ministry of Environment in-
vestigated an oil spill on a sideroad
in Biddulph township.
An Exeter town police cruiser
was demolished when it struck a
tree on highway 4, south of town.
The Dining forSeniors program
is coming to Exeter. It will begin
in early April.
The Blyth Festival gets a
$900,000 grant to revitalize the
theatre.
Lee ORourke, formerly of South
Huron won a gold medal in the
triple jump to help the UWO wom-
en's track team to win a meet at the
University of Miami.
The Hensall-Zurich Combines of
1963-64 returned for a 25th anni-
versary celebration of their OHA
Junior D championship win.

Mollard submitted her resignation
to take a position with Bosanquct
township.
The Exeter fire hall land deal
was approved by council.
About two dozen women attend-
ed a farm safety workshop at Hu-
ies of Grand Bend have met with
mixed reviews. •
Exeter council delayed third read-
ing on a bylaw to purchase property
from Exeter Co-op to build a new
fire hall.
Workers at EMAB at Huron
Park ratified a new two-year con-

Hensel! figure skating club's car-
nival entitled "Fantasies" was a
great success.
The mortgage on the. Masonic
Hall of the Exeter Lebanon Forest
Lodge 133 was burned by the orig-
inal board of directors.

principal Bruce Shaw to Goderich,
Joe Wooden from Clinton to Exet-
er and Herb Murphy from Gode-

a 19 percent tax hike despite
strong opposition from the south.

sored by Exeter Welcome Wagon.
The Zurich figure skating club
presented a successful carnival en-
titled "Crystal Fantasy".
Kathy Merrier of Zurich won a
figure skating silver medal at the
Ontario Winter Games in North
Bay.
Doug Eckel is the new PUC
manager in Zurich replacing his fa-
ther Charles who left for a similar
position in Palmerston.
March 22
SHDHS students held a massive
demonstration which lasted 40
minutes to show their objection to
the transfer of principal Bruce
Shaw to Goderich.
Paul Broderick of Exeter was
sentenced to five years after he
pleaded guilty to a number of ar-
son charge including fires at Exet-
er and Usborne public schools.
Colleen Glasgow of Exeter was
named Toronto's Queen of the
Irish. She is a pharmacy student at
the University of Toronto.
Exeter council members took a
slight cut in their own salaries for
1989.
The Exeter bra'• �h of Charter -
ways set a record by transporting
school students more than 1.25
million miles without a single pre-
ventable accident.
Former Exeter figure skater Kel-
ly Hern won a gold medal at the 11-
derton Winter Club's Canadian In-
ternational precision skating
competition. She skates for the
Burlington skating club.
March 29
Grand Bend reeve Bob Sharer
presented council's initial restruc-
turing proposal of its area of
Lambton county to the Ministry of
Municipal Affairs.
Stephen township council pro-
tested to the Ministry of Municipal
Affairs a proposed annexation plan
by the village of Grand Bend.
A motor home suffered 535,000
damage and Andy Troyer suffered
facial burns during a fire at the Ex-
eter Co -Op Gas Bar.
The Exeter petite ringette team..
won .the Huron -Perth champion-
ship.
. Patti -Ann Dickert of the Zurich
Town and Country Lanes won the
zona bowling championship and
placed eighth at a provincial tour-
nament.

Rick Hundey was named admin-
istrator of the town of Exeter.
The new Exeter Lions Youth
Centre on John street west was offi-
cially opened.
Warner Marine of Grand Bend
recorded their earliest spring•launch
date in history on April 4.
Exeter council decided to stop ne-
gotiations on purchasing land from
Exeter Co -Op and will be seeking
another site for a new fire hall.
Exeter Postmaster Keith Ahrens
reported that new super mailboxes
would be in place by June 1.
The Exeter Mohawks won the
OHA Central Senior B Champion-
ship by defeating the Creemore
Chiefs.
TV Times was the title of a very
successful carnival presented by the
Lucan figure skating club.
April 12
The fourth annual Horne and Gar-
den Show sponsored by the Exeter
Optimists was bigger and better
than ever with attendance over
5,000.
The Huron Board of Education
says the transfer of three high
school principals is final.
Huron -Bruce MP Murray Cardiff
has been named parliament secre-
tary to Deputy -Minister and Agri-
culture Minister Don Mazankow-
ski. -
After a public meeting Grand
Bend reeve Bob Sharen said coun-
cil would steam ahead to.pass a by-
law to allow Sunday shopping.
Lucas councillors voiced concern
over a 26 percent increase in the
county of Middlesex tax rate for .

Exeter Agricultural Society's first
quilt show attracted 1,000 persons
to see 150 exhibits of quilts.
The Exeter, Mohawks won the
all -Ontario Seior B title sweeping
the Dresden Lumber Kings in four
straight games.
The Stephen township novice
hockey team won the WOAA
championship for the second con-
secutive year.
Former Biddulph township reeve
Wilson Hodgins was honored for
37 years of consecutive servicc"to
his municipality.

awakening the Peter and Angela
Rutten family, near Mount Carmel
when their home was heavily dam-
aged by fire.
