Mohawks regain first place with six points
EXETER- Just when it looked
Iikc the Exctcr Mohawks were go-
ing to slip further back in the
Southern Senior A Hockey League
Standings, by losing three straight
games, they got back on.their win-
ning ways last week, coming up
with victories in Aylmer and Dor-
chester and a win at home Sunday
night against Dunnville.
The Mohawks went into last
Tuesday night's game in Aylmer
two points back of the league -
leading Hornets and played their
best checking game of the year
turning back Aylmer 7-5.
Friday night, the Mohawks were
forced into overtime against the
Dolphins but Joc Scherer's bullet
at 7:02 of the extra' period found
thc net and sent the Mohawks home
with an outright hold on first place.
Sunday night, the Mohawks spot-
ted the Mudcats a 2-1 lead after the
opening period, but exploded for
five goals in four -and -a -half min-
utes early in the second period
pounding Dunnville 9-3.
The six -goal outburst in that peri-
od proved to be too much for the
Mudcats as they fell behind by the
six -goal margin. The Mohawks
also outshot the Mudcats 46-23.
The high -scoring line of Dave
Randcrson, Quincy Wilkcr and
Paul Barton was reunited for this
contest, after Barton missed five
games with a shoulder injury. They
did most of the damage to Dunn-
ville.
•Randcrson led the way with four
•goals and one assist, (he also hit
two goal posts in the last period),
Wilker had one goal and three as-
sists and Barton chipped in with
two assists.
Scherer contributed a pair of
goals and an assist, while Gord
Brooks and Bill Glover both had a
goal and an assist.
Defenceman Lcs Arts also set up
a pair of goals, while single assists
went to Ron Elliot, Jeff Warren and
Mark Sochner.
Exeter 5 Dorchester 4 (OT)
Exeter overcame a 4-3 deficit af-
ter two periods, and managed to get
the tying goal with 23 seconds left
in regulation before Scherer's hero-
ics in overtime.
Scoring for the Mohawks in this
game were; Al Gates from Soehner
and Dale Gibbon, Glover from
Scherer, Arts from Randerson and
Elliot , Randy Bailey from Warren
and McClenaghan, and Scherer
from Arts.
Rick Pikyl stopped 28 of 32 shots
that were sent his way by Dolphin
players, while the Mohawks had 3R
on Dorchester goalie John Farrell;
Exeter 7 Aylmer 5
The Mohawks also had to come _
from behind in this game, as they
were trailing 2-1 after the opening
period. Brooks managed to get Ex-
eter on the board with a bullet slap
shot from Snider and' Warren with
6:11 left in the first period, after
Aylmer had taken a quick 2-0 lead.
Aylmer went up 3-1 after scoring
a quick goal early in the second pe-
riod. But Exeter took control of the
game after that and the hard work
finally paid off with a goal at 14:07
when Scherer scored from Rander-
son and Wilker, Brooks tied the
game from Glover just 1:33 later
and they took the lead when Wilker
potted one from Randerson with
1:40 left in the second frame.
Snider netted an early third -
period goal to make it a 4-2 game
and Wilkcr followed that up with a
goal from Gates four minutes latei-.
Bailey made it 7-3 with a goal from
Jeff Shipley mid -way through the
final period.
Hardy Cup draw
The opening round of the Hardy
Cup tournament, January 19-21 in
Exeter and Hensall, was conducted

Hawks move into tie for second with Mitchell
EXETER - With three wins last
week, the Exeter. Hawks have
moved into a tic for second place in
the Western Junior D Hockey
league standings with the Mitchell
Hawks, both with 25 points.
The Hawks beat the Tavistock
Braves twice, 5-4 in Tavistock Sat-
urday night and 12-2 Friday night
at the South Huron Rec centre They
squeaked by the league -leading Lu-
can Irish 7-6 in Lucan last Wednes-
day night.
Saturday night, the Hawks pep-
pered Tavistock goalie Jeff Redfern
with 24 shots for two periods while
Tavistock had only 12 on Exeter
goalie Clint McCann but Tavistock
found themselves ahead 4-2 head-
ing to the third.
The Hawks only managed eight
shot$, in the final period, while Ta-
vistock had seven, but Exeter made
the most of their chances scoring
three times, all on the power -play,
to take the win.
Doug Clark led the way with a
pair of goals and an assist, while
single goals went to Al Blommaert,
Jcan-Paul Cousineau and Bob
Hearn netting the winner.
Bryan Quinn had a pair of assists,
while Dave O'Connor, Scott Tay-
lor, Larry Lewis, Cousincau and Ja-
mie Tomes all had one assist.
Exeter 12 Tavistock 2
The Hawks had a much easier
time of it Friday night at home,
breaking open a 3-2 game after one
peridd, with four tallies in the sec-
ond period. They added five more
in the third, outshooting the Braves
62-26 in thc contest.
Quinn was the top scorer Friday
night with four, Clark added three,
Paul Manders had a pair, while
Gregg Blackler, Cousineau and
Scott Taylor chipped in with one
each.
Cousincau also had five assists,

of action between the pipes for Ex-
ctcr but made some nice saves
when he was called upon.
Hawks beat Irish
Last Wednesday, the Hawks spot-
ted the Irish a 2-0 lead after the first
period and 3-1 early in the second
before finally coming to life.
Exeter didn't get on the board un -
two minutes into the second
when Mark Reid found the mark
from Lewis and Tomes, cutting the
Lucan lead to 2-1 at that point.
After Lucan went up 4-1 mid
way through the second, Exeter
went to work and managed to get
back on even terms before the sec-
ond period was history.
Harlen Tinney scored from
Blommacrt and Joc Weston at
11:46 of the second, Clark scored
from Cousincau and Jeff Chipchase
while on the power -play at 16:51
and Hearn tied the game less than a
minutc later, from Blackler and
Blommacrt.
Greg Dcprest gave Lucan a 5-4
lead with a goal two minutes into
the third, but Blackler scored the
tying goal from Taylor and Lewis
at 6:02 they tookthe lead for good
on David Dalrymple's unassisted
tally two minutes later. Blackler got
an insurance goal from Taylor at
16:46.
Lucan got one back with three
seconds left in the game but it was
not enough.
Lucan's game in Seaforth Friday
night was postponed until next
month.
Next game for the Irish is tonight,
Wednesday, when Seaforth will be
at the Lucan Arena at 8:15 p.m.,
while the next game for Exeter will
