Irish unbeaten streak hits seven games
M11 CHELL - The Lucan Irish
extended their unbeaten streak to
seven games to start the season and
improved their overall record to 6-
0-1 with a pair of victories last
week.
In their first home game in al-
most a month, the Irish disposed of
the Wellesley Appplejacks by a 6-3
count last Wednesday night and
came back Friday night to hand the
Mitchell Hawks their second loss
of the year, by a 6-4 score.
The Irish won last Wednesday's
game by scoring three times in the
first and second period, while limit-
ing the Applejacks to one goal in
the first and two more in the sec-
ond.
Scoring for thelrish in the first
period were; Jeff Hirtzell from
Brian Schuyler and Ed Van Kerkle,
Tim Hayter from Rick Weishar and
Joe Fcbrey and Andy Ross from
Darren Neil.
Hayter got his second of the con-
test early in the third, Trom Febrey
and Weishar, to make it a 4-1 con-
test, but Neil added one from Greg
Dcprest and Jamie Pearce closed
out the scoring for Lucan after be-
ing set up by Weishar.
Sam Kulafofski had a pair of
goals for Wellesley.
Friday night's game was a penal-
ty -filled contest with several
players being thrown out of the
game for both sides. During the
game, the Irish lost the services of
Todd Hayter, Greg Southam, Jack
Legg, Jamie Pearce and,Glen Mar-
shall, while Mitchell received five
game misconducts and coach Bob
Ward received a match penalty for
"molesting" the referee when the
game was over.
Irish coach Ken Needham said he
didn't know the Mitchell coach had
been given a misconduct until Sat-
urday and doesn't know what would
have eaused Ward to do what he
did.
"It was a rough game right from
the start but no rougher than most
and I didn't even hear he was tossed
until Saturday night because I was
leaving the ice going to our dress-
ing room and I didn't sec anything
happen," said Needham.
The Irish made the difference
with three second -period goals,
which broke open a 2-2 tie at the
end of the first period. The two ex-
tra goals the Irish scored in the sec-
ond proved to be their margin of
victory.
The Irish also made good use of
their specialty teams, scoring three
times while on a power -play and
twice while short handed.
Scoring for the Irish were;
Weishar from Scott Mackey and
Tim Hayter, Ross from Van Kerkle
and Todd Hayter, Marshall from
Hirtzell, Deprest from Hirtzell and
Marshall, Schuyler unassisted and
Legg from Weishar.
Lucan was outshot 29-20 in the
game but got timely goaltending
from Dan Jenken to help win the
game.
Needham said he never expected
to unbeaten at this point in the sea-
son.
"Never in my wildest dreams did
I think we would be going unde-
feated so far, but all good pings
must come to an end sometime,"
said Needham.
The Irish will play the Tavistock
Braves in a home -and -home series
starting tonight at the Lucan Arena
at 8:15 and the second game will be
back at the Tavistock Arena Friday
night at 8:30 p.m.
