Dickins ruptures spleen during
Hawks victory in Seaforth
SEAFORTH - The Exeter Hawks
received their second "freak" injury
in as many weeks Sunday after-
, noon, when captain Jim Dickins
collapsed at the Hawk bench late in
the game after taking a hit along.
the boards. Many who saw the
game said the hit on Dickins was
clean.
Dickins was taken to Seaforth
Hospital and later transferred to
Stratford, where he had his spleen
removed in an operation Sunday
night. It is believed Dickins' spleen
ruptured as a result of the check
along the boards.
On October 28 at the South Hu-
ron Rec Centre, last year's leading
scorer Derek Shackleton was
slashed by a Mitchell Hawk player,
breaking Shackleton's hand and fin-
ger. He will be lost to the team at
-least until Christmas. Dickins will
likely be lost to the team for the
rest of the year.
Despite the injuries, the Hawks
hada successful week, winning all
three=otftheir games, improving
their record to 6-3 on the season.
Last Wednesday, Exeter went to
the Mitchell Arena and handed the
Mitchell, Hawks•their first loss of
the season bya 5-3 score. Saturday
night at the South Huron Rec Cen-
tre, the locals defeaked . the Tavis-
tock Braves 3-1 and got a pair of
goals from Dickins before he got
hurt Sunday and beat the Cente-
•naires by an 8-3 count.
Jean-Paul Cousineau led the way
with a hat trick inthe win in Mitch-
ell, while Paul Manders'and Doug
Clark picked up the single goals.
Larry Lewis, Bob Hearn, Scott
Taylor, Harlon Tinney, David Dal-
rymple, Bryan Quinn, Jeff Chip -
chase and .Greg Blackler all con-
tributed one assist each to the
victory. ,
Exeter fired 40 shots at Mitchell
netminder Jason Ballantyne while
Exeter goalie Todd Campbell
stopped 29 shots fired in his direc-
tion. s.
Dickins played a major roll in the
Jim Dickins
win Saturday night over Tavistock
as well, netting two more goals.
Exeter scored twice in the first
period, Quinn from Tinney and
Taylor and Dickins from Manders,
while Dickins added another in the
second period from Manders and
Jamie Tomes, while Jason Cole
broke Campbell's bid for a shutout
late in the game for Tavistock, with
an unassisted tally.
Exeter 8 Seaforth 3
Sunday's game was decided early
when the Hawks exploded for four
goals in the first period while hold-
ing Seaforth to just one. Each team
scored once in the second but the
locals added three more in the third,
to make it a five -goal margin of vic-
tory.
Scoring for Exeter in this game
were; Tinney from Manders and
Chipchase, Dickins from David
O'Connor, Dickins from Chipchase
and O'Connor, Cousineau from Joel
Weston, Chipchase from Jesse Hen-
derson and Mark Reid, Cousineau
from Weston and Quinn, Tinney
from Manders and Taylor and Tin-
ney completed his hat trick, from
Dalrymple and Dickins.
Campbell played another out-
standing game in goal for the
Hawks.
The Hawks had a successful day
at the their Poor Boy Luncheon Sat-
urday serving up lots of spaghetti
dinners.
They also had their programs on
sale at Saturday's game. They will
be on sale all year for 50 cents and
have profiles on all the players,
along with this year's roster and
schedule.
Next game for the Hawks is Fri-
day night when the Wellesley Ap-
plejacks will be at the South Huron
Rec Centre for an 8:30 p.m. game.
Next Tuesday; November 14, the
Hawks will play a return match
with the Centenaires, also at the
SHRC at -8:30 p.m. -
Football teams advance to Finals

EXETER - On Thursday, South
, Huron District High School's Jun-
ior football team defeated the Lis-
towel Lords 15-12 in semi-final
play to advance to the Huron -Perth
championship game on Saturday.
The Lords opened scoring for the
game in the first quarter when their
quarterback recovered a fumble at
mid -field while being tackled and
handed it to a receiver who ran the
length of the field for the touch-
down.
The Panthers answered in the
second quarter with two touch-
downs. Jason McNeil came
through on a 12 -yard touchdown
run. Dan Masse. scored on a 15 -
yard pass and run from John -Paul
Maurer.
Maurer played well for his first
game as a starting quarter back as
he also ran for a two-point convert
and kicked a one point convert.
McNeil ran well as he managed
to rush for nearly 200 yards.
Listowcl's second touchdown'
was the result of a penalty and a
fumble on a punt'attempt. They got
possession of the ball on the Pan-
thers three yard line and scored.
Tne .Junior Panthers now' meet
the Goderich Vikings on Saturday
in Godcrich at 1:30 p.m.
"The Goderich Juniors ar a

EXETER - South Huron District
High School's girls' basketball
teams were busy this week with two
league games against F.E. Madill
and Stratford Northwestern.
The Senior and Midget teams
split games vvhilc the junior girls,
who only played one game, went
down to dcfcat.
Although it took a while for the
Senior Panthers to get going against
Madill, eventually they claimed a
38-28 victory.

Christine Rose led the Panthers
scoring with 11 points followed by
Julia Merner with eight and Mi-

Tykes lose
BLYTH - The llensall Tykes
travelled to Blyth on Saturday for
their first game of the season.
For six of the players it was
the first game of their career.
Hensall opened the scoring when
Ryan Groot won the opening face-
off and raced in to score unassisted.
Unfortunately this was to be
Hensall's only goal.
Rookie goalie Tanner Ingram
made some outstanding saves.
What the boys lacked on the
Scoreboard was made up in fun and
enthusiasm. Final score was Blyth
17 and Hensall 1.
Next game for the Tykes is Satur-
day in Clinton.

Against Northwestern, the Senior
girls played a tremendoris game but
fell short 29-25.
Merncr played an excellent game
and was top scorer with 12 points.
Ellison followed with six and Mi-

The Junior „kids played one
league game against Stratford
Northwestern but seemed to have
some extreme difficulty.; The Pan-
thers proved to belittle competition
for their opposition)osing 71-16.

The Midget Panthel's took their
fourth victory in league play 30-17
over F.E. Madill on Wednesday.
Becky Hartman played a terrific
game and was top scorer.
. The, girls played extremely well
against Stratford Northwesitern as
theonl traded by a few points for
most ofY the game. Unfortunately
Noriwestcrn took the 35:22 victo-
ry.
Irrartn11n led scoring again with
six points while • Chris Passmore
and Chris Schad° had five points
each.
All three of SH's girls' basketball
teams complete regular season
league games today (Wednesday)
against Stratford Central at home.
Playoffs begin next week.
