Times -Advocate, NoVennber 8, 1989 Page 15 Hensall churches mark Remembrance Day By Susan Hartman HENSALL - Remembrance Day Service was observed at Carmel Presbyterian Church, Hensall on Sunday when the Hensall United Church congregation with their Pas- tor Rev. Doug Wright, Branch 468 -Royal Canadian Legion, Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 468, Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Venturers, Explor- ers, Brownies and their leaders all joined to remember those who paid so dearly for our freedom. At the close of the service every- one was invited to the Cenotaph where the service continued with the laying of the wreaths. The loose collection was donated to the War Amps of Canada. - Explorers The Hensall Explorers celebrated their Initiation and Fust Star Cere- mony with the Parkhill Explorers on Monday, October 30 at the Hen- sall United Church. Chief Counselor, Joanne Row- cliffe, opened the ceremonies by welcomins the Parents and thank- ing Parkhill for making the extra ef- fort to come to Hensall. The Explorers being initiated first repeated their purpose after which Hensa11 leaders Shirley McAllister and Marg Cole handed out the Ex- plorer Emblem. The new members then repeated their Explorer Motto. Afterwards Hensall Chief Explorer, Katie Rathwell, and keeper of the Treasure, Lisa Campbell, presented each girl with her Explorer red rib - Haunted House raises funds for new St. Boniface youth group By Carmel Sweeney ZURICH - The newly -formed St. Boniface youth group raised $456 Last week at their Haunted House at the church rectory. The Hal- lowe'en project made use of the ' empty building to put a scare into many of the youngsters, who visited the show that night. The raised funds will go a long way towards supporting the group's upcoming projects and activities. The lovely patchwork quilt was won by Shirley! Scriver from Wes- ton (near Toronto), which goes to show how far people were willing to travel to visit the event. The mat braided by Juliette Denomme was won by Lee Regier of Zurich. Fa- ther Hayes won the ceramic nativity scene donated by the sisters. Save those tapes Everyone is being asked to save their Tender Spot grocery tapes for the Cubs and Brownies. Boxes are set up in the store to collect the tapes so a donation can be made to those groups towards new camping equipment. CWL Bazaar Saturday's Bazaar, Bake Sale and Tea held by the Si. Boniface CWL was rated a big success by the group. Harvest Dance The St. Boniface Knights of Co- lumbus have finalized plans for their annual Harvest Dance. This year's event will be on Saturday November, 25 at the Zurich Com- munity Centre. Tickets will be $6 per person and can be purchased from members or at the door. Youth group The youth group of the Zurich Mennonite Church held an inspir- ing three-day youth exchange last weekend for nearly 45 youths. Some came from Poole and St. Agatha and stayed at the homes of their new Zurich friends. Finally, Hensall leader, Shirley McAllister, and Parkhill leader, Beth Walkey, handed out the well- deserved Membership Certificates. The First Star Ceremony immedi- ately followed the Initiation Cere- mony. During this time Shirley McAllister and Beth Walkey pre- sented the new members with their first Red Star as a symbol of their successful completion of the Explo- ration "Becoming an Explorer". The next big event involving the Explorers from Hensall, Parkhill and Stratford will be the Explorers Peace Service to be held at the Hen- sall United Church on Sunday, No- vember 12 at 11 a.m. Everyone wel- come! Northcrest news Sadie Hoy spent the weekend with son Michael and Mary -beth and family in London. Babe McGregor was pleased to shave Ken and Grace Wilbee of Na- panee and Bob and Louise Sage of Listowel call on her on Sunday. Mac Munroe of Whitby spent last week with his mother Dorothy Munroe. Barry McKnight of Kenora visit- ed last week with his Aunt and Un- cle Glen and Pearl McKnight. Winners Winners of the Pumpkin Man - Hallowe'en draws at the Hensall Post Office last .week were Shawn Olsen and Shauna Koehler. Hensall Atoms Hockey team won their Home Opener last Wednesday with a 3-0 victory over Clinton. Goal scorers - were Rob Hopkins, Greg Keys and Brock Weiss. Rest Home theft victim ZURICH - Evidently there are people who do not consider hones- ty to be the best policy. The reflec- tors which were erected at the en- trance of the new driveway leading to the receiving area and staff park- • ing lot have been removed twice. At this time of year when the days arc short, foggy or stormy the driveway is not readily visible without reflectors. Large delivery trucks, evening and night nurses, and even visitors who use this driveway could be severely injured. This happened during the past month and was not a Hallowe'en prank. Sorry if this sounds like ,sour grapes, but even you might suffer directly okindirectly from such an act. _ • Residents welcomed quite a large number ofchildren dressed in cos- tume to collect their treats and visit with their relatives on Hallowe'en night. Residents are busy in the hobby shop trying to keep up to the orders received for the Christmas season. Clayton Golden Glimpses Kuepfei of the Zurich Mennonite church conducted a joint commun- ion service for all who -wished to participate. Fr. Hayes of St. Boni- face church conducted mass for his parishioners. Rev. Stephen Alles,of St. Peter's Lutheran church, Zurich held a communion service on Fri- day afternoon. On Thursday evening, the girls' club of the Zurich Mennonite church provided aprogram of sing- ing and piano solos and presented each Resident with two hand made butterflies. Refreshments of muf- fins and apple juice were enjoyed. The Sunday evening chapel .ser- vice was conducted by Rev. Doug- las Wright of Hensall United • Church. Mr. John Warner presided at the organ during the worship ser- vice.
