vest -time meal for the members
present. A brave Lioness, Ann
Thompson, led the members in 0'
Canada, while she played on the pi-
ano.
Special guests for the evening
were Julie Lee, co-ordinator, and
Sally Walker, president of the
board of directors of Survival
through Friendship House, Gode-
rich.
Julie Lee is a dynamic speaker on
the subject of battered wives and
children for Huron County and on
the wide spectrum of what is hap-
pening within our community.
Help is needed to shelter and house
families when the situation arises.
All over Canada and U.S. there is
an increasing number of battered
wives and children. Battering can
be physical, mental and psycholog-
ical (the negative effect).
She stated that statistics show
that one in 11 marriages result in
sexual assault.
The conditions of life do not
seem to set the form for battering.
Geographical region, alcohol, men-
tal illness, education, religion, race,
and high pressures, do not seem to
make a difference. A wide spec-
trum of families are covered. Nine-
ty-sevenpercent of the time, the
abuser is male.
Survival Through Friendship
House has safe homes in Huron
County where mothers and kids
can stay together, to helpget their
lives back together again.
Some other services are a 24-
hour crisis line, a team of workers
to help, Counselling Advocate
Centre and confidentiality. Their
hopes are to establish Second Stage
Housing in three different sites,
known as Phoenix System in Hu-
ron County. It is through Society's
help and understanding that this
problem will be alleviated and
helped.
The Float Committee reported
that their theme for the Exeter
Christmas Parade will be a Teddy
Bear's Picnic, and that the Lioness
will be collecting goods and toys,
along the parade route to be donat-
ed to the Huron County'Christmas
Bureau.
The Annual Exeter Lioness
Christmas Craft Auction will be
held on Thursday, November 23 at
7:30 p.m. at the Exeter Lions Youth
Centre.
Between November 1 and No-
vember 19 the Exeter Lioness mem-
bers will be taking orders for cedar
garlands at a cost of $17.00 for a
75' roll. Take a moment and place
an order now with Lioness Lossy
Fuller (235-0684) or Lioness Laurie
Dykstra (235-0310) for your Christ-
mas decorating cedar garland. Don't
be disappointed.
Installation of new Lioness mem-
bers will take place at the regular
November meeting on November
27. District Lioness President Janet
Dawson will be present.
