SHIPKA - The Healthy Snack
Attackers held their last meeting on
Monday October 23 at Sarah Patter -
son's house. The meeting began at
6:30 p.m. with the 4H pledge, fol-
lowed by the roll call.
After the members prepared a veg-
etable tray with dip and rice pud-
ding, they worked on their books
for the remainder of the meeting.
The next meeting will be held at
Donna Lovie's. Reported by Pam
Dietrich.
Bus trip
Anyone interested in a bus trip on
December 19, to seethe Christmas
lights at•Sarnia, phone 238-2948.

Sincere sympathy of this commu-
nity is expressed to Ken Baker, his
family and grandchildren, in the
death last week of his wife Ortha.
A large number of Shipka and
area folks attended her funeral last
Saturday at St. Peter's Lutheran
Church, Zurich.
Hugh and I returned home last
Monday October 23 from a four day
weekend in Mio, Michigan, where
we visited cousins, Roy and Jean
Boerner, Bill Maier, Dennis Maier,
Bob and Pam Boerner, Christina
and Robbie. We had the pleasure of
sharing in Christina's sixth birthday
party.
We saw deer and wild turkeys.
Each morning at breakfast, several
wild turkeys came out of the bush
and had their morning meal on fal-
len apples in the Boerer's orchard.
Harold Vincent and Gordon Vin-
cent, of Shipka and area-, Charles
Dittmer, Dashwood, and Max
Tiedeman, Grand Bend have returned
from a moose hunting trip in
Northern Ontario. One of these men
told me they "almost" got the one
that got away.

GRANTON - Mr. and Mrs. Ross
Westman recently enjoyed a vaca-
tion in Houston, Texas.

ed the turkey supper at Holy Trinity
Anglican Church in Lucan on
Wednesday evening, October 25.
Weekend and Sunday visitors
with Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hod-
gins were John Herbert of Tillson-
burg, Lois Herbert, Betty Anne
Waugh, Rod Johnston, Glen, Mari-
an and Jason Hall, all of London.
"The Shoemakers" Holiday at the
Stratford Festival Theatre was
pleasant entertainment last Wednes-
day evening, as the season draws to
a close for another year.
Anglican Church
At the St. Thomas' Anglican
Church on Sunday, October 29, the
Rev. Beverley Wheeler's message
was about self-righteousness based
on the parable of the Pharisee and
the tax collector.
The lessons were read by Marlon
French and the minister.
.Special music was provided by

and Peter Daniels of the Arise
Group from London.
The sketches of the three church-
es in the parish on the front of the
bulletin were done by Sylvia Beat -
son.

The bible study was held at the
rectory in Kirkton on Monday eve-
ning, October 23.
United Church
At the Granton United Church on
Sunday, the Rev. Bruce Pierce's
sermon was about the "Silence of
God". The lessons were from
Psalm 28 and Romans 15. Tiffany
and Veronica Blom were the bulle-
tin stewards.
The youth group met at the
church on Sunday evening.
I hope everyone has been enjoy-
ing the lovely spell of Indian sum-
mer weather, we had last week as
much as I did. It was great for fin-
ishing up the last of outdoor jobs.
4-H club learn about insurance, food

VARNA - The fifth 4-H meeting
of the "Hazard Helpers" was held
on October 25 at 6 p.m. at Sandra
Turner's.
The roll call was "What different
types of insurance could your fami-
ly purchase". Most answered with
fire, life and health insurance.
Their first._guest speakers were
Sue Baker i`rom Guelph and Hugh
Hendrick from Kippen who spoke
on liability and auto insurance.
They discussed no fault auto insu-
rance which is to be voted on in
January.
Their next speaker was Peter Roy
from Clinton who spoke on crop
and life insurance.
This was a very interesting meet-
ing and they now know what it
means to "insurance poor".
The next meeting will be held
November 8 at 6 p.m. at Sandra
Turner's. Books and projects are to
be completed on that date.
Varna 4-H•
The Varna 4-H club, newly
named and now known as the "Fast
Food Mixers", met at Cheryl Tal-
bot's on October 23 at 7 p.m.
They discussed the uses of mi-
crowaves and completed a true and
false quiz on microwave cooking.
They then prepared and tasted
"S'mores and grape spritzers.
Plans were made for the next
meeting to be another meal on Oc-
tober 30 at 5 p.m. at Gail Turner's.
Stan Lee Club
The Stan Lee Club will be having
their regular meeting on Tuesday,
November 7 at 8 p.m. in the Com-
plex. Please bring lunch.
Un November 15 at 2 ;,.m., Stan
Lee Club with some additional
helpers, will entertain the residents
of Huronview at their November
Birthday party. It is hoped that
each member will bring along a
pan of squares or 2-3 dozen cook-
ies to serve with tea provided by
Huronview. We hope all club
members will come along to -help
either with the program or serving
the lunch and the residents will be
looking forward to visiting with
everyone.
Varna UCW
Thursday, November 2 Varna
U.C.W. meet at 8 p.m. at the
church. The Youth Group met at
the manse at 7:30 p.m. on Novem-
ber 2.
This Sunday, November 5 is Re-
membrance Sunday. Church servic-
es will be as usual but Varna will
have their Remembrance Service at
the Cenotaph at 10:45 a.m.
Goshen United Church had an-
other successful supper on October
25 selling all their available tickets.
Everyone enjoyed coming out on
such a beautiful warm evening.

Barbara Barden of Surrey, B.C.
retumed home on Sunday afternoon
after spending a week with her fam-
ily, Bruce and Anna Keys and Er-
vin and Helen Keys and family, as
well as other relatives and friends in
the area. Marilyn and Jim Laing
and family of Mississauga joined
them for the weekend.
Mery and Marg Hayter were in
Weston over the weekend attending
Marg's nephew's wedding, Mark
Glenn and Carolyn• Ainsworth on
Saturday.

House in honour of their parents'
40th Wedding Anniversary to be
held Sunday, November 5 from 2 to
4 p.m. at the Stanley Township
Complex. Happy 40th Floyd and

Lucan OPP investigate
barbershop break-in
LUCAN - Sometime after 11:00
p.m. on Friday October 27, Pow -
ell's Barber Shop at 34 Main Street
Granton, was broken into. The east
side windows were broken and the
doors were forced to gain entry into
the shop. Approximately $50 of ci-
gars were stolen. Police are contin-
uing their investigation.
Also during the night, an un-
known vehicle damaged the lawn at
the Hotson residence at 155 Well-
ington t. Lucan. The vehicle spun
its tires on the lawn between 9:30
p.m. and midnight. Police are neck-
ing information about this incident
and are asking residents who may
have heard or seen this happen to
call the detachment.
A vehicle was parked on the Cen-
tre Sideroa of Biddulph
Concession h J overnight on
Friday night. Suineone broke the
windshield, right side windows, an-
tenna, side mirrors and right wire
rims on the 1980 Oldsmobile Toro-
nado. About $1,000. damage was
done to the vehicle. Police have no
suspects and this time.
Only .one accident during the
week involved injuries, and these
were minor. About 2:20 a.m. on
Saturday October 28, a black 1989
Dodge pickup was struck by a
northbound 1978 Oldsmobile at
the intersection of Main and Mar-
ket Streets in Lucan. The driver of
the Oldsmobile, Darlene Hagen of
Lucan, and one of her daughters
Stephanie Hagen were treated at
University Hospital. Philip Harri-
gan, age 28 of RR3 Denfield was
the driver of the Dodge pickup. He
has been charged with impaired
driving.
A total of 48 general occurrences
and seven motor vehicle accidents_
were investigated by members of
the Ontario Provincial Police at
Lucan Department during the past
week. Most incidents were minor
in nature and several others have
been cleared.
With the clocks being changed
back one hour last weekend, dark-
ncss will come earlier in the even-
ing now. Please turn your lights
on for safety while driving and
please watch carefully for children
on the streets.
