Shelley )-loffman as "Bobbi Michele" and Guy Sanvido as "Barney Cashman" in the Huron Country
Playhouse's Last of the Red Hot Lovers.
Red Hot, only Lukewarm
By Adrian Harte
GRAND BEND - Last of the R( :1 Hot Lovers
opened last week at the Huron Countr r Playhouse, a
show that may leave some of the audit nce scratching
their heads wondering why what they 5 aw was ever on
stage.
Last of the Red 1lot Lovers isa Neil Simon creation
of three acts. In each act the married Barney Cashman
(played by Guy Sanvido) attempts an affair with a
woman at his mother's apartment. Because no more
than two people arc on stage at any one time, the play
requires well -executed dialogue for survival.
Barney is a boring guy who drives a Buick and
wears blue suits. He wants an affair to inject a little
exitement into his dull existence.
"Life has not only been very kind to me, it goes out
of its way to ignore me," says Barney in his impas-
sioned plea to Elaine (Marsha Nicols), - a speech
which is probably the play's high point and thus
presents a problem for both cast and director because
it falls in the first act. None of Simon's following dia-
logue seems to quite match that level of strength or
emotion. .
In the second act Barney tries again with a young,
paranoid actress, (Shelley Hoffman) fails and tries
again in the third act with his wife's depressed friend
Jeanette (Jenny Turner), who reduces the world to
indecent people and idiots.
"Aren't you worried about the times we live in?"
asks Jeanette. "All the promiscuity everywhere?"
"I'm not finding it anywhere," retorts Barney.
Barney is neither red hot nor a lover, Barney is just
a messenger from Neil Simon telling us the world isn't
all sinful and bad - nothing earth -shattering here.
Underneath its attempts at humour, Last of the Red
Hot Lovers is a dark and moody play. The cast
delivers it well enough that we can leave the theatre
saying we enjoyed it and at times were intrigued by it,
but we also can't help wondering if we missed some-
tWng along the way.

EXETER - H11 from everyone
at the Exeter Villa. You haven't
heard from us for awhile and so we
have some catching up to do.
We have quite a few birthdays
during the first days of August.
Happy birthday to Mabel Kyle,
Audrey Boland, Ethel Johnston and
Ray Ballantyne. Also celebrating
arc staff members Laurie Swan and
Lottie Greasier.
Several residents in the Lodge
celebrated birthdays in July.
Thanks to the Bourne famly for the
lovely cake. Celebrating last
month were Evelyn Heywood, Rita
Smith, Silas McFalls, Mike
Bourne and Irene Smith.
A special thank you to the ladies
of the Elimville U.C.W. for the
lovely program. It was good to see
all of our friends from the Elim-
ville arca.
Our baking groups have been
very busy over the past weeks try-
ing different recipes. It is fun to
bake but the most popular job
seems to be die_ tasting. We have
enjoyed sampling, peanut butter
cookies, bran muffins, banana muf-
fins and sugar cookies.
Get well wishes to Robert Turn-
bull. We hope to see you home
again soon. Residents and staff
send their sympathy to the Semple
family on the passing of their sis-
ter and aunt Rachel (Rae).
Thought for the week: People are
funny! Everyone wants to live a
long time, but no one wants to get
old.
