Swim team starts season at Stratford meet
STRATFORD :The Exeter Bara-
cudas Swim team had their first
meet of the season Saturday in
Stratford. Some swimmers did well
individually but the team ,placed
fifth in the five -team field.
In defence of the Exeter team, the
locals had the smallest team in the
meet. Goderich was first overall
with 479 point but had 40 swim-
mers take part. Seaforth and Vanas-
tra combined for one team with 25
members and placed second with
198 points. Stratford with 19
swimmers was third with 160
points. Clinton with 17 swimmers
was fourth with 141 points and Ex-
eter, with 15 swimmers, was fifth
with 103.5 points.
Lisa Forrest did the best of any
local swimmers claiming three first
place ribbons and a second place.
Forrest took first in the Girls 13
and 14, 100 metre individual med-
lay with a time of 48.66 seconds.
She also took first in the girls but-
terfly in a time of 44.1 seconds,
first in her division . in the 100m
breast stroke in a time of 39.14 sec-
onds, and was runner up in the
100m freestyle in a time of 32.94
seconds.
Sandra Vanderlaan also did very
well in her first meet of the season.
Vanderlaan placed second in the
girls' 11 and 12 freestyle in a time
of 35.2 seconds. She tied for fourth
in her division in the 50 m back-
stroke in a time of 47.33 seconds,
had another fourth place finish in
the 50m breast stroke in a time of
52.4 seconds and a third-place rib-
bon in the 25m butterfly in a time
of 24.5 seconds.
Maggie . Steciuk placed third in
the girls eight -and -under 25m free-
style in a time of 29.63 seconds,
fourth place in the 25m breast
stroke in a time of 41.41 seconds
and a second in the 25m butterfly,
flying in a time of 45.21 seconds.
Sandra Steele competed in the
same division and placed fourth in
the freestyle in 31.2 seconds, sec-
ond in the breast stroke in a time of
38.82 seconds and first in the but-
terfly in a tinning time of 43.25
seconds.
In the boys' 11 and 12 division,
Gavin Poole placed fourth in the
50m freestyle in a time of 43.9 sec-
onds, second in the 50 breast,
stroke, in 35.7 seconds, and second
in the 25m butterfly in a time of 29
seconds.
In the boys eight -and -under divi-
sion, Chris Finch placed fourth in
the 25m backstroke in 53 seconds,
and sixth in the 25m breast stroke
in a 51.9 seconds.
In the boys 13 and 14 division,
Derek VanDyken placed third in the
50m free style in 34 seconds, while
Ryan Stuart was fourth in a time of
35.3 seconds. VanDyken was third
in the 50m backstroke in 47.2 sec-
onds, third also in the 50m breast
stroke in 50.17 seconds and Stuart
finished third in the 50m butterfly
in a time of 50.5 seconds.

meet of the season Saturday in Stratford and placed very

Express sweep doubleheader from Walkerton
WALKERTON - Exeter's Dave
Shaw pitched a complete -game two -
hitter in the first game and the Ex-
press pounded out eigbt hits in the -
night cap as the locals took both
ends of a doubleheader in Walkerton
Sunday afternoon by 4-2 and 11-1
scores.
The Express played last Tuesday
in Seaforth and bombed' the home
team by a 24-5 score.
In the first game of the twin bill
Sunday, Walkerton took a1-0 lead
in the first without the benefit of a
hit. The first batter reached on an
error and moved around by a another
Exeter error and fielder's choice play
focally scored on a sacrifice fly.
The lead was short-lived however
because, the Express took the lead.

for good with a pair of runs in the
top of the second. Peter Heeney led
off with a walk, George McEwan
singled, :.ad finally scored on a sin-
gle by D; ie Parsons.
The locals added another run in
the fifth inning. Kevin Hern walked
went to second on a ground out and
scored on a two -base error off the
bat of Heeney.
They picked up another insurance
run in the seventh inning. Shaw led
off with a walk, went to second on
a fly out to right field and scored on
a single by Dave Atthill.
Walkerton -got their final run in
their half of the seventh, when the
leadoff hitter tripled and scored on a
ground out to second base.
Shaw pitched the entire game and
allowed just the two hits in picking
up his second win of the season,
striking out 10 and walked only
one.
The Express finally got their bats
going in the second game. They
scored thice times in the first in-
ning on pst one hit, once in the
second wi.hout the benefit of a hit,
five times in the third on four hits
and twice in the fourth on three
hits. Every Exeter starter scored at
least one run, while every player
reached safely at least once in the
game. The game was called after
five innings of play.
Steve Merner had a walk and a
singled and scored once, Rob Dick-
ey had a pair of walks and scored
once, Shaw reached safely on an er-
ror and scored once, Walt Parkin-
son had three singles and scored
once, Barry Baynham walked and
singled and scored once, while his
replacement George McEwan was
safe on a fielder's choice and scored,
catcher Darcy Martin was safe on a
fielder's choice. and an error and
scored once, Kevin Hern singled and
scored, as did Parsons, Doug Schade
walked and scored, Heeney singled
but did not score and Atthill singled
and scored.
Starting pitcher Paul Elston held
Walkerton to just three hits in pick-
ing up the win. Elston struck out
six in just five innings of work and
didn't walk anybody.
Last Tuesday, the Express had
thing; going their way against Sea -
forth. They scored a season -high 24
runs in just five innings on 23 hits.
Schade was the offensive leader in
the game. He belted a second inning
lead-off homer, hit two singles,
walked and scored a run. Designated
hitter Doug Fairburn walked twice
and singled and scored three times.
Darcy Hayter scored four times on
two walks and two singles, while
Dickey scored three times on a
homer, single and was hit by a
pitch.
Exeter pitcher Dave Atthill gave
up five runs on nine hits,•struck out
two and walked only one.
The Express played in Exeter
against Lakeside yesterday, Tuesday,
and travel to Strathroy for a 6:30
p.m. game tonight, before coming
home Sunday afternoon to play a
doubleheader against Seaforth.
Game time Sunday is 12:30 p.m.

League record to 8-5 last week as
they split a pair of games.
Last Wednesday night they visit-
ed Mitchell for their second meet -
of the year with the defending

winning 5-4 and returned to league
play Wednesday night and beat Sea -
forth 10-3.

Fred Gregus hpd a pair of hits for
Exeter. Scot Russell had two walks
and scored twice, while Ross Keller
had a walk and single and scored
once.
Scott Miller made his pitching
debut in this game after a two-year
absence from the team. He pitched
six innings, giving up only two
hits in the exhibition game. How-
ever, Scot Russell picked up the
Exeter had better luck against
Seaforth Wednesday night. They
scored once iii -the first, once in the
third, four in the fourth, two in the
fifth and two in the seventh.

Grand Bend beats Fullarton twice
Fullarton twice last week and won
both times.
• They played July 4 in Fullarton
with Grand Bend coming out on top
of a 11-10 score and the scene shift-
ed to Grand Bend last Monday night
with the locals winning another
close contest 16-15.
Fullarton' s Steve Flynn's single
in the last half of the last inning,
combined with head -up base run-
ning, moved himself to third and
Steve C..nlop singled to score
Flynn to -nake it an 11-10 game.
But that threat was snuffed out

tagged Dunlop in an attempted steal
of home that would have tied the
game, instead it ended the game.
Andrew Sharen had three walks
for Grand Bend. With his alert base
running he managed to tie the game
in the second -last inning.
Woodley waited out a basc on
balls in Grand Bend's last inning
and Mark Boucher's single scored
Woodley for the game -winning run.
Woodley was also the winning
pitcher in the game.
Last Monday night, Chris Stan -
lake blasted a three -run homer in
the second inning and Grand Bend
held on for the 16-15 win.
Stanlaka went two -for -two on the
night, while Jeremy Wilde backed
up his strong pitching performance
with two doubles and two rbi's in
three trips to the. plate.
Wilde ,closed the game strong
pitchhig to only 10 batters in the
fifth, sixth and seventh innings, in
pickingup the win. He allowed
only fve hits in the game, while
walking only one and struck out
five.

On Thursday, a tired Royals'
squad, who were playing their sev-
enth game in six days, dropped a 5-
2 decision to North Division Mill-

A five run uprising in the seventh
inning, keyed by two bases -loaded
walks and a two RBI single by Jim
Allison, erased 13 - 1 Mitchell lead
and led the way to a 6-3 victory.
As he has so often this year, lead-
off hititr Pete Tuckey led the way
offensively as he reached base five
times on an error, two walks and
two singles. Tuckey's season bat-
ting average is close to .500 and he
has reached basc at a better than
.600 clip.
Al Pym contributed two singles
and scored a run. Tom Tordoff dou-
bled and scored while third baseman
Rod Johnson singled, scored a run
and had two RBI's.
Gres Wise pitched for the Royals
and picked up the couple to game
victory. He allowed nine hits,

Heywood allowed 10 hits over the
nine innings, struck out 14 and
walked two. He struck out the side

tripled and drove• in a run. Pete
Tuckey added two singles in four
trips as did Greg Wise. Brent Daw-
son tripled and scored a run..
This week, Royals visited Fullar-
ton A's Monday night and met St.
Marys Selects Tuesday night in
Kirkton. They play host to Mitch-
ell Gladiators on Thursday at 9:00
