Blyth Festival comedy insubstantial fare
By Yvonne Reynolds
BLYTH - Something is not right
with The Right One, a comedy that
opened .at the Blyth Festival on
July 5.
The skilled cast works feverishly
to tell the story of a small-town
wedding on the BC coast where
everything that could go wrong
does. They are defeated by the
marshmallowy script and a clut-
tered set.
The play's awkward structure
blurs present and past. The signifi-
cance of the opening soliloquies
does not become apparent until the
end. And a grating expletive in the
second half that is as out of place
as an onion in a bridal bouquet
could be deleted and never missed.
The audience will enjoy the
"early Beatles" songs bridging the
scenes.- Past board president Mari-
an Doucette begged and borrowed
from friends' record collections to
obtain this music.
The acting is superb. Laurel
Paetz is back at Blyth with another
stellar performance as the bride
who does not make it to the church
on time. A series of misfortunes
culminates in being trapped in her
bedroom by an old boyfriend.
The groom, played equally well
by Robert McClure (spending his
first summer at Blyth) is faring no
better. Last-minute doubts are in-
tensified by the bungling of a best
man who partied not wisely but
too well the night before.
Carol Sinclair (last year's Cela
Sloman in Fires in the Night)
steals every scene she's in as Bir-
die, the little white -gloved lady in
every town who has the solution
no matter what the crisis.
Kerry Dorey as best man Carl is
another newcomer to Blyth. He
Pedlar - Volland
Lisa Marie Volland and Robert
Scott Pedlar of Hensall were
united, in marriage on Saturday,
May 27, 1989 at Our Lady of
Mount Carmel Church in
Mount Carmel, by Father Peter
Hayes. The bride is the daugh-
ter of Keith and Dorothy Vol -
land of Hensall, and the groom
is the son of Mrs. Zola Pedlar,
Sarnia and the late William Ped-
lar. Maid of honour was Col-
leen Bedard, friend of the bride
and bridesmaids were Karen
Shanks, sister of the bride, Lori
Volland, cousin of the bride,
Sue Young, sister of the groom
and Pat McLean, sister of the
groom. Best man was Dan
Shaw, friend of the groom,
Doug Volland, brother of the
bride, Jerry Shaw, friend of the
groom, John Young, brother-in-
law of the groom and Pete
McLean, brother-in-law of the
groom. Flowergirls were Nicole
Young, a niece of the groom
and Leanne Shanks, a niece of
the bride. 'The ring bearer was
Thomas Pedlar, a nephew of
the groom. The reception was
held at the Hensall Community
Centre and the Pedlars now re-
side on Richmond Street in
Hensall.
Photograph by Bart DeVries
gives his role all he's got, but how
funny in today's social climate are
the antics of someone who has had
too much to drink.
Denise Kennedy is totally be-
lieveable - and likeable - as the
bride's sister.
Paetz' real-life husband Peter
Smith as the good of boy ex-
boyfriend, and Robert Clinton as
the groom's take -charge brother
round out the cast.
Most performances for The Right
One were sold out in advance. Pa-
trons counting on Blyth's well-
earned reputation for excellence
may feel let down. Instead of the
solid richness of a wedding cake,
this play is mostly fluffy icing..
"The Right One" was commis-
sioned by the Blyth Festival after
first being produced in 1986 as a
30 -minute radio play produced for
the Vanishing Point series.
Graduate - Joy Christie, daugh-
ter of Marlyn and Bill Christie
of Huron Park, graduated on
June 16, 1989, with her diplo-
ma in Nursing from Fanshawe
College to complement her de-
gree in Human Nutrition
(BASC). Congratulations from
your family.
