125 fairs
marked
by Zurich
Ag Society
ZURICH - The Zurich Agricultu-
ral Society held a special dinner Sat-
urday evening in recognition of the
Zurich Fair's 125th anniversary to '
be celebrated this month. MPP and
minister of agriculture Jack Riddell
-attended the dinner at the Zurich
Community Centre to give his best
wishes and to present a certificate
on behalf of the Ontario govern-
ment.
• District Eight president Ken Sher-
ar. was also present at the banquet
and told the audience that with three
to four percent of the Canadian pop-
ulationinvolved in agriculture today
he wondered what the percentage
was when the Zurich Fair be ' an.
Double trouble The McQuaid
sisters from the Seaforth area
entertained the audience at -the
125th anniversary dinner of the
Zurich Fair Saturday. Perhaps
their most outrageous act was
this attempt at playing each
others fiddles.
After the usual banter and enter-
tainment of such banquets, Society
secretary -treasurer Marg Deichert
presented some of the highlights of
the Fair's past years.
Riddell told the audience he had
checked with Patti Starr before at-
tending the Zurich event, but quick
--
1y became more serious when he
pointed out that Agricultural Socie-
ties were often the first organiza-
tions set up in a rural Ontario com-
munity, along with a temperance
society. -
Riddell noted that with the Zurich
Fair's beginnings in 1864, the event
was older than. Confederation and
even older than the ministry of agri-
culture, set up in Ontario in 1888.
Today agriculture is Ontario's
number two industry behind the
auto manufacturing sector. and it
contributes $1.6 billion toward the
province's economy, Riddell ex-
plained.
Fair plans
The Zurich Agricultural Society
is encouraging businesses and resi-
dents of the area to enter floats in
this year's Fair parade with a special
invitation going to owners of an-
tique cars. The emphasis will be on
celebrating the 125 -year theme
Children can enter by decorating
bicycles, tricycles, .wagons and
whatever else can constitute a float.
Those entering can register with
John Consist at the Hay Township
Fire Insurance office at 236-4381
before Friday July 21.
