Lawn bowling results
EXETER - The annual Ellison
Travel lawn bowling tournament
went over, once again, with great
success at the Exeter Lawn Bowl-
ing Club on Sunday. Rinks from
Fairmont, Thistle, Chatham, Luck=
now, Elmwood, Exeter, St. Marys,
Clinton, Mitchell, Seaforth and
Sarnia participated in the tourna-
ment.
Taking top honours was Lou
Cundari of St. Marys, Wes Watson
of Thistle, Brad Fleming of Fair-
mont and Bob Hart from Fairmont.
Taking the consolation was Jack
Treleaven hum Lucku v.
Many local bowlers also came
out during tne week. In Tuesday's
jitney, Marshall Dearing had two
wins for a total of 30 points, Bill
Rogerson totalled 29, Audrey
MacGregor had 25, Shawn McFalls
totalled 20 and Betty Convy had ,
17.
On Thursday, Sam Bower took
two wins for a total of 28, Trevor
Truemner had 26 and Bill Rogerson
had20.
Saturday's top bowlers were
Ruth Newman with two wins for a
total of 30, Walter Spencer, Stew-
art Miner and Audrey Mac Gregor

TARA - A short-handed Exeter
Royals team travelled to

played to take the consolation
championship.

their first game of the tournament
when they met up with a hot pitch-
er from the Bluewater Steamatics,
Trever Wardell, and failed to record
a hit off him.
Steve Johns was the only Royal
to reach base.
Bluewater, meanwhile, scored
the -eventual winning run in the
second inning on a one out triple
and a sacrifice fly. They added two
more runs in the next inning when
the lead-off batter reached base on
an error and was then brought
home by a homerun. The Steamat-

ning vi another run to defeat the
locals 4-0.
Grcg Wise took the loss, giving
up eight hits, walking one and

Luckily, the Royals got the bats
going in their second game and eas-
ily defeated Guelph 11-3.

Pitcher, Dan Heywood, took the

Immediately following the
team's final out in the Guelph
game, the Royals met Chesley los-
ing 7-2 to drop the locals to the
consolation side of the playoffs.
Fatigue and great pitching by the
Chesley pitcher, Gary Swartz, gave
Exeter little hope of gaining a vic-
tory.
Exeter managed only five hits off
Swartz.
Chesley took a run in the first
inning, two in the second and man-
aged four in the sixth.
In the consolation semi-final, the

The Royals called on Wise for
the third time in the tournament to
turn in an outstanding pitching per-
formance and to score the locals

Express win tournament
LONDON - After a two week
wait, the Exeter Express played the
final game of the Walkerton Tour-
nament, defeating Lakeside 9-8 in
Walkerton on Saturday at Labatt
Park in London. "
The tournament originally began
the 23 and 24 of June, but because
of a delay in the schedule, the tour-
nament had to be wrapped up on
Saturday in London at the mutually
agreed up on neutral diamond.
The locals picked up three runs
in the third inning, a single in the
fourth and two in the fifth, seventh
and eighth.
Lakeside opened scoring with a
single in the first inning, added two
in the third, singles in the fourth
and fifth, picked up two in the sev.
enth and one more in the eighth.
Dave $haw led the Express at the
plate, going four for five including
four singles and scoring four runs.
Paul Gilmour chipped in two sin-
gles and a double Greg Hem was
one for two and,brought in one run.
Kevin Drager was the starting
pitcher for Exeter and he went four
-and two-thirds innings and was fol-
lowed by Gilmour and Elston who
got the win pitching the final two-
thirds of an inning.
Last Tuesday, the Express defeat-
ed Strathroy 4-3 in a regular season
league game at home and also
turned the trick again in Strathroy
5-4.
Thesday nights contest had to go
extra inning before a verdict was de-
cided.
The Express picked up a single
run in their half of the tenth inning
to take the game when Dave Shaw
belted a home run. Previously they
had scored single runs in the second,
fifth and sixth innings.
The locals had a total of six hits
in the game, including Shaw's hom-
er and two doubles by Rob Dickey
and Doul; Fairbairn and singles to
Ironwood holds scramble
EXETER - Ironwood golf course
held the Miller Lite Scramble golf
tournament on Saturday. Partici-
pants included members of Iron-
- wood's men's and ladies' clubs and
junior golfers. Two four member
teams will now advance to the re-
gional playoffs in New Dundee.
Low score of the day was a 12
under par 58, posted by the team of
Dave Holtzmann, Larry Johns,
Brian Taylor and Ken Pinder.
Also qualifying for the regionals
was the team of Stu Homuth,
Wayne Burke, Don Currcll and Jim
Russell who shot a score of 59,
11 under par.
The low mixed team was Bonnie
and.Earl Ross, Wilmer Ferguson
and Orville Wripn who scored a
66.
The two Exeter teams will be
competing for the Miller Lite
Scramble Championship at Glen
Abbey on September 20.
Pee Wee boys team
defend tournament title
STRATHROY - The Exeter Pee
Wee boys' soccer team defended
their title last week in the Strath-
roy Turkeyfest • tournament. De-
spite a disappointing loss in their
first game of round robin play, the
tZm came back to win their next
two games and take the tourna-
ment.
Against the hosts of the•tourna-
t,-the- loeals—played-extremely
well in a closely matched game.
Neither team enjoyed more than a
one goal lead throughout the game
until the last minute when Strath-
roy took a 5-3 victory.

er team. Exeter had no difficulty
defeating its opponents 6-0.
This win put Exeter in second
place following round robin play.
Thus, the team came up against the
first place team, Strathroy, for the
second time in the tournament for
the championship game.
In this game, the Exeter boys
played up to their regular season
potential led by midfielders Dan
Martens and Sivichay Sengkhoun-
many.
The -locals -took -an -early lead-off
of a penalty shot and controlled the
remainder of the game to take the
championship game 3-1 over
S trathroy.
Goal scorers for the tournament
were, Scngkhounmany with five,
Eugene Boersma and Marty De-
o Bruyn with two while Souban In-
_ lakhana, Jaime Dougall and Den-
nisWelsh each picked up a single.
The PecWee team remains unde-
feated in regular season play.
Fairbairn, Dickey and Darcy Martin.
Dave Atthill was the starter again
for Exeter but Doug Schade finished
up and got the win in relief.
Wednesday night's contest was
also decided by one run. They
scored early in this game, picking
up two runs in the second and third
innings and a single run in the
four►'i.
In this game, the offensive hero
was Dave Parsons who connected
for three singles and scoicd three
'times.
Shaw had a single and a double
and scored a run and Steve Merner
had a single and a double as well.
The Express used four pitchers in
this game. All taking to the hill
were Gilmour, Barry Bayhnam,
Mike Neil and Shaw.
The Express played in Seaforth
yesterday, Tuesday,, and play a dou-
bleheader in Walkerton starting at
12:30.
