GRAND BEND - The sounds of
singing and toe tapping have been
added to the hustle and bustle
around Huron Country Playhouse,.
as the cast of the Playhouse Il pro-
duction The Vaudevillians begin re-
hearsals.
The Vaudevillians is a delightful
look at "the good old days" of live
on stage bufooncry, sight gags,
shtick, song, and plenty of that old
soft shoe. The only vaudeville
standard that has been left out of
this production is the live animal
acts.
Director Pat Dawson hasn't seen
any dancing bears good enough for
this enchanting and hilarious review
of entertainment history, from the
day. of the minstrel show to the
crazy days of the world famous

actors A. Frank Ruffo and James

show as a .team before, so the Play-

smoothly.
Director, Pat Dawson is no

Huron's example commended
Response to child abuse excellent
GODERICH - Members of the
Legislative Assembly of.Ontario
were told Huron County's Coordi-
nated response to child abuse "was
an excellent example of community
efforts to try to help with the prob-
lem of child abuse: during the re-
cent Throne Speech debate.
The Hop. Cindy Nicholas, MPP
(Scarborough -Centre) spoke -at
length on the work of the Huron
County Community Child Abuse
Coordinating Committee following
her attendance as guest speaker at
the committee's Teddy Bear Dream
Auction and Raffle on May 13.
• The following is an excerpt. from
the Hansard Official Report of De-
bates:
"I had the opportunity this past
'weekend to attend an.event put on
by the Huron County Community
Child Abuse Coordinating Com-
mittee. They had a Teddy Bear
Dream Auction and Raffle. It was
to raise money for their
group...Here was an excellent' ex-
ample of community. efforts to try
to help with the problem of child.
abuse that is going on in many
homes across Ontario.
"The unique thing this committee
does is that it has puppet presenta-
tions that go -to schools and taik
about child abuse. Apparently, right
after some of these puppet presenta-
tions, the children then disclose that
they'have been abused by their par-
ents. They tell these puppets more
than they would ipll adults, because
they are intimidated to tell adults,
so it has been a very.effective pro-
gram.
"They provide information about
positive parenting to parents and
they try to increase the level of ex-
pertise and co-Qrdination of the lo-
cal people in' dealing with child
abuse, diagnose it and be of some
assistance in preventing it.
"I think our. knowledge of child
abuse has changed dramatically.over
the last few decades. I think many
people felt that if you had a soci-
oeconomic case as to whether you
were a child abuser or not, it could
not happen in rich Wines, it could
only •happen in poor families. Now
we realize that child abuse can occur
at all levels of socioeconomic pros-
perity and I think that is an impor-
tant first step we did.
"The second is that it is opt of
the closet. We recognize it does oc-
cur. It is in the open. We see it in
'our newspapers and on television,
and that was something that did not
happen even a decade ago. I think
sometimes . acknowledging that
there is a problem is a big first step
forward in trying to prevent future.
abuse.
"The statistics we are hearing are
very grim. In some one in every

five Canadian homes, a child.is be-
ing beaten, slapped, scalded, kicked,
sexually abused or neglected. I
think we will all agree that this is a
tragedy, that we have to break this
cycle of violence, that we have to
deal with it, that we have to reha-
bilitate abusers so that abusers do
not continue to abuse. More impor-
tant, it has been suggested that we
stop this cycle of violence that is
occurring in families and that we
provide the necessary programs to
prevent it.
"I think the example of the Huron
County Child Abuse Coordinating
Committee is an excellent one of
how volunteers and the community
at large can assist in trying to pre-
vent child abuse."
A 23 -member multidisciplinary
committee, the Huron County
Community Child Abuse Coordt-
nating Committee coordinates the
professional and community re-
sponse to child abuse. It provides
educational workshops to service
providers and raises public aware-
ness about child abuse and parent=
ing issues. Its projects include the

Natural Gas Costs Less Now
Than It Did When Julie Was Born.
The Value Grows And Grows.
It's a fact, natural gas prices are lower now
than they were in 1983 when Julie was born.
That's something Julie's parents may not be
aware of. When you consider that most goods
. and services haverisen on average by 28%
during the same time, we believe it's a pretty
good record.
