Sports Spotlight
by Wayne Proctor
The more than 500 fans that ventured down to Toronto with Elli-
son Travel for the annual Huron County Day not only got treated to
a game between rivals the Toronto Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers,
they were treated to the first day game ever in the new SkyDome,
and I was fortunate enough to be along for the trip.
I probably would have gbne anyway if it had been played at Exhi-
bition Stadium because I am a Tiger fan, but a chance to see the
new SkyDome intrigued me even more.
For 12 years the Blue Jays had to endure 12 years of people insult-
ing Exhibition Stadium. The "Mistake by the Lake" or "Exorcism
Stadium" were the two used most often by the cruel media. I actual-
ly didn't mind seeing a game there but I was anxious to see the new
dome.
I saw the official opening on television last Saturday and I must
say I wasn't very impressed. The announcer told the crowd they wer-
en't going to open the roof because of a lightning storm outside.
Sure enough about 20 minutes later the roof came open and the
rains came in. I couldn't figure the point of having a roof if they are
going to open it when it is raining. The rain caused nothing but
problems and disgraced some performers. Some were falling and
slipping into puddles some causing some injuries and most had their
costumes ruined by the rain.
Putting that aside I, went to the dome Saturday with an open
mind. The best thing the dome has going for it I think is its loca-
tion. It is located right at the base of the C N Tower in downtown
Toronto, right off the Gardner Expressway so it is easily accessible.
The best way to get there is to go by bus or some form of transit.
Parking, if you can find any will cost you plenty, $12-S15 in most
cases in fact.
The building looked like it might be a hockey arena from the out-
side, because the roof was on when we arrived. But almost immedi-
ately they did what most had wanted to see, peeling the roof back
into its normal place.
The outside -of the building also shows its premature age. Walk-
ways and skirting workoutside the building were still in place Sat-
urday. Some major lights at the entrance level have yet to be in-
stalled and some advertising signs in the concourse area are not yet -
in place. It will take some time to complete the entire structure. So
I guess if you don't mind dirt piles lying around, it's all right.
Once inside the building then it starts looking like the S500 mil-
lion structure it is. We had to climb to the top of the fifth level up
some ramps, the highest in the stadium to get to our seats. In the
top level it is very easy to see the how fast the roof is being taken
away or moved into place. At the bottom or near field level it is no-
ticeable that the roof is moving but harder to tell just how fast.
McDonald's has the concession rights to the stadium and I think
they must have the price 53.25 stuck on their computer. It costs
that much for a deluxe "McDog", a Big Mac and a package of Na-
chos with precious few inside.
Souvenirs are not cheap ei. `. They ' int 52 for a lousy Sky -
Dome button and $1.50 for a , iper strc, -r. Their best sweatshirt
can set you back S45 as well.
If you can get to the top without getting a nosebleed, the view is
actually not bad. It should be for the $12 they charged for the tickets
in our area. _
I heard one little boy tell his father that the players on the field
loeked like ants, something often heard on airplanes, which might
give you some idea how high you actually are.
Walking completely around in the concourse area could take a
while as well:
I think the players will take some time -to adjust to the new dome.
Most seemed to have trouble with fly balls in the swirling winds in
Saturday's game.
But it really is a magnificent structure. Not only doesn't it have
the first roof that that be moved into place, but it also has the
world's largest scoreboard, a 150 -seat movie theatre, health club, bar
and a $1,000 a night hotel suite. Not everything is finished yet, but
once it is it could be called a Wonder of the World.
Owners of the new stadium predict a life span of two to three cen-
turies.
Maybe when the time comes for a new Sky Dome, the Blue Jays
might have two or three World Series championships under their
belt.

Exeter - Wallacetown
The two unbeaten teams met for
the first time this season and it
turned into a real battle. Both teams
were evenly matched. Wallacetown
took the lead early in the game but
Peter McAllister tied it before half

kick by Chris Eccles.
In the second half Wallacctown
took the lead again but with seven
