Riverview WI hears about sheep
AI LSA CRAIG - The Riverview
W.I. vacated their usual meeting
place for a more exotic one -- the
home of Pat and Bill Rowley. As
president Leona Hughes was unable
to be present, past president Evelyn
McNaughton opened the meeting
with some household hints and con-
ducted the business. Five guests
were welcomed, so Pat literally had
a full house! •
Plans were made to enter an ex-
hibit for Western Fair. A donation
was made toward the Gala Days pa-
rade, and in this connection a com-
mittee was named to enter the W.I.
float again with a new theme a few
seats arc left for the July 25 bus
trip to Aylmer and St. Thomas. Af-
ter some discussion re supporting
two East Williams school students
for the Quebec exchange, it was de-
cided that we would do this on an
individual basis. The president con-
veyed greetings from the Institute
in England with ,whom we corre-
spond, as one of their members was
in Ontario and called our contact
person, Margaret Wilson.
Mrs. Sadie Walker was in charge
of the program for the Agriculture
and Canadian Industries committee.
The roll call was answered by tell-
ing "Why I like sheep", and some
very interesting answers were giv-

time, "What is so rare as a day in
June!", and Olive Currie had two
very interesting ones -on "The
Pussy Willow", and "I like House-
cleaning".
We were then entertained by Pat
as she told of their former sheep in-
dustry, and showed us all the neat
things they made themselves --
even to tanning the skins, weaving
shawls, and many polishers and
dusters. We could have used the last
one especially! Pat was thanked by
Martha Rees and given an armful of
freshly -baked goodies for her and
her familyto enjoy, so they can
spend more time in the gardens
which we toured after the meeting,
with many reminders of the loving
care given them by Margaret Craw-
ford. •
Reports were given by the two
delegates who attended the District
Annual in Poplar Hill in May; Jean
McKichan read Leona's and Evelyn
gave her own. Both thanked the
W.I. for the privilege of represent-
ing the members. A letter of thanks
was read from the Library Board for
the donation we sent them.
Ruth McCallum extended thanks
to Evelyn for typing the program
for the 1989-90 year and having
them printed on the attractive yel-
low paper, with the blue and gold
crest. _
The acting president gave the
courtesies, and thanked Pat . for
Speaker says handicapped
have right to go to school
By Roberta Walker
EXETER - The South Huron
District Association for the Mental-
ly Handicapped held its 21st annual
meeting on Thursday, June 8 at the
Exeter Community Centre. Associ-
ation President Richard Hucal wel-
comed all members and friends to
the banquet and meeting.
Rev. Rick Hawley called for a
moment of silence for recognition
of recently deceased Board members
Jim Dalton and Charles Smith. The
Bethel Reformed Church women ca-
tered a delicious roast beef dinner.
Guest organist George Jenner pro-
vided music during the meal.
President Richard Hucal presided
the business meeting. After approv-
al of committee reports and Board
actions, Flowers of Hope chairman
Harry Klunge? reported that nearly
$20,000 have been Collected so far
in the 1989 fund raising campaign.
The goal for 1989 is $21,000, so
collections are far ahead of the to-
tals last year at this time. It prom-
ises to be one of the most success-
ful campaigns ever.
The new board of directors was
installed by Rev. Rick Hawley:
Donna Greb, Ralph Topp, Ila
Mathers, Pat Campbell, Richard
Hucal, Rev. Henry Van Essen, Su-
san Fussell, Roberta Walker, Gail
Little; Ron Walker, and Harry
Klungel.
Gail Little presented retiring
board member Victor Knip with a
gift in appreciation for his seven
years service, including past -
president 86-88, and wished him
well for the future.
Executive Director John Gray in-
troduced the guest speaker Jim Han-
sen, Superintendent of the Roman
Catholic Separate School Board in
Hamilton. Hansen has spoken all
over the world about complete inte-
opening her historic home, and her
special surprise of the black lace
dress from the turn of the century
- a real masterpiece. After the good
cake and ice cream served by Ger-
trude Rosser and her committee
present - Wilma and Mary -- on
Pat's expensively antique china, we
were free to wander inside and out.
Thanks to Sadie and her committee
-for arranging this meeting on such
a beautiful spring day. •
The next meeting will be our
potluck family supper on August 1
in the Masonic Hall at 7:0.0 p.m.,
but in the meantime we will be -
presenting the entertainment at the
Rally in Poplar Hill on July 18,
for which a committee has been
formed, and going to St. Thomas
on July 25. You sce, we Institute
members never have a dull mo-
ment -- why don't you join us!

gratiori of handicapped children into
the school system, and the success
he has experienced in the Hamilton
school system. He was named Edu-
cator of the Year by the Council for
Exceptional Children in 1986.
Hansen has a philosophy of edu-
canon that embraces all children, re-
gardless of ability or need. He be-
lieves that all children have the
right to go to their local communi-
ty school, with their brothers and
sisters, the right to be recognized as
indi victuals.
The job of school is to foster
growth by meeting certain needs: to
belong, to be accepted (affirmed), to
have success, to be challenged to
excellence, to offer service. reflect-
ing the need to be wanted and to
help others and to be loved and have
your dignity preserved. If these
needs are met, then the child will
grow, regardless of ability (or disa-
bility) _
Hansen also talked about obsta-
cles to success, such as labels, seg-
regation, ineffective teachers who
are afraid to take risks, prejudice and
fear. Two of the biggest excuses to
avoid or limit integration are mon-
ey and space. In fact, segregated
spaces and buildings always cost
more, and space can always be made
for a few children at one local
school provided proper support is
given to the teacher.
Teachers get a special gift from
teaching special children, the gift of
joy, and learning flourishes in joy.
If you can change the environment,'
you can change the child, so they
can grow up with their peers, have
real friends, and even learn to read
and write.
Most important of all, they'll be
part of their community, not stand-
ing outside looking in and that is
the goal of integration.
