Times Advocate, 1989-06-07, Page 37CONSTRUCTION Parker baby dedicated at joint service By Joan Beierling VARNA - Carol Steckle of Steckle's Garden and Green House Centre showed beautiful pictures of landscapes, flower beds and borders at the June 1 meeting of Varna U.C.W. 'there were 14 members present. Deb Rathwell presided. Thank you notes were received from Huron Happy Hearts Round Dance Club, the Parker family, Survival Through Friendship House, Dr. Graham Homes and Sylvia Wilson. The Goshen Women have invited our members to their meeting on June 15 to hear Laura Harper speak. Campsite experience is at Menes- etung on Monday, June 12. Bev Robinson is the speaker. Alma Col- lege One -Day School for Women is on August 12. A large amount of clothing has been donate;'rfor the bale. David Rathwell has been hired to cut the grass at the church this summer. Appreciation was expressed to the Reids who supplied the topsoil and to Bob and June Webster who chose and planted the lovely shrubs around the front of the church. Three shrubs were also purchased for the manse. Eleanor McAsh and Carol Sim- ons planned the program and wor- ship on the theme "The Garden of Our Lives". The hymn "For the Beauty of the Earth" was sung. Car- ol read the scripture. Eleanor's medi- tation suggested a flower bed plan for living. The background was the flower of Jesus Christ. Added were . the Flowers of Service and the Granton by Muriel Lewis GRANTON - Several ladies from Granton enjoyed the Kirkton Horti- cultural Society's bus trip on Mon- day, May 29 to the Moore Water Lily Gardens at Port Stanley and had lunch on the river boat cruise. In the afternoon, the group. travelled on to Aylmer for a demonstration and supper at Pinecraft Potteries. Rev. Bruce Pierce officiated at the Jones -Riddell wedding on Saturday, June 3 at the Granton United Church. A reception and dance fol- lowed at the community centre in Kirkton. Member of the Granton Lion's Club and friends hada bus trip on Sunday to the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Sympathy from the Granton Community is extended of the fam- ily of Lloyd Oakley .who passed away on Sunday morning following a lengthy illness. At Granton United Church on Sunday, June 4, Rev. Wes Oake was the guest minister for the An- niversary service. His message was about the Crisis in the Church. The lessons were from Hosea 10 and Matthew 11. Veronica and Tif- fany Blom were the bulletin ste- wards. Special music was provided by the choir in an anthem "let the Whole World Know". Receiving Sunday School Awards were Katie and Bronwyn Hazel- wood, Jinine Hart, Jenny Blake, Susan Bryan and Angie Wallis. Flowers in the sanctuary were from the Jones -Riddell wedding. A time of fellowship followed the service. There was no service at the St. , Thomas' Anglican Church on Sun- day, June 4 but several from the congregation attended the anniver- sary service at St. Paul's Church, Kirkton. Rev. Beverley Wheeler celebrated Eucharist and spoke about loving God with heart, soul and mind, being thankful for what has been and accepting what shall be. Flowers of Purity. A colourful platter of fruits was en, joyed during the social hour. Sunday, June 4 there was a joint service at Goshen at 11 a.m. The church was full. The Goshen Choir entertained everyone with a medley. Children's song "Rejoice in the Lord" was sung. Then came the special part of the service. Rev. Mac Parker from Alberta, twin brother of Rev. Sam Parker, came forward to administer the infant dedication. Elmer Hayter, Clerk of the ses- sion, presented Rev. Mac Parker with Rachel Ann Parker, daughter of Sam and Barbara Ann, for dedica- tion. Following the introduction Miss Sheena Larson, niece of the Parker brothers, sang a solo. Following the dedication, Barbara Ann Parker sang a solo "Find Us•Faithful". Anson McKinley and Margie El- liot presented the couple with sym- bolic floral gifts on behalf of the la- dies and men of the congregation._ Sam and. Barbara Ann have guests, Sam's twin brother Mac, his wife Lorraine and son David vi- siting for a couple of days. David is just'31 hours younger than Rachel Ann. The Varna Youth Group enjoyed bowling last Wednesday evening in Clinton and will meet Wednesday, June 7 at the church. Varna 4-H The Varna Landscaping 4-H Club held their second meeting at Sandra Turner's. Carol Steckle showed them some of- the houses she im- proved to satisfy the owner's needs. She also brought books with foun- A.C.W. The St. Thomas' A.C.W. group visited with Margery Morley on Thursday evening, June 1 at Kings - way Lodge in St. Marys. Readings -were given by Marlene French and Jean Noon. They theh returned to the home of Mrs. Percy Hodgins for their meeting. Co-ordinator Irene Roloson pre- sided and led a discussion pertaining to the last meeting and program. A contest was used to illustrate communications and the value of relaxation v‘,IS ,I, nlonstrated. The hostess served refreshments during the social time which fol- lowed the meeting. Unit one held their meeting with Mabel McNaughton at Craigholmc in Ailsa Craig on Thursday aftcr- noon, June 1. Another member Edythe Westman who resides at the Villa in Lucan also went with the group. President Doreen McRobcrt led the meeting and most of the mem- bers took part in the program with hymn singing, readings and poems, including a monologue by Madclinc Ilardic on Jonah and the whale. Miss McNarghton was presented with a corsage in honour of her 95th birthday on Junc 22. Amelia Jameson and Madclinc Hardie served lunch and Audrey Wcstman provided the birthday cake. The Varna Landscaping 4-H Club met at Huron Ridge Acres. Mr. Steckle named some of the shrubs and showed them how to prune them. He also showed them some fertilizer. They learned how to take care of shrubs and plants. Before leaving they all got a globe cedar to plant and take care of themselves. Playday A reminder of playday to be held this year in Varna and Bayfield. Registration is July 7 in the Varna Complex from 9-12 noon and in the Bayfield Municipal Building from 1-4 p.m. This program is for children ages 5-12. The Stanley Township Swim- ming Program runs from July 10- 14 and July 17-21. Bus picks up in Varna and Brucefield. You must• register by June 24. Price is 530 per child. It was very much appreciated! Senior track winner Congratulations to Michael Hay- ter on winning first over all for the Senior Boys Track and Field at the Huron Centennial School. He tied for first at the Regional Track and Field at Seaforth and goes on to WOSA in Port Elgin.
