Exeter Legion executive - The new 1989-90 executive of the R.E. Pooley Exeter Branch of the Roy- al Canadian Legion was installed recently. Zurich 4-H club ZURICH - On May 29, our meet- ing was held at Lakewood Nurseries at St. Joseph's. Mike Miller and, his wife Dianne graciously set aside their other business to entertain an educate us about trees and shrubs. In the short tour Mike gave, he taught us how to clip; plant and fer- tilize the tree or shrub you choose to hest suite your gardens. Mike also showed us how to read the tags which accompany the plants, he told us to look for things like, how big the shrub will grow and the best suited location in which to plant it. It certainly was a very interesting time, which we will not forget and we thanked Mike and Dianne for their kindness. Leader Mary introduced our guide and host Mike Miller and welcomed moms and dads. Mike Miller told us there are two kinds of plants Annual and Perenni- al, he gave characteristics of ever- green shrubs, evergreen trees, decid- uous trees and -deciduous shrubs. He described round covers, mulch, fertilizer and containers. Mike planted a flowering almond. in his flower bed. He was then thanked. President Julie assigned members to read "What's in a Name" which also included putting plants in the category formal or informal, envi- ronment aspects, tips for choosing plants, how to use your nursery cat- alogue and nursery field trip. We did an activity Spot and Record, then went back and spotted and -recorded. Press reporter Rosemary Thompson Times -Advocate, June 7, 1989 Page 15 Kirkton WI dine at the Crosswinds KIRKTON - The Kirkton Wom- en's Institute held their May meet- ing with dinner at the Crosswinds Restaurant in Mitchell. Elaine Ste- phen and Ethel Copeland were in charge of the evening. After a love- ly dinner, President Evelyn Wiles opened the meeting after which the Secretary read the minutes and gave the Treasurers report. The District Annual was held on May 16 in Mitchell and Doris Spence and Joyce Strahan gave their reports. The theme "Preparing for the 1990's" cook books are for sale at $12 each; contact Doris Spence. Each person having office in the. Cromarty by Mrs. Robert Laing CROMARTY - Joy Scott opened the May meeting of the Marian Ri- chie_%'.M.S. by reading "A Leader's Conversation with God." "Lord, form Whose Hand" was sung with Ruth Laing at the piano. Grace Kerslake was in charge of the worship service based on Eccle- siastes 3:1-14. The roll call was answered by 10 members who told what they had brought for the plant sale and what they had made for the bazaar to be held the end of Octo- ber. Hazel Harburn presided for the business when Grace Kerslake read the names of those on the commit- tees for the bazaar.. A motion on abortion to be pre- sented to the government by Synod- ical was discussed. Lillian Douglas reviewed the study book on South Africa, also the two films, Mandela and The Women of South Africa. Following the closing hymn, 0 God of the Eternal Now, a sale of plants and baking was held. Institute received a congratulatory letter from M.P. Harry Brightwell. Recognition night is on June 8 at 7:15 p.m. at the Community Cen- tre for the 4-H Programme. Plans are being made for Huron County Playhouse. The date will be announced later. The Institute is purchasing a pic- nic table and plaque to be given to the Erland Lee Home at Stoney Creek. Secret Pals were revealed for 1988.89 and decided to again have them for 1989-90. The committee in charge had a lovely African Violet for everyone to take home. Members were reminded that on June 18 there is free admission to th Museum at Milton. The June meeting will be in charge of Education and Cultural Affairs and will be held at the Mu- seum in St. Marys at 7 p.m. on June 22, 1989. Dashwood by Bernice Boyle DASHWOOD - We hope you keep Saturday free for the Annual Community yard sale. Start your day at the firemen's breakfast from 8-11 a.m. in Jim Becker's shed near the west end of Dashwood. During the week the firemen will pick up donations of unwanted articles. Mr. and Mrs. Roman Meidinger, Exeter and Ken and Linda Genttner spent -the weekend in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Mrs. Nancy Becker is visiting for a couple of weeks with Van, Laurie and Luke Tuckey, Trenton. The community extends sympa- thy to Bob and Bonnie Becker in the loss of Bonnie's mother, Mrs. E.
