Two babies were welcomed into the family of Exeter United. Tris, ten Michelle, daughter of Terrence and Bonnie Caldwell, and Anthony Seibrand, son of Douwe and Jenny Wilts, became the youngest mem- bers of our church family. Con- gratulations to both children on this special event in their lives! Our church has been, the recipient of several gifts and memorial trib- utes in the past months. Oak doors for the back of the sanctuary were designed by Exeter Furniture to match the oak at the front of the church. The inserted stained glass windows were designed by Ada Din- ncy, to pick up the theme of the long exterior winds*' , a d were constructed by Edward' lass of London. Caffrey Cann presented the doors and windows which were dedicated to the Glory of God by the following families: Harvey and Dorothy Pfaff and their children Steven, Greg, and Janet; the Down Family - members past, present, and future: Jerry and Alice McLean and family; Walter and Margaret McBride and family; and Elmore and Ida McBride and family. Alma Godbolt presented new en- trance lights in honour of Reginald Knight, Jean Pooley, Verda Squire, and Margaret Wein. Renovations to the nursery have recently been completed due to the generosity of the Nursery's friend, Miss Anne Brodie. The "Anne Bro- die Nursery" was presented by Kar- en Snow, former Nursery Coordina- tor, and dedicated to the Glory of God and to honour future genera- tions. Warm thanks are extended from the congregation to all of these gen- erous donors. Mother's Day and Christian Fam- ily Sunday were also celebrated dur- ing the service. Special musical tributes were given by The Young Singers, The Youth of Note, and the Senior Choir. Sunday, May 14 marked the Day of Pentecost, or the descent of the Holy Spirit. The colour for Pente- cost, the birthday of the Church, is red and the symbols are fire, the dove, the blood of the martyrs, and the number seven for the sevenfold gifts of the spirit. To date, $18,611.78 has been raised for the elevating device pro- ject. This is approximately half of the church's portion needed for com- pletion of the project. Scheduled date for completion of construction is June 2. " The Gone Fishin' Gang will round out their year's activities by going bowling on Thursday, May IS at 9 p.m. and then going to a restaurant for supper. Exeter impresses fashion store owners EXETER - Gary and Brigitte Hartai are celebrating an anniver- sary this month. Their store, Bri- gitte's Fashions, opened on Main St. in mid-May of 1984. The venture was backed by years of experience. Gary has been in re- tail all his life, rising to vice- A.—president of a national chain before branching out as proprietor of a clothing and shot store in Listow- el, where the couple have lived for the past 12 years. Brigitte received her training through her native Ger- many's excellent apprentice sys- tem. The Hartais ran the Listowel store for seven years. They began looking for another location five years ago, after deciding not to re- new their lease because the build- ing was in bad shape, ,and they couldn't find another suitable site in the town. When asked why Exeter was cho- sen, Gary said the town has a good reputation throughout the retail clothing trade grapevine. The Har- tais came looking, liked what they saw, and decided to locate here. "We knew Exeter was in a good farming community, with a strong downtown core. That 3,800 popu- lation sign can fool you - a lot more shop here. You'd be sur- • prised. It's close to.the city, but certain people prefer the small- town atmosphere' Gary explained. The Hartais opened a ladies wear store in Hanover in the spring of 1985. Gary visits that store regu- larly, but "a very capable manager we were lucky enough to find" looks after the day to day opera- tion. The Exeter store was expanded in the fall of '85. Incorporating the former ice cream parlour next dodr almost doubled the capacity to the present 2,400 square feet. The Hartais arc still living in Listowel. They hope to eventually move to Exeter, as commuting from home tobusiness adds two hours of driving to each working day. Neither enjoys winter driving, but there have been only 10 days in the last five years that they couldn't make the trip to Exeter. Brigitte is at the Exeter store eve- ry day. Husband Gary spends two days "running around", as he does most of the buying. The Hartais have been first-hand observers of changes in the cloth - mg business. At one time, retailers did business through wholesalers and jobbers. Now they can attend five annual shows where they deal directly with the -manufacturers. Agents also come around to the stores with samples. "We don't buy in quantity, we buy a variety. In Exeter, each clothing retailer has a niche. We don't sell the same things. Cus- tomers don't want to sec the same outfit all over town", Gary 're- marked . Gary has already done his fall buying. Muted shades of purple and jadc will predominate. Both co- lours and styles are softly feminine RICHARD LOBB AUCTION CALENDAR Clinton 482-7898 WED., MAY 17 AT 6 P.M.: 1969 Chev Impala 2 door hardtop, run only 21,414 miles, excellent condition, modern furniture and appliances, antiques, excellent condiiton, at the Brussels Arena for the Estate of Noreen Eder.
