hardware for season
EXETER - The Exeter Junior
Hawks put an official end to
the1988-89 season with their annu-
al awards banquet .Friday night at
the Exeter Legion.
First-year player Derek Shackle-
ton and captain Mark Morrissey
were the big winners, each taking
home two major trophies.
Shackleton took the Big Guy's
Fries Trophy for winning the scor-
ing championship during the regu-
lar season, and was presented that
award by the owner of Big Guys
Fries Fries, Dave Urlin.
Shackleton also took home the
Silvere Bilcke Trophy as the Most
Valuable Player during the regular
season. Shackleton scored 25 goals
and picked up 28 assists for 53
points in 30 games during the sea-
son.
The Hawk Award, presented by
Ron Bogart of RSD Sports Den in
Exeter, and the Pfaff Electric Award
for team leadership, went to team
captain Morrissey. Morrissey scored
nine goals and 15 assists, for 24
points but the awards were in recog-
nition for his leadership on and off
the ice.
Goaltender Todd Campbell was
named winner of the Hensall Siding
Trophy as Most Valuable Player
during the playoffs. Campbell back-
stopped the Hawks to a seven -game
series win over the Thedford Lum-
berjacks and took the Lucan Irish to
seven games before falling in dou-
ble overtime in the rubber game.
Eugene Webber, of Hensall Siding
presented Campbell with the tro-
phy.
Taking the Most Valuable De-
fenceman honors and the Charter -
ways trophy that goes along with
it, was defenceman Jeff Ansems.
Ansems scored 14 goals and 30 as-
sists for 44 points during the regu-
lar season and was in a three-way
tie for second place in the team
scoring. Ken Ogden, of Charter-
ways, presented Ansems with his
trophy.
Doug Dalrymple, of Thames
Road Cabinets, presented the Most
Improved Player Award to rookie
Steve Dubarry. During the season,.
Dubarry, scored eight goals, had 10
assists for 18 points in just 34
games.
In a team full of rookies, Rookie -
of -the -Year honors and the North -
lander Industries Trophy were be-
stowed upon defenceman Larry Le-
wis. Lewis played all 36 games
during the season, scored three
goals and had 18 assists for 21
points.
Dan Nairn was given the Gary
Middleton Family Trophy as the
Most Gentlemanly Player during
the regular season. Naim had 20
goals and 24 assists during the reg-
ular season, but had less than 20
minutes in penalties.
The final major award went to
Jim Dickins. He was given the Lar-
ry Taylor Family Trophy was the
Best Defensive Forward. This sea-
son Dickins played in 32 games,
scored 19 goals and assisted 13
times.
The Hibachi Award as Executive
Rookie -of -the -Year, was given to
Sue Wilson.
Guest speaker for the night was
former National Hockey League
Linseman Will Norris. Norris is
now director of officials for the
Western Junior D Hockey League,
based in Cambridge.
Norris was on hand to recruit new
officials. Part of his speech was a

forming them if they wanted to stay
in contact with the sport after their
playing days are over a way to do
that is through officiating. He asked
players to seriously consider be-
coming officials.
In an effort to gain more officials,
Norris said a clinic will be held at
the University of Waterloo June 26,
in conjunction .with the 17 -and -
under branch camp.
He explained how he is responsi-
bl� for assigning 350 referees and
linemen to games all over southern
Ontario. He said one thing a referee
should have is a good head on his
shoulders.
Norris also informed the players
the league, in an effort to crack
down on paralyzing injuries next
year, will likely have one major
rule change next season. Referees
will be calling stricter penalties in
an effort to reduce injuries from
players checking others from behind
into the boards. Norris said it will
be looked at further by the Canadian
Amateur Hockey Association dur-
ing a conference May 18.
Norris also harked back to some
of the more memorable experiences
during his 18 years in the National
Hockey League. and shared some of
those memories with the audience.
The Hawks will be holding their
annual general meeting next
Wednesday, May 10 at 8 p.m. at
the South Huron Rec Centre, to
elect a new executive for next sea-
son. The team will also be holding
their second -annual fish fry July
21.

If any more games are ncccessary,
the fifth game will go Thursday at
8:30 at the Lucan Arena, with gamc
six scheduled for Saturday night at
the Lucan Arena and if it gots the
distance game seven will be played
Sunday night at Nichols Arena.

jans as they were thumped 5-0.
Coach, George McEwan, felt the
problem was that his team was
beaten to the ball too often and they
had few scoring chances.
The boys returned to regular sea-
son play Monday in Norwell and
will play host to Listowel today
(Wednesday) at 3:00.
