Times Advocate, 1989-05-03, Page 15Sign of the season? - The cool weather on Sunday didn't stop Steve and Judy Martin, from sunbath- ing and swimming at the Grand Bend beach Sunday. The pair said the water was cold and still "needs a little work, but should be ready for the May 22 weekend." The pair didn't mind being the only ones brave enough to test the water and sand Sunday and also brought their frisbee and base- ball gloves along for the fun. 'Reach for the Top' winners By Roberta Walker EXETER - The Reach for the Top Team from South Huron Dis- trict High School travelled to Owen Sound to defend their title as County. Champs. After four gruel- ing games, Exeter High is now the Tri -County Champion, and the team goes to London for the area fi- nals on Friday, May 5. The Reach for the I Top Team Concert By Roberta Walker GRAND BEND - After six years. of providing beautiful concerts for the local community, the Grand Bend Concert Association has dis- banded. There was a decline in sub- scriptions last year, with barely enough to pay the artists.perform- ing, and attendance at the concerts . was down from previous years. The subscription drive for 1989- 90 was very unpromising, pointing to possible deficits for the new sea- son. Deficit spending may be ac- ceptable in government, but Con- cert Association president Nan Freele reluctantly announced their decision to dissolve the committee. All money received from subscrib- ers for the new season will be re- members are Said Osman, Geoff Poole, David Thiel; Richard Hope, Dale Ducharme and Mamie Walker. Their coach is teacher Barbara Gold- ing. The team travelled to Owen Sound in the van of Philip Walker last Friday, to the competition in Owen Sound Collegiate Institute. They defeated Owen Sound, Sacred Heart Walkerton, and Centre Duffe- rin to clinch the title of Tri -County Association turned young Canadians. Everyone has • their own favorite concert or type of music, from woodwind or string quartets to the sound of brass; stir • - ring operatic arias; or a violin and piano in perfect harmony. - It has been a good six years for music lovers in the Bend area, and - the Association also provided bonus concerts featuring local groups, like the St. Marys Choir, the Goderich Harboraires, and the Forest High School Music Department. What was begun -by a small dedi- cated group of music lovers, led by Dawn Crabc,.has run its course and ended with.a.small group of -music lovers, some from the first years. Perhaps in time, community inter- - est will pick up and support such a C_h"amps. The next level of competition takes place at University of Western Ontario in London, from May 5-7, with the winners on Friday proceed- ing to final rounds which will be taped for TV broadcast later. The team reached London last year, and they are going to -try even harder to get into the finals. Good luck team! disbands venture in the future. But for now, the Association will continue to meet socially, and haunting memo- ries of music echo in the Grand Bend United Church, of old concerts past. This meeting constitutes the second public meeting to be held with regard to a proposed zoning by-law amendment to rezone approximately 4 hectares (10 acres) of landdescribed as part of Block 'F', Registered Plan 2 and Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, & 6 Plan 25R1747 located north of Lake Road and west of Alberta Street (as shown below) from "Development (D) Zone" to "Multiple Family Residential (R3) Zone" and "Commercial Tourist (CT) Zone". The proposed by-law would have permitted a 7 storey apartment building on Block A, cluster houses on Block B, townhouses on Block C, a small commercial development on Block D, and public open space on Block E. The council had determined that due to changes in the proposed zoning by-law amendment a sec- ond public meeting should be held pursuant to Section 34(16) of the Planning Act. The proposed changes ictclude: 1. Reducing the height of the proposed apartment building from 7 storeys to 6 storeys. 2. Reducing the total number of residential units from 150 to 132 units. 3.
