Dear Su
After 42 years as a journalist -
and more as a reader for pleasure -1
have no doubt which is the most
important sense to me: sight.
Without it, I could never have
read thousands of wonderful books,
seen the great films of the past half
century or the great plays and oper-
as of several centuries.
And as a travel columnist, who
has been in more than 100 coun-
tries, I could not have been perpetu-
ally amazed at the scenic variety of
this universe without sight.
That is why I support Operation
Eyesight Universal. For anything
that can be done to help sightless
persons provides them with the first
step to the wonders we, the sighted
ones, so much enjoy.
I suppose I particularly consider
the benefits of sight at Easter be-
cause it occurs at a time of year
when there is beginning to be so
much more to see. One small ex-
ample: we have crocuses planted in
a protected place outside our kitchen
window. My wife always records
the date of the first bloom. The ear-
liest has -been March 9. But they
have always bloomed by Easter.
A donation or a few spare hours
of work or a contribution of unused
eyeglasses will help someone else
see the flowers growing in their
gardens.
Operation Eyesight Universal's
address is P.O. Box 123, Stn. ","
Calgary, AB T2P 2H6. It only
takes $25 to restore a blind person
to sight in a developing country.
Sincerely,
Percy Rowe

Dear Sir:
My family recently attended a
family dance sponsored by the KW
Kids Club at the Kirkton-Woodham
Community Centre. It was very
much enjoyed by my husband, my-
self and our three children. In fact
all of the children had a great time.
But some parents were not privi-
leged enough to witness their child
really enjoying themselves with
their friends.
I can not believe that parents
could just drop their child at the
door and tell them to have a good
time. It was advertised as a Family
Dance, but very few families came -
just a lot of fun -loving kids with
no parent to guide them.
The KW community should be
commended for trying to get a fami-
ly activity going. It was great fun
for all. The adults and children alike
certainly showed their enthusiasm
and enjoyment dancing to the music
provided by the live band. 1 hope
this can be offered again for the
whole families interest.
I feel as a parent we have a moral
obligation to guide our children
through life and take experiences
like this to show your child proper
behavior and really get to know
them. We tend to get so caught up
in ourselves and our work that our
children are grown up before we
know it or know them.
I do some volunteer work at our
church with different children's pro-
grams and find parent involvement
nonexistent. How can ypu truly get
to know your child if you do not
get involved with their interests?
This is the foundation for a truly
enriching relationship with your
child that can blossom for a life
time.
From working at the nursing
home in Exeter, I see some grown
up children come in to see their par-
ents every week, because they care.
And I also see the elderly parents
who never get a visit from their
children, with kisses and hugs.
They feel so alone and lost.
What will happen to you in your
old age? Will your children find the
time in their busy schedule for you
and give you that needed kiss and
hug and spend family time with
you?
Yours truly,
Heather Montgomery.

Canada has quilt up a

one third of every tax dollar is
