EXETER - The South Huron

on Monday, April 24 in the South
Huron Rec Centre. About 170
delegates attended.
The conference began at 9:00
a.m. with registration and coffee or
tea. The morning agenda included a
speaker, Julie Lee from the
"Survival Through Friendship
House" in Goderich. The topics of
the three workshops were Tray Fa-
vours, Drug Use and Abuse which
concentrated on prescription and
over the counter substances, and
Break Open Lottery Ticket, which
gave details of a lottery used by
some Auxiliaries to raise money for
their local hospitals.
A noon luncheon was catered by
a unit of the Exeter UCW.
The afternoon concluded with Ex-
eter Auxiliary members modelling
fashions from Perry Originals, and
the installation of officers.

Library records
GODERICH - The Hensall, Exet-
er and Kirkton Branch Libraries'are
entering the age of technology and
, automation. The Huron County Li-
brary has used compact disc (CD)
technology to. place the records of
all its books on a single CD. In-
stead of music, this CD indexes
half a million titles and shows the
location of over two million books
in the 21 libraries which co-
operated to create it. .
The Public Access Catalog will
be the first catalog of library hold-
ings for most branches in Huron
County. (Town libraries have previ-
ously had a card catalog of books in
that particular branch). For all li-
brary users in Huron County, it
will bring a level of information
service previously expected only at
a large city library. A catalog of
this size will benefit the whole
community.
Because of its speed and sophisti-
,cation,_it will benefit professional,
business and farming people. Be-
cause of its simplicity and its ready
availability, it will benefit the
children and students. Because of
its completeness, it will benefit
both the regular and the occasional
user. It is called the Public Access
Catalog because it is very "user -

friendly".
The Huron County Library has
built the database of the compact
disc catalog along with twenty oth-
er county.and city libraries, includ-
ing Lambton, Middlesex and Bruce
County Libraries.
Fundraising will be undertaken
to purchase the computer equip-
ment needed to run the Public Ac-
cess Catalog at the Kirkton, Hen-
sall, and Exeter Branch Libraries.
The cost of each unit is approxi-
mately $3200 with a colour moni-
tor option of an additional $400.
The Library is approaching local
service clubs and businesses to ask
them to sponsor a catalog in the li-
brary. The Public Assess Catalog
will be suitably inscribed if any
one organization or individual un-
dertakes to sponsor the computer.
When a demonstration unit is
available in May, it will be setup
in the Branch Libraries so that lo-
cal residents and library users can
see how it works and try it'out.
The Huron County Library hopes
to install Public Access Catalogs
in the larger branch libraries in
1989. As soon as the money is
raised in any community, the com-
puter system can be set up and run-

Audition
GRAND BEND - Huron Country
Playhouse Artistic Director Tony
Lloyd had his hands full lately, au-
ditioning over 100 area youth for
parts in the '89 season's final main
stage production of Rodgers and
Hammerstein's The King and 1.
A chance to appear on stage at the
Huron Country Playhouse has
drawn youngsters six to 16 from
Grand Bend and surrounding com-
munities such as Exeter, Zurich,
Parkhill, Arkona, Dashwood, Hen-
sall, and Forest, and even from are-
as as far away as London, Kitchen-
er, Sarnia, and Toronto.
"I'm bowled over by the wealth of
local talent", says Lloyd of the
many young people he has encoun-
tered over the three evenings of au-
ditions that were held at the Grand
Bend Public School last week. Un-
fortunately, Mr. Lloyd will only be.
able to use about one quarter of
those individuals to play the sons
and daughters of the King.
A final decision should be made
by May 5.
