Mohawks one win away
EXETER - A victory tonight,
Wednesday, in Creemore, will give
-the Exeter Mohawks their second -
straight OHA Central Senior B
title.
The Mohawks crept to within one
game of the title after winning
game three of their best -of -seven -
series against the Creemore Chiefs
9-3 Saturday night in Creemore,
thanks to Jeff Shipley's five -goal
performance and they followed it up
by pounding the Chiefs Sunday
night 11-3 at the South Huron Rec
Centre to lead 3-1 in the series.
Creemore led 3-2 after one period
Saturday night but the Mohawks
pumped in four second -period and
three third -period goals while shut-
ting down their opponents in the
same time frame to take command
of the game.
The difference in Sunday night's
game was seven -second period goals
by the Mohawks, after leading only
2-1 after one period.
Creemore scored a total of six
goals in the two weekend games,
but five of the six goals came on
thepower play.
The Mohawks held'a commanding
9-1 lead after two periods Sunday
night and let Creemore control most
of the play early in the third period
and the Chiefs capitalized for a pair
of goals to cut the lead to 9-3,
something that concerned Mohawk
coach and manager Bob Rowe after
the game.
"We sure didn't play well in the
third period out there, but we were
tough in the first two. The boys
created their own breaks out there
and worked hard for the win.
"Pik, (Mohawk goalie Rick Pi-
kul), played another super game for
us and the boys responded well,"
said Rowe.
To finish off the Chiefs tonight
in Creemore, Rowe said the team
will have to continue to skate and
play good defensively.
I. think for us to win Wednesday
we have to play like we did in the
first period tonight, for the entire
game and don't let down in intensi-
ty. Don't count Creemore out of it.
I know we aren't, because they nev-
er give up," said Rowe.
Sunday night the Mohawks also
got good scoring balance. Joe
Scherer was the only player with a we
pair of goals and 10 other shooters'
chipped in with one goal each.
Scoring single goals were; John
Kernick, Dave Randerson, Jeff
McClenaghan, Jeff Shipley, Wayne
Urbshott, Paul Barton, Ron Elliot,
Quincy Wilker and Barry Baynham
with his first goal all year, regular
season, Hardy Cup and playoffs.
Scherer also led in the assist de-
partment with three, McClenaghan,
Kernick, Randerson, Al Gates, and
Wilker each had a pair and singles
went to Gord Brooks, Mark Soeh-
ner, Baynham, Barton and Shipley.
The Mohawks outshot the Chiefs
44-36 over the game, but Pikul
stopped 16 of 18 in the final period
to preserve the large margin of vic-
tory.
Saturday night the Chiefs capital-
ized on a seven -minute power -play,
after Dale Timmermans of the Mo-
hawks was called for a five-minute
major for fighting and given an ex-,
tra minor for being the aggressor,
:o score three times to take a 3-2
lead after one period of play.

Up and over - Dan Nicholson, of the Creemore Chiefs, goes up and over the back of Exeter Mohawks
captain Mark Soehner, during the fourth game of their Central Senior B final series Sunday night at
the South Huron Rec Centre. Exeter won that game 11-3 and 9-3 Sunday to take a commanding 3-1
lead in the best -of -seven series and can wrap it up tonight in Creemore.

filled with eight minor penalties,
one major penalty and two game
misconducts called to both sides.
O'Shea and Heckman both played
great games up front for Lucan,
while rearguards Scott Smith, Matt
Munro and Nathan Brown were
steady on the blueline.

Irish force sixth. game
LUCAN The Lucan Irish are
not dead yet.
The overall Junior D leader in
points during the regular season
lost the third and fourth games of
their best -of -seven division semi-
finals series against the Exeter
Hawks, but won Monday night 6-3
toforce a sixth game tonight,
(Wednesday), at the South Huron
Rec Centre.
The Hawks, in their quarter: final
series against the Thedford Lumber-
jacks, led 3-1 at one point but lost
the fifth and sixth games of the se-
ries before finally winning in the
rubber match.
"Nothing comes easy," said
Hawk coach Jack Nairn after Mon-
day's contest.
"We beat them three times al-
ready but its hard to play well all
the time. Its been a good series for
us so far, but nothing good comes
easy," said Nairn.
Irish coach Dave Revington said
his team has yet to play like the
team that lost only six times in 36
games during the regular season, o
far against Exeter.
"We played a lot better tonight,
(Monday) but we are not playing
anywhere near our capabilities. We
scored 13 goals in the first four
games of the series we averaged
seven a game during the season, so
I think our biggest problem has
been our lack of offense," said Rev-
ington.
To hopefully bring them a
change of luck, the Irish change all
of their usual sweaters, except for
goalie Brad Judd's uniform.
"We had a two-hour practice on
Sunday and the guys said they
wanted to try something different
and that is what they came up with.
It seemed to work," said Reving-
ton.
The Hawks took command of the
series by winning the third and
fourth game of the series after the
teams had split the first two games,
each in the other's rink.
The Hawks won the third game
of the series 3-1 last Wednesday
night at the Lucan Arena and came
to within one win of taking the se --
ries by winning the fourth game,
Friday night at the South Huron
Rec Centre 6-2.
Both goalies .played extremely
well- in last Wednesday's contest,
Brad Judd for the Irish and Todd
Campbell for Exeter. The Irish hit
no less than four goal posts behind
• Campbell or the outcome could
have been much different.
Scott Bell gave the Hawks a 1-0
lead with his goal from Doug Clark
and Dan Nairn at 7:24 of the first
period.
Glen Marshall's power -play tally
from Darren Neil, at 12:56 of the
period, got the Irish back on even
terms, but it was the only time
Campbell would be beaten that
night.
After both teams had many chanc-
es to take the lead for good in the
second, Clark got what turned out
to be the game -winner for the
Hawks, while on the power play,
from Jeff Anscms and Larry Lewis,
with less than two minutes to play
in the second.
Steve Dubarry got an unassisted,
power -play, insurance goal for the
Hawks at 11:39 of the third stanza
to close out the scoring in the con-
test. •
In Friday night's chippy contest,
the home -town Hawks led 1-0 after
one period and 3-2 after the second
and put the game away with three
third -period goals.
Clark gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead
with a nower-nlay goal at 7:13 of

the first period, from David Dal-

Cousineau's short handed goal at
1:26 of the second, from Shackle-
ton gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead and
the upped it six minutes into the
period when Shackleton chipped in
with a goal from Dickins and Cou-
sineau.
The Irish responded almost one
minute later when Tim Hayter con-
nected Dean Schram and Todd
Hayter and they cut the lead to one
at 17:50 of the second when Brad
Muir connected from Tim Hayter
and Scott Dcnomy.
Putting the game on ice for the
Hawks in the third period were;
Dickins from Cousineau and Dubar-
ry, Dubarry from Jim Lewis and
Mark Morrissey and Nairn closed
out the scoring with a goal from
Harlen Tinncy and Scott Bell.
Dan Jenken, who started for Lu -
can in place of Brad Judd between
the pipes, stopped 28 Hawk shots
and Todd Campbell tumid aside 25
for Exeter.
Lucan 6 Exeter 3
•Monday's game was deadlocked 2-
2 after one period but the Irish took
command and outplayed the Hawks
2 and led 5-3 after two periods. The
Irish might have hit double digits if
it had not been for several sensa-
tional stops by Exeter goalie Bill
Pauli.
What seemed to turn the tide for
Lucan was Joe Febrey's goal, from ,
Dean Doerr and Rick Weishar, with
37 seconds left to play in the sec-
ond period to make it 5-3 Lucan, af-
ter Exeter's Jim Lewis had cut the
lead to one goal, just under a min-
ute before, despite being outplayed
most of the second period.

quick goals in the first five min-
utes of the second half; Gardner
scored two with Miners assisting

of the net, unassisted.
Godcrich came to within one on
marker from Harrison' at 7:03.
Exeter fought hard with Miners
setting Sonya Lawrence up in front
of the net for her lone goal at 4:44.

the game close and scored with 58
seconds left, but Gardner and Min-
ers again combined seven seconds
