Times Advocate, 1989-02-15, Page 19Sports Spotlight by Wayne Proctor • i I recently purchased a magazine called "The National Sports Re- view" and it is a sports lovers delight. It is an American magazine and it is full of quotes anecdotes and other iittle sports tidbits that occurred in 1988 as well as completely wrapping up the year in sports. - The magazine is published by Preview Publishing Inc. and Infos- ports and selfs`in Canada for $4.99. There is- so much amusing stuff in it that I thought I would share some of it with you in case you hadn't seen it yet. There is a feature story on an up-and-coming ball player by the name of Todd Welborn, a New York Mets farmhand, who was voted flake -of -the year. Instead of chewing bubble gum or chewing tobac- co, this guy puts a pinch of dirt between his check and gums, but he • mixes it with Hawaiian Punch. Houston Astros Pitcher Larry Anderson was a man of deep thought in 1988. To a Houston Chronicle reporter, Anderson poscd the following questions. Why does sour cream have an expiration datc?...What do they call a coffee break at a tea company?...How can you tell when you are running out of.invisible ink?...How come fat chance and slim chance mean the same thing?...Anderson's best T shirt said, "Roses are red violets are blue, I'm a schizophrcnic and I. am too." Tony Adrduini, 35 of Beltsville Maryland was declared winner of the Fisher Nuts Nuttiest Sports Fan competition because he owns 1,700 - major league bats, 558 NHL sticks, 30,000 autographs, 30,000 baseball cards and also because he attended 454 consecutive Baltimore Orioles home games. ' Minnesota Twins outfielder Kirby Puckett recicved three votes for _mayor of Alexandria Virginia in their municipal election. Morganna, the kissing bandit, spent the night in a Baltimore jail after smooching Orioles' Cal Ripkin May 2. Her cell mates were prostitutes and drug offenders. Under the heading first in perfume -- A West German Company de- veloped a signature scent for tennis player Gabriella Sabatini, there - _by -making -her the -first female athlete in history to have a line of perfume named after her. • • Wayne Gretizky's trade to the Los Angeles Kings was called the trade of the century. There have been some others over the years not quite as well known but certainly more amazing. • Istvan Gaal, of the Kitchener Concordia Kickers, was such a horn- • ble soccer player that he was traded for a soccer ball worth 527.50. In January 1983, Tom Martin's Western Hockey League rights were traded by the Seattle Breakers to Victoria - for a team bus. In late 1987, the Detroit Tigers needed some relief help as they were driving for a pennant. The picked up Dickie Notes from the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later. When the season was over, the Tigers sent Noles back to the Cubs, so he got traded for himself. Trading for Gre trky was even the most astounding piece of sports commerce made by Kings' owner Bruce McNall. He traded a race horst to Donald Trump for an apartment at Trump Towers in New York City. Maple Leafs owner Harold Ballard commenting on his reputation, "If the good die young, I`II probably live to be 203." Under the heading "Graffiti" and the sub heading Maniac Man Marc Laforge, a defenceman for the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League was kicked out of hockey for a year owing to his an- tics during a melee in which he attacked eightdifferent players who were completely defenceless. In . one tale, Laforge repeatedly slammed Guelph goalie Andy Helmuth's head on the ice. Again under the heading Graffiti, the magazine said the best Olympic performace in a losing cause in the summer games was Roy Jones' effort in the 156 pound boxing final. He lost 3-2 but clearly' won the fight. And in the the winter games it was Elizabeth Manley's long pro- . gram in the women's figure skating. She beat both Katarini Witt and Debi Thomas, but settled for the silver because of lower com- pulsory scores. The magazine asks the question is nothing sacred any more? The Seattle Mariners sold the rights to the seventh -inning stretch to U.S. West District. And finally under the heading "Run for Cover" - The Ncw York Mcts got off to an inauspicious start at their new spring training complex in Port St. Lucie Florida March 5. Not only did they lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2, but 37 outfield sprinklers errupted in unison in the eighth inning, forcing: the outfielders to run for cover. Town and Country Bowling . Exeter goaltender Darren Kints frustrated Chatham shooters early in the game with.many fine saves. Exeter opened the scoring early in the game when Sean McCann netted an. unassisted goal. - •Then early in the second period, Mark Glavin made it 2-0 with help from Ian Jean and McCann before Chatham finally got on- the board-. later in the period: - . But just over a minute later, Ex- eter.regained the two -goal cushion when Glavin got his second of the game, from Jeff Lingard and Ryan Stuart. Just over two minutes into the final period, Glavin completed -his hat trick 'with Matt Godbolt pick- ing up the only assist.
