For about 15 years now I have been watching games from Maple
Leafs Gardens in Toronto on television Saturday nights as part of
Hock.:y Night in Canada. Last weekend I finally got to sec some of
the behind -the scenes activities when I went to the Gardens to cover
Dave Shaw's game with the New York Rangers.
My intention when I went there was to interview Shaw after his
morning skate about what life is like on the road in the National
Hockey League and watch him during the game that night: .
Shortly after I got there I knew I was going to be in for a long
day.
I arranged everything with the Maple Leafs' Director of Public Re-
lations Bob Stellick about two weeks prior to my coming down and
he would leave me a pass for the Rangers practice and a game pass. I
went to ttfe proper entrance at the Gardens where my pass was sup-
posed to be waiting for me and sure enough it wasn't.
The guard at the entrance told Inc I should call the P.R. office and
find out what happened to the pass. I was told that Stellick's wife
just had her first baby the day before and he must have forgot to
leave my pass for the practice because of all the excitement.
So after finally convincing the person who was taking his place in
thc office I was who I said I was there a pass was finally issued.
With pass in my grubby little hand I trotted into the Gardens the
Leafs were just finishing up practice. There were about three extra
players taking some extra shooting practice.
There were people scattered throughout the arena and I knew I had
a few minutes to wait until the Rangers to come onto the ice so I
thought I would park myself a few rows behind the Maple Leafs
bench to wait for the Rangers to appear.
Boy was that a big mistake!
I was unaware that sitting higher up in the stands watching the
goings-on was none other than Harold Ballard, the owner himself.
He did not appreciate me sitting a few rows behind his beloved
team's bench and was yelling at me to move. The only problem was
I didn't hear him the first few times and he was getting angrier with
me by the moment until finally somebody else heard him and told
me he wanted me to move.
I moved to the other side of the Gardens for about ten minutes un-
til I glanced across the ice and saw. Bruce Shaw,Jr. and Sr. sitting in
the stands across the way.
So I walked back again and finally caught.up with the Shaws,
who in turn were supposed to introduce me to Dave, who by then
was on the ice for his game -day skate.
I told the Shaws about my early run-in with Ballard and they
.thought it funny and when they looked up to'sce if Ballard was still
there, Rangers' General Mananger Phil Esposito was sitting in the
scat next to Ballard and they thought it it good idea if I go up there
and get a picture of them because they saki Esposito might want
that picture after Harold is no longer around.
After Shaw's practice I went back to the dressing room and waited
for him to come out. I hoped to talk to Esposito about Shaw but
unfortunately I missed my opportunity.
I did talk to Dave for about 20 minutes and found him very ap-
proachable. He gave me straight honest answers to all my questions.
I was even fortunate enough to meet Shaw's teammate Guy Lafleur.
After killing about seven hours between the practice and the game,
which isn't hard to do in Toronto, my pass for the game was wait-
ing for me when I got back there.
After years of watching television games on television for so long
I finally got to watch a game from the press box. I sat beside a guy
who works for The Sports Network and the sports editor for the St.
Catharines Standard newspaper. There were others I• had recognized
from television.
I must say, despite some of the problems I suffered, I had a very
enjoyable time there and realize what life is like in the big leagues,
of hockey and newspapers. Maybe we should invite those guys
down to try out the new, enclosed press box at the South Iluron Rec
Centre.
* * *
A bunch of Dave Shaw teammates and friends from the Exeter Ex-
press baseball team went down to Montreal to watch thc Rangers
and Canadicns play at the Forum after buying their tickets from El-
li:;on travel in July and received a mention in Michael Ferber's col-
umn in thc Montreal Gazette on Friday.
The column tells how Doug Ellison would get tickets for Shaw's
games and how his Express teammates have been following him to
thc games since Shaw broke into the league four years ago.
