Four of the five cases were verified. By the end of 1988, the agency was serving 46 families in which child abuse had occurred. Local Director of Family and Children's Services, John Penn, says the agency's goal in revealing these statistics is to remind the public that child abuse is a problem which occurs not ,only in large metropolitan area and far -away places but one which occurs close to home. Social work staff at Family and Children Services work with fami- lies where abuse has occurred to I help reduce the risk to children and to assist parents to find better child-rearing practices. At times it is necessary to place children in foster care in 'order to protect them from future harm. At the end of 1988, the agency had placed 53 children in its 48 local foster homes. Foster care is often required only for a temporary period until fami- lies are more able to meet the needs of their children. Six chil- dren were returned to their families during the month of December. The agency deals not only with problems related to child abuse, ',ut helps families to deal with a variety of problems. At the end of 1988, it was serving 230 local families. Fifty-two volunteers assist the agency's social work staff in pro- viding services to families. One project which relies heavily on volunteer help is the agency's an- nual Christmas Bureau. This year it provided assistance to 320 fami- lies, including 700 children. Though the Christmas Bureau ef- fort has ended for another year, the. agency depends on local residents to assist it with year-round pro- grams. Inquiries from people seek- ing volunteer work arc always wel- come. Letters to the Editor Dear Sir: It would appear that the world has completely reversed itself! What once was called good is now called bad, and bad is now called good. If a man is a gentleman of good man- ners, he is called a wimp. If a wom- an chooses to stay home to care, jor her family rather than to pursue a career of her own, she is labelled "odd", "strange' and not belonging to the permissive "me" generation. The Bible says a man is to be head of his household, to love and respect his wife, to apply discipline to his children with a firm but kind- ly hand, not harsh or cruel, so as not to alienate them. The woman is to love and respect her husband, to rear her eitildren to be kind, caring and respectful persons. Too few little children today can run to their mothers to havetheir hurts kissed away. They are much more likely to be confronted by a stranger and to be told not to be a "cry-baby". The damage this can cause to a small child's personality is incalculable. Thousands of young people have never known a sense of security or belonging. This is the pattern they carry into their adult lives. They give no quarter and re- ceive none, resulting in the crime - ridden, violent world in which we live today. An increasing number of women have become heads of governments, colleges, large corporations, banks, etc. They have become TV anchor persons, judges, lawyers, and are found in the pulpit. Even military and police forces are not immune from this invasion. Before this on- slaught, men are increasingly being CASH CROP FARM LAND for 1989 relegated to lower positions; some season or longer. Sandra Strang, Clerk and social programs in our western world, no one needs to go hungry or be without shelter. But we con- sider ourselves deprived if we do not have our color TV, microwave ov- ens, automatic dishwashers, etc. • In a TV intcrvicw, a prominent member of Women's Lib. told how she had taken into her home a sin- gle parent with a small child. She said that the joy she received when arriving home to be welcomed by this small child made her wonder if W.L. was as attractive as she had once thought. In another intcrvicw, the mother of another noted advocate of W.L. wondered if her daughter, as she grew older, would receive the com- fort and understanding she needed from a cold typewriter! As the number of abortions increase and the Women's Liberation movement grows - - wouldn't this suggest that the western world will ulti- mately be faced with a serious problem of under -population? It would appear that man/woman made laws arc not working. Law- lessness and disrespect arc classic examples of what is meant. Isn't it. time that we turned our world back to its proper order -- the one that our Maker ordained from the begin- ning of time? Shalom Gladys E.
