Areahockey talk
Editor's note: The TA. has invited executive members from local
junior and senior hockey clubs, Hawks. Mohawks and Irish to state
what their views are for the current season and anything else they
would like to bring to the public's attention.
By Dave Revington, coach of Lucan Irish
Exeter Tournament: Congratulations to Jack Nairn and his Hawk
team on winning the Consolation final in their annual tournament.
The work of George Pratt, Al Quinn and the Jr. Hawk executive
should also be duly recognized.
A Bronx cheer to the Port Elgin Jr. C team for their failure to
show Saturday morning, which created a scheduling nightmare and
undermined the reputation of the tournament. I doubt they'll get a
chance to repeat.
All Star game: On January 14 at 7 p.m. all -star players from 19
teams took part in our league's annual all-star game - held at the Lu -
can Community Centre. It was an opportunity to showcase our
most talented players who usually provide us with a wide-open, en-
tertaining game.
It is just_as much a social event, where one can meet the players
and representatives from the newer teams in our league in addition to
renewing old acquaintances, Paul Barnes, Scott Denomy and Doug
Haskett represented Lucan Irish this year.
Officiating: The OHA assigns a great many games from our
league to rookie officials. To gain the necessary experience to offi-
ciate there, people have to start somewhere and the Jr. D. level is it.
That is the way it is.
This year seems to be a turnover year for young referees with more
unfamiliar faces and names.
I believe that the most important quality a referee can attain (and
perhaps the most difficult) is consistency. If the players know early
in a game what the referee will tolerate - then the game should devel-
op a certain tempo or flow.
I have found that the best method is to try to establish our game.
If we work on minimizing our own mistakes and forget about the re-
ferees mistakes, then he shouldn't become a factor in the outcome of
the game.
These guys are doing their best so we should try to work with
them to improve the calibre of the league. Screaming at referees sel-
dom accomplishes anything.
Lucan Irish Six: Our record of 22-4 would indicate a highly suc-
cessful season. Prior to the Hawk tournament we won 13 consecu-
tive games. Some impressive numbers - but are we as good as our
record.
A weekend loss to Weslesley in the Exeter Tournament (7-4) dis-
played some weaknesses.
The play of our specialty team (power play and penalty killing)
was poor, and our play without the puck was uninspired.
Playing from behind and coping with adversity are things we have
not been used to this season and it shows.
It was as much my fault for not having the team prepared as it was
theirs for not "showing up". We have a good team and hopefully
this loss will help to make us better.
In closing: On behalf of Manager Ken Freeman, Trainers John
Miller and Bev Hirtzell and the Irish Six players I would like to
voice our appreciation for the ongoing work and support of our exec-
utive and Booster Club.
Successful hockey teams tend to have strong, efficient executive
staffs whose efforts should not be ignored.
Our goal in September was to make the playoffs - which we have
achieved. Our next goal is to win the last playoff game we play -
which promises to be a great challenge.
