Times Advocate, 1989-01-18, Page 8Page 8 Times -Advocate, January 18, 1989 Pirate loyalty - Constantine Megus (left), and Mark House star in the UWO production o Pirates of Penzance now playing at the Talbot Theatre. ■ ■ Pirates pours it on By Adrian Harte LONDON The UWO Gilbert and S.ullivan Society proves once again they know how to keep audiences coming back year after year. This season's Pirates of Penzance at the Talbot Theatre maintains a steady flow of favourite music, singing and dancing enough to warm any audience's heart. Pirates continues the seafaring theme with which Gilbert and Sullivan won audiences in H.M.S. Pina- fore. This makes for one of their best -loved operettas, featuring music many people already know without having seen Pirates. While the set of this year's production is not quite as elaborate as some of the society's previous efforts, the creative, and occasionally humourous, use of lighting affords a good backdrop against which the swash- buckling romantic comedy unfolds. Some excellent performances come to light in Pi- rates. It is hard to imagine a better choice for the part of pirate king than Constantine Mcgus, whose voice, stature, and stage .presence trigger a whole series of del igfitful possiblilities. Linda Garner, as Mabel, gets the chance to show off her clear and powerful soprano, and Brian George returns to Talbot Theatre to exploit the comic potential of Major-General Stanley. An extra verse in the Major -General's famous pat- ter -song updates it to encompass Free -Trade, proving Gilbert and Sullivan's brand of political satire is -as valid today as it was in the 19th century. In fact, the entire cast gets full marks for enthusi- asm. Half of them are apparently battling a flu epi- demic, yet little of it shows on stage. Last Friday, lead tenor Mark House's voice gave way to the virus after the first act. He completed the show, lip-synching as William Brown sang while continuing to conduct the London Syinphonia. The audience's applause re- Elected the appreciation of their efforts. As of press time, it is understood House's voice has returned. - Those who enjoy light -operetta, Gilbert and Sulli- van, or simply prefer stories with happy endings have only five chances left to see Pirates of Penzance before it closes Saturday evening.
