won by Mrs. Ken Glavin.
Kim Crawford favoured with
a piano solo.
Walter Fydenchuk
presented a slide show on
Alaska. Some of the
highlights are as follows.
The name Alaska, was
derived from the Alaska
natives language, which
means '"rhe Great Coun-
try," which it truly is. It's
twice as big as Texas,
stretching for 2700 miles
from East to West and
spanning 4 time zones.
in 1964 on Good Friday,
parts of Alaska were shaken
by one of the most severe
earthquakes ever recorded
in the history of North
America.
The temperature in the
interior, around Fairbanks
ranges from 90 degrees in
summer to 60 degrees in
winter. Fairbanks is only 150
miles from the arctic
• circle, but in spite of this,
gorgeous dahlias the size of
6" plates, 8 foot high sun-
flowers, and giant cabbages,
at least twice the size of the
cabbages in this area; seem
to thrive in the short summer
season of long days and
intense light.
About 450 road miles west
of Fairbanks is Dawson City
in the Yukon Territory.
During the gold rush days
1898-1900 it was a bustling
city of 35000. It was called
the Paris of the north and the
largest community west of
Winnipeg.
It is now an historic ghost
town with a permanent
population of about 700.
Many of the old buildings,
dating back to the gold rush
era are being restored by
Parks Canada.
As a boy Pierre Burton
used to play• in the old
saloons and dance halls. The
Burton home and Robert
Service Cabin are on the
same street and both are in a
good state of repair.
The slide show was con-
cluded with a tape recording
of Robert Services Poem,
"The Spell of the Yukon." As
appropriate slides were
flashed on the screen to
make the message in the
poem more meaningful as to
the vastness and natural
beauty of the north.
"It's the great big broad
land "Way up yonder, Its the
forests where silence has
lease, It's the beauty that
thrills me with wonder, It's
the silence that fills me with
peace."
Karen Hoffman favored
with a piano solo. And a
game of musical stockings
was played.
Exchange of mystery
sister gifts was conducted
and all sang We Wish you a
Merry Christmas.
Lunch was served by Irene
Haugh, Alma Morlock,
Loretta Ball and Lois
Hodgins.
