Mary Mills Granton women host youth leaders By MRS. E. SUMMERS GRANTON The annual meeting of the Granton General U.C.W. was held on December 11 in the church. Preceding the meeting the members, and invited guests, enjoyed a pot luck Christmas supper. Representatives from the following youth groups were guests, Cub leader Larry Ketetaars, and his assistants Miss Cathy O'Neill, and Steven Ready, Mrs. Robt. Harloff and her assistant KIDS WIN 520.00 By drawing, painting or colouring a picture of "Winter on the Farm" you could win a 1st prize of $20.00 a 2nd prize of $10.00 or a 3rd prize of $10.00. You must be between the ages of 4-14. All entries will be displayed at our Kirkton Farm and Garden Supply Centre and must be in the store by Fri. Jan. 4th. Following the supper, Mrs. Fred Cook president asked Rev. Morden to lead the members in prayer, then welcomed everyone, and gave a reading. A slate of officers who will form the general U.C.W. executive for the next two years was ac- cepted. Mrs. Ken Hardie, treasurer reported a very successful year financially for all the units. Donations were voted to the Sunday School, the Bible Society and Mission and Service Fund. , the Teen Girls group home in London, Alma College Camp Kee -Mo -Kee and a sub- stantial sum to the Board of Stewards. The program was under the direction of Unit 3. Mrs. Leroy Bryan President gave a reading "Let's think of Christmas." This unit had prepared a hilarious skit, a take off on the old fashioned School Christmas concert. By the finale the audience had laughed so much their sides ached. Granton Community Bible study The Granton community Bible study group held a get acquainted meeting over coffee and Christmas dainties at the home of Mrs. Al Cocquyt on December 11. Some interesting discussions took place, and by the time the meeting was over, everyone knew each other. He said that Jesus, turned his life from one of darkness and despair, to one of hope and peace. Next Sunday the regular teaching and Communion service will be held. Also a special evening service of Christmas singing and fellowship will be held at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome. Church news At the United Church Rev. Elwood Morden was in charge of the service for the third Sunday in Advent, and entitled his sermon "Christmas is coming." Will we take the road to Christ- mas, or the road to Bethlehem. There will be people making lavish plans to decorate their homes, and make a big impression. What is Christmas going to be for us, said Rev. Morden, which road will we take, do we want to keep Christmas Christian and take the road of the shepherds, and are we going to keep Christ in the centre of our Christmas, and be a Christian Witness for Him? Allison Brown performed the ceremony of lighting the third candle in the Advent Wreath, denoting joy. The Sunday School class of Mrs, Robt Garret and her assistant Mrs. Kenneth Waugh, presented a display in keeping with Christmas. It was a treat to hear these young children singing "joy to the World." An arrangement of flowers, poinsettiasand white mums was placed in the church by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hardie, in memory of the late members of the Hardie family. The service at St. Thomas Anglican Church was with- drawn on Sunday so that the congregation could join with Saintsbury in a combined service at St. Paul's Church, Kirkton. Prof. Walter Creery of Kirkton was in charge of the service. Rev. Mary Mills who resigned as minister of the three charges owing to ill health, was honored with a farewell gift. A time of fellowship was enjoyed later over luncheon. St. Thomas A.C.W. Mrs. Clarence Lewis was the hostess for the St. Thomas A.C.W. meeting on December 6, which took the form of a pot. luck supper. Mrs. Lewis presided and the roll call was answered with a thought for Advent or Christmas, with members ting poems, and readings. Rev. Mary Mills expressedsome thoughts for Advent. Following the business period, Rev. Mills was honored with a farewell gift, having resigned as rector of the parish owing to ill health. Personals Granton students of Medway High School, taking part in the Christmas con- cert on December 13, were Helen and Bettyann Herbert, and Shirley Middleton, all members of the Junior choir. Vicki Bakker and Brenda Tomlin, the senior choir, and Anne Garrett who is a member of the band. We are happy to report that Mrs. Elwyn Bryan is now out of hospital, and is recuperating at home. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Elders of Chatham, on the arrival of twins, a boy and a girl on Thursday, December 13. Mrs. Elders is the former Mary Rose Powell, and daughter of Mrs. Fred Crouch of Granton. Mrs. IJosephi Bryan of London was an overnight guest of Mrs. Clare Bryan on Tuesday, December 11 and attended the pot luck supper and general U.C.W. meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins and Lois were Monday, December 10 midday dinner guests of Mrs. Wm. Rodd of Exeter. A speedy recovery is extended to Mr. Wm. Lambert, who is recovering from major surgery at Victoria Hospital South St. Campus. Mr. and Mrs. Lambert were former residents of Granton, and are now living in Strathroy. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hodgins and family were Saturday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hermon Foster of Exeter.
