Kirkton horticulturalists pick
The Kirkton Horticulture
Society held their annual
meeting December 4 in the
Kirkton Woodham Com-
munity Center with a good
crowd in attendance.
Mrs. Philip Johns, the
president, welcomed all and
Jean Copeland lead a sing
song of Christmas carols
accompanied by Shirley
Kerslake.
Mrs. Percy Hodgins in-
troduced the speaker Mr.
Tony Hooydomk from
Fanshawe Nursery, who
spoke on kinds and care of
roses, which w'as very in-
teresting. He also demon-
strated the pruning of
shrubs. He was thanked by
Mrs. Wallace Selves.
All enjoyed Christmas
numbers rendered by a trio
of Mrs. Reg Morrison, Mrs.
George Burgin, Mrs. Jack
Marshall accompanied by
Mrs. Earl Stephens.
There were several lucky
draws of poinsettia plants
during the evening and all
members were given
hyacinth bulbs for indoor
planting.
Miss Jean Copeland read
the activity report and Mrs.
Elson Lynn the minutes of
the last annual meeting, also
the treasurer's report.

conducted the election of

Stephen
arena set
for opening

The Stephen Township
arena will be having its
Official Opening on Sunday
December 16. The activity
starts with a broomball
game at 6 p.m. for all ages
(bring a broom) Opening
ceremonies are slated for 7
p.m. and free public skating
goes from 7.15-8.30 p.m. At
8.30, you won't want to miss
the "Challenge Cup" hockey
game with Stephen East
taking on Stephen West.
Rumour has it that
"special referees" will be on
hand to officiate the contest.
Don't miss it
The Stephen arena is of-
fering power skating for
youngsters who want to
brush up on their skating
skills. The session started
December 10 and includes 15
hours of on -ice instruction.
The fee is set at $15. For
information call Frank
Funston at 228-6425.
Anyone interested in used
paperback books should drop
by the Resource Centre and
pick some up. The books are
free of charge and are here
for the taking. If you know
anyone who is bedridden and
would enjoy some reading
material, let us know and
we'll drop them off some
books.
Stephen Nursery School
youngsters will be having
their Christmas parties on
December 20 for the Tuesday
and Thursday group and
December 21 for the others.
Santa Claus himself is ex-
pected to drop by with some
surprises for the pre-
schoolers.
All skaters in the Stephen
Township figure skating club
should take note that there
will be no skating lessons
December 22 and 29 over the
holidays. Skating will
resume January 5.
The Opti -Mrs. are still
gathering donations for their
Christmas baskets for needy
families. If you have any
toys, clothes or food items
that you wish to donate
please drop them off at JAD
McCurdy School or the
Resource Centre in Huron
Park.
Youth meet
The Youth of Zion
Lutheran church held their
meeting at the home of
Howard Datars Judith
Mellecke opened with prayer
and Sandra Datars led in
Bible study Recreation was
watching the beginning of
"The Sound of Music." This
was enjoyed by all.
Insurance members meet
Lutheran Life Insurance
members held their annual
meeting at St. Peter's
Lutheran church, Zurich.
Wednesday, December 5th,
opening with a pot luck
supper.
Don Rader, president,
welcomed everyone and a
report was given by the
secretary -treasurer, Charles
Martene. The officers were
returned for another year. A
donation was made to the
Building. Fund of Zion
Lutheran church games
followed.
Personals
Melvin Restemayer is a
patient in L'niverAity
Hospital. London, where he
is having treatment on his
thumb.
Mrs. A.C. Whittier,
Mississauga, spent some
time here with Mrs. Hilda
Wein, Miss Erma Wein,
Clinton, was a weekend
visitor.
Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Rader
visited in Ailsa Craig,
Sunday with Mr. and Mrs.
Wellwood Gill at Craigweil
Gardens.
Mrs. Reinhold Miller is a
patient in South Huron
Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Hubert
Miller have returned home
following a 10 day vacation
in Amsterdam, Holland with
their two daughters. Dianne
and Vickie while there they
attended the "Holiday onlce"
show many times and also
took bus tours of Holland and
a train trip to Germany.
Dianne and Vickie will be
returning from Holland
sometime this week for the
Christmas Holidays.
Lisa Miller spent ten days
with her grandmother Ford
in Exeter while her parents
were away.
