Sell with sizzle
resort people told
"Selling Grand Bend with
a sizzle" was the topic at last
Tuesday night's meeting of
the Chamber of Commerce.
Guest speaker was Becky
Hales of the visitors and
conventions services for the
city of London. Ms. Hale told
Chamber members that they
should use the right words in
their advertising so that
readers can almost "taste"
the hotdogs and hamburgs
when they read the
brochure.
Ms. Hale complimented
the Chamber of their slogan
"Grand Bend is for lovers."
She said that they should
"play up" the phrase, and
include lovers of water,
sand, sun, night life, shop-
ping, and so on.
Board picks
up the tab
The squeaky wheel cer-
tainly gets the grease in
education circles.
The Huron County board of
education learned Tuesday
that on occasion govenment
itself can become a victim of
government bureaucracy.
John Cochrane. director of
education. told the board
that a recent appeal of the
board's education requisi-
tion to the village of Bayfield
had been appealed. He ex-
plained that each year the
board passes its budget and
then divides up the amount
of money to be paid into
education coffers by
municipalities in the county.
He said the board notifies
each municipality of its ap-
portionment and bills it for
the amount. He said
Bayfield had objected to the
amount it was billed and
appealed the matter.
The director said any
appeal by a town or township
is sent to a special meeting
of clerks and treasurers in
_the county. That group hears
the arguement raised by the
appealing municipality and
acts as an arbitrator in the
matter. He said the clerks
had heard the appeal and
voted in favor of the board's
requisition.
Bayfield was not satisfied
with those results and took
the matter to the Ontario
Municipal Board. A hearing
date was set for December
10 in the municipal offices in
Bayfield.
The OMB instructed the
board of education to notify
all clerks and treasurers of
the meeting by first class
mail. Cochrane said that
was no sooner done than the
municipal board sent the
board of education a bili for
$25. presumably for the ren-
tal of the hall.
"The wheels of
government." muttered
Cochrane.

Chamber secretary -
manager Bob Simpson said
that they were very pleased
with the turn out for the
meeting. Despite un-
favourable weather and
other meetings scheduled for
that night, more than 30
Chamber members showed
up.
President Nick Carter said
that the Chamber was
saddened over the death of
two members last week.
Eric McElroy of Grand Bend,
a founding member of the
Chamber, and George
Knapp of Brantford, owner
of the Main street
amusement park both died
the previous week.
The Chamber is going
ahead with plans to move
their information booth to a
more visible location on the
corner of highway 81 and 81
crescent. Simpson said that
he was taking sketches to the
planning board. "We don't
foresee any problems," he
said. Plans include an at-
tractive new sign and
eventually they would like to
add public washrooms.
Tickets for the Chamber's
wild game dinner on
November 17 are still
available. The dinner is
going to be served buffet
style, with all -you -can -eat of
such dishes as venison and
rabbit. It will be held at Gord
and Jean's banquet hall and
music for the dance will be
provided by the Desjardines.
The Chambers annual
meeting will be held
December 4. A new slate of
officers will be installed at
that time.
Plans were also settled for
the annual children's
Christmas party to be held at
Grand Bend Public School on
December 15.

The Dairy Princess acts as
a goodwill ambassador for
the milk producers in the
County. The basic goal of the
program is to improve
communications between
the producer and the con—
suming public. The ob-'
jectives are to improve
nutritional knowledge and
the understanding of modern
dairy farming.
Visits to service clubs,
women's groups, schools and
participation in various
community functions are
typical Dairy Princess ac-
tivities which help to meet
the goals of the program.
