Will pave
parking lot
While planning continues
on the development of
parking behind the stores on
the west side of Exeter's
Main Street, council decided
this week to transfer some
funds from that project •to
pay for the paving of the
parking area behind the
municipal offices on the east
side of the street:
Roads and drains com-
mittee chairman Ted Wright
said the funds won't be
needed for the west side
project this year and this had
prompted the committee to
decide to pave the municipal
building lot.
Cost of that project has
been listed at $4,800. The
right-of-way off Andrew
Street will also be paved.
The committee also
recommended that new
sidewalks be built on the east'
side of Senior Street from
Sanders to Gidley this year.
Wright noted there wasn't
much money for sidewalks
and said the town was falling
behind in this regard.
"We're falling behind'
badly," he added.
Both recommendations
were approved, by council.
The property and parks
committee reported that
Gregus Construction had
submitted the low tender for
some work planned on the
local library and municipal
office. Cost of the main-
tenance work has been set at
$3,655 and committee
chairman Lossy Fuller said
the work would commence
immediately.
Scarecrows
Were busy
The Exeter OPP -were
among the detachments
using parked out -of -service
cruisers in an attempt to
slow down holiday traffic
over the weekend, but
basically most of their cars
were in use due to a heavy
number of occurrences.
The Exeter detachment
investigated 10 accidents in
which five. people were in-
jured and property damage
amounted to over $50,000.
There were 10 seizures
made under the Liquor
Control Act and 16 Highway
Traffic infractions as well.
One person was charged
with impaired driving.
There was a series of
breakins in Zurich over the
weekend and extra officers
were employed in connection
with Friedsburg Days at
Dashwood.
The experiment of using
out -of -service cruisers along
highways was carried out by
most detachments.
Superintender.t H.E.
Sparling, said the police
were "just looking for some
way of slowing down drivers
and making them more
aware of their driving
habits."
Sparling said although the
test has never been done in
this area before, he has
heard a similar experiment
had good results in the
United States when cruisers
were left at highway in-
terchanges. '
