Healing new wounds
It is a shame that the amendment which was put forward by Al
Quinn at the Exeter Hawks annual meeting Wednesday.night was dis-
carded. While it may have been somewhat cumbersome, the basic idea
was a good one.
Quinn suggested that someone be made accountable for all the equip-
ment purchased over the course of the season. Not only would that il-
luminate any waste which might occur, it would also keep open the
lines of communication between the coaching staff and the executive --
something which is badly needed in the organization,
Many of the internal problems which plagued the Hawks this season
might have been averted if members of the executive had communicat-
ed their feelings to the coaching staff. A few well chosen complaints --
in private -- might have saved a lot of grief.
As far as accountability is concerned, in any form it can only be an
asset to a governing body. Accountability is, after all, a form of com-
munication in itself:
It might be worthwhile for the club to consider a similar amendment
at the next meeting July 6. I realize that amendments can only be made
at the annual meeting, but could not the next gathering be considered
simply an extension of Wednesday night?
I think the circumstances warrant such a move.
It would be pure folly for the 1-lawks executive to steam _into next
season without objectively analyzing what went wrong this year --
and, more important, how to prevent it Irorp happening again. That
might be reason crtough to bend the amendn\ent ruts slightly, not only
to reconsider Quinn's proposal, but to accommodate any other sugges-
tions.
At the very least it would generate discussion.
Everyone associated with the Exctcr Ilawks Junior D club has gone
through a rough, painful season. The scars it has left were apparent
Wednesday night in the empty scats and the silence when nominations
were called for. But if the team is to survive and prosper, the govern-
ing body must.patch the gaping holes and get on with the business of
hockey. '
Nominations for potential executive candidates should be forwarded
to Tom Dalrymple (235-2704). •
Letters
Dear Sir:
Before you left on..your vaca-
tion we spoke briefly on
N.H,L:hockey.
I realize the season is now
over, but Hockey fans arc age-
less and keep up their interest
without regard to season!
As I suggested to you; I
think the league should get
tougher with their thugs. For
example: all teams carry at
least two goal -tenders, when
one earns a penalty, he should
serve it - in the penalty box.
That might make the Hex-
tall's of the league think twice
before using his stick like an
axe! It doesn't take much guts
for a heavily armoured thug to
chop down a player not protect-
ed by layers of gear. And to
think Hextall actually profited
on his actions by playing the
"tough guy" on T.V. commer-
cials!
I've written the league several
times with this suggestion,
among others, but no reply.
Where does Zicglcr spend his
time? Not in his office or the
hockey rink, obviously.
Yours,
Gibby,
J.M. Gibson,
Exeter.

In squirt -action, Exeter I played
against Nairn 1. Exeter I played a -
strong game but could not get the
break they needed to get a tic after
Nairn had taken a 1-0 lead.
Adam Johns came close to put-
ting Exctcr on the score board but
the Nairn goalie carne out of no-
where to stop the ball from going
in.
Late in the game Nairn scored
their second goal for a 2-0 win.
Ben Rimnclzwaan and Jonathan
Triebncr supplied Exeter with excel-
lent goaltending. Exeter II played
Nairn II this week and after an even-
ly played match carne away with a
3-1 win.
Greg Geoffrey with two and Da-
vid Marshall were the Exctcr goal
scorers.
Jacob Bruxcr and Dawn Corbett
were outstanding for Exctcr II.
After losing their first game .last
week Exctcr III came right back
with a convincing 3-1 win over
Bryanston to stay in the running for
first place in the standings.
After five games, St. Columban
is sell undefeated.
Scoring in the win for Exeter III -
were Ben Cottrell, Ryan Beattie and
Adriaria Debont. Chris Frayne and
RyariiBeattie playcii an excellent
game.
'Exctcr I used their checking and
passing games to send Lucan home
with a 4-0 defeat in Atom play.
Chad Gilfillan and David Farquhar
scored two goals each and Billy
Kline and Scott Rasenhcrg starred
in the mid field for Exctcr I.
Adam Hcrn and Roy Hodgson
played well on defence.
Trevor Boersnia, Luke Sims and
Rob Lynn were standouts as Exeter
II came from behind in their game
with Coldstream to earn a well de-
served tic.
Rob Lynn'and Luke Sims were
the Exctcr goal getters.
In Mosquito action, Scan
McCann collected -a hat trick as Ex-
eter defeated Coldstream by a 5-2
score.
Marty DcBruyn and Trevor Taylor
also scored. Exeter was in control
throughout the game and the win
was never in doubt. Brian McAllis-
ter and Geoff Hann played well for
Exeter.
In girls under 11 action the Exctcr
girls have really put things togeth-
er. After an 8-1 win last week the
Exeter girls showed no mercy to
Coldstream this week. Led by a
three goal. performance by Sandra
Vandcrlaan, two goals by Mune
Lanlbert and singles by Sabrina
Johns and Theresa Sure, the Exeter
girls handily defeated Coldstream by
a 7-0 score.
In Pcc Wee action Exctcr 1 trav-
elled to Ildertan: Most Exctcr
players seemed to ttavc a lot 01
trouble with the heat and cane up
with a sub par performance. lldcrton'
dominated play and only good de-
fence by Darryl Beaver and Sharon
DcBruyn kept the score to 1=0 for
the lldcrton for most of the game.
Late in the game Marty DcBruyn
launched Mark Brintnell on a break-
away: Mark. made no mistake and
salvaged a 1-1 tic for Exeter I.
Exeter II rebounded from their
loss in Grand Bend last week in de-
cisive fashion as they trounced
Nairn by a 6-0 score. It was an ex-
cellent team effort. Sivichay Scngk-
hounmany scored four times and
Allen McFalls and Tonya Richt
each scored once.
In the boys under 17 division Ex •

eter was successful in both their
games. Against lldcrton the boys
took a while to get going against a
shorthanded team but in die end sol-
id midfield work by Justin
O'Rourke and Tim Mcaltister paid
off as Exctcr scored five times for a
5-0 win. Scoring for Exctcr were
Jason and Shawn McFalls, Peter
and Tim McAllisterand Ryan Itcrn.
In their second game of the week
against Strathroy• Exeter found
themselves in a shorthanded posi-
tion with only 10 players showing
