GRAND BEND - "It was incredi-
ble and I don't know how to do it
again."
That was Dave Scatcherd's re-
sponse to a two day evint blessed
with good weather, good spirits,
good golf and a good number of
people.
The Seventh Annual Dave
Scatcherd Invitational Classic, held
at Oakwood Inn near Grand Bend,
went off without a hitch.
"It was the best tournament we've
ever had at Oakwood and 1 don't
know how to do it any better,"
Scatcherd said of the event.
The main objective of the tourna-
ment is to raise money for the
Scatcherd Children's Centre in Lon-
don -- a facility which has helped
save hundreds of retarded children
from institutional care by giving
them a "head start" in life.
Proceeds from this years tourna-
ment have been put toward a brand
new 12 passenger van which will
be used by the Centre to pick the
children up at home and drive them
back and forth from the London fa-
cility.
Scatcherd turned over the keys to
the S24,000 vehicle during the final
dinner Wednesday night.
The invitational tourney featured
sport celebrities, among them for-
mer Toronto Maple Leafs Paul
Henderson, Darryl Sittler, and Dave
Hutchinson.
After a charity dinner Wednesday
night, a number of sports figures,
led by Father Joe Nelligan, assem-
bled to pay tribute to Alan Eagle-
son (Executive Director of the NHL
Player's Association and founder of
the Canad*Cup Series) with a light
hearted roast.
Bad weather seemed to threaten as
the roast got under way when a
thunder storm dumped rain on a
huge dining tent set up to accom-
modate more than 2(X) diners, but
Sittler managed to turn that in
Scatcherd's favour too. When a loud
burst of thunder drowned out the ex -
Leafs speech, he cooly remarked:
"That's from Harold Ballard, 1
guess."
The golf tournament was won by
a team from London, made up of
Darryl Wilkens, Kerry Wilkens,
Grant Caddottc and Tom Tripp.
Jim Bedard of Zurich won a mi-
crowave oven for coming closest to
the pin on number 18 while Emer-
son Desjardine of Grand Bend won a
colour TV in a draw.

FAST FRIENDS -- Dave Scatcherd (left) stops for a picture with Paul

able.
SHINANIGANS - Al Eagleson attacks Darryl Sittler after being present-
ed with a number of hats which he has supposedly worn over the years.
Some of the hats had more character than others.
Co-op Juniors on slide
EXETER - The action unfolded
unfavourably in the Great Lakes
Men's Baseball league for Exctcr
Co-op Juniors last week when they
dropped a 5-2 decision to Listowel
Thursday, then fell victim to Lake-
side in a double header Sunday.
Juniors were unable to come up
with the defensive play necessary to
win the game Thursday. Every Lis-
towel run was unearned.
Leading 2-0 at the beginning of
thc fifth, Exeter's opponents man-
aged to score three times without a
hit. Scott Russell came in to re-
lieve pitcher Terry Cox in the sixth
and managed to shut them down.
Exctcr scored in the fifth when
Cox singled and was brought home
by Brent O'Brien. Fred Grcgus sin-
gled in the sixth, stole second base
then came home on an error.
Lakeside handed Co-op Juniors
12-4 and 6-4 losses Sunday when
they played host to Exctcr.
Lakeside built up a 7-0 lead by
the end of the third inning in game
one.
In the fifth, a two RBI single by
Gregus gave Exctcr some hope, but
Lakeside matchcd that with two
more runs in the bottom of the in-
ning.
Errors allowed Darryl Little and
Doug Schade to score in the fifth
and sixth; but the effort was not
enough to earn them a win.
Lakeside again jimpcd out into
thc lead early in game two, scoring
three runs in the second. Three
more in the fourth put thc game out
of reach for Juniors who scored two
runs in the fifth and two runs in the
sixth.
Russell recorded a home run in
the effort.
