Times-Advocate, 1988-06-22, Page 13Royals drop two of three games
EXETER - Exeter Royals evened
their South Perth Fastball League
record at four wins and four losses
by losing two of three games in
the past week.
At home on Thursday, Royals
were led by veteran pitcher Brian
1{odgins who in his first start of
the year, limited Milverton to one
run in eight and one third innings
in a 3-1 victory.
Hodgins allowed seven hits,
walked one batter and struck out
eight.
Greg Wise earned the save by ie -
tiring both hitters he faced in the
ninth inning.
Leading Exeter at the plate was
centre fielder Brent Dawson with
two hits in three Mips. Also con-
tributing two hits were Doug Todd
and Tom Tordoff.
Hodgins, Pete Tuckey, Scott
Brintnell, Dan Heywood and Jim
Davis with an RBI, also chipped in
with hits.
Greys continue to dorninate
EXETER - Exeter Greys con-
tinued to steam -roll their way
through the South Perth Ladies
Fastball League with a pair of
lop -sided wins over Corbett and
Dublin.
Greys pounded Corbett 16-0
June 14, then destroyed Dublin
two days later with a 22-1 victo-
ry. Both games ended with the
mercy rule.
Greys wasted no time making
their mark on the scoreboard
against Corbett. Errors put Tam-
my Matters on base then pushed
her around the bags. She scored
on a single by Gail Bauerman.
Bauerman came home on a sin-
gle from Alice Dietrich who lat-
er scored on an error.
Bauerman made it 4-0 for Ex-
eter when she hit an RBI triple
to bring in Mathers.
Three more runs in the third
gave Greys a 7-0 edge and then
Corbett collapsed in the fourth,
allowing nine runs. Greys re-
ceived home runs from Brenda
Bell, Kendra Arthur and Sandi
Fremlin while Mathers notched a
double.
Patty Down was on the mound
for Exeter. She struck out 10 op-
ponents and gave up just one hit
in fivesolid innings of play.
Dublin drubbing
Greys mounted a steadier at-
tack against Dublin, though the
result was the same. Beginning
with three runs in the fust in-
ning, Exeter added seven in the
second. The game was effective-
ly over when the two teams en-
tered the third. Bonnie Caldwell
proved to be Greys' most prolific
batter, knocking out three RBI
singles in three attempts at bat.
Fremlin had a two RBI double to
her credit in the effort.
Greys scored 10 more runsin
the last three innings of the
game.
Dublin's only response came
in the bottom of the fifth. Laurie
Kay Rowland pitched an excel-
lent game for Greys, allowing
just two hits and one earned run.
Saturday in St. Marys, two runs
in the bottom of the eighth inning
broke a 2-2 tie as the Creamery Jun-
iors edged the Royals 4-2.
Losing pitcher Doug Leonhardt
went the distance for Exeter allow-
ing five hits and three earned runs.
He struck out seven and walked
three (two intentionally).
Dawson once again led the way at
the plate with two hits in three
trips.
Scott Brintnell added a double and
Larry McCarter singled.
Monday night in Sebringvillc
Royals allowed three runs in each of
Sp.orts
the second and sixth inning and
were unable to recover in a 6-3 loss.
Despite out -hitting the opposition
13-12 and closing a 6-3 deficit to
one run in the eighth inning, Exeter
were not able to overcome Sebring-
ville's second inning 3-1 lead.
On the offence, Dawson continued
his recent hot streak by stroking
three hits in four trips. Wise con-
tributed three hits with Pete Tuckey
and Brian Hodgins adding two hits
each. Doug Todd also hit safely
twice including a two run eighth in-
ning home run to make it close.
Brintnell, Dan Heywood and Hod-
gins shared the pitching with Hey-
wood taking the loss.
Exeter's next action is Thursday
as they visit defending league cham-
pion St. Paul's Generals.

game against Lucan III. It was a
closely played contest with Exeter
111 ending up on the losing end of a
2-1 score. The first loss in four
games for coaches Bert dcBont and
Bill Jones.
In Atom play Exctcr I managed
to squeak out a 2-2 tic with Lucan.
11. Lucan 11 was the better team
throughout the game building a 2-

Exctcr 11 with Steven Hem play-
ing excellent goal in the sccona
half came up short against a very
strong St. Columban team.
The Exeter lads were out -scored
3-0. Gcof Stasik and Trever Boer-
sma played well for Exeter II.
In Mosquito.action the goaltend-
ing of the Ste Columban goalie
proved too much for the Exeter
team.
Time and time again he foiled ex-
cellent scoring chances by Exeter
particularly in the first half.
In the second half Exctcr managed
to score" twice but it was not
enough and St. Columban went
home with a 3-2 win.
Goal scorers for Exeter were Tre-
vor Taylor and Marty DGbruyn. Per-
ry Kantzas played an excellent game
for Exeter.
The girls under 11 action, a six
goal performance by Daniel Lam-
bert led Exeter to an 8-1 romp over
Strathroy.
After a slow start the whole team
put it together in an all out effort
for the lopsided score. Erin McLeod
and Jane Ballantyne rounded out the
scoring for Exeter.
Goalie Cathy Wagner was -almost
unbeatable in this game.
The Pee Wee action both Exctcr
teams used Mosquito players in or-
dcr have a full team.
Exeter I took on St. Columban.
Exeter built up a 2-0 half time lead
but fell apart in the second half and
needed a late goal from a penalty
shot by Nick Szabo to salvage a
tie.
Szabo had a hand in the other two
goals scored by Marty Dcbruyn and
Jaimie Dougall.
Tim Brand and Peter Kantzas put
in an excellent effort foe'. Exeter I.
Exctcr II came up short in a good
effort against Grand Bend. The Bend
boys were just a little bit better and
full value for their 3-1 win.
In under 17 action the Exctcr boys
had a good week recording two shut-
outs. Goalie Graham Arthur was
not that busy but played well in a
6-0 win over Lucan.
Exctcr played some good soccer
and outhustled the Lucan players for
most of the game. Scoring for Exet-
er were Tim and Peter McAllister,
Dan Vandcrlaan and Jason McFalls.
Rick Topp played a solid game as
sweeper in Exeter's other shut -out
over a strong Delaware team.
Goalie Tim McAllister had to
make some good saves to earn his
shut -out.
Greg Lamport and Justin
O'Rourke scored for Exctcr. Full-
back Ray Bocrsma also played an
outstanding game.
In tournament play, Exctcr Atoms
participated in a tournament in Wal-
lacetown over the weekend. It was a
very good day for coach John Ra-
senberg and his charges. After win-
ning their first three games Exctcr
reached the A final and had to settle
for second as they were beaten 5-1
by a London Atom team.
En route to the final Exeter was
led by goal scorer David Farquhar
and his mates at forward. Farquhar
scored 10 goals in those three
games and the Exeter defence only
allowed four goals. In the end play-
ing four games in six and one half
hours with only two substitutes on
the side proved to be Exeter's down-
fall as the Exeter players ran out of
steam in the final. All in all a per-
fect showing by the Exeter kids that
they can all be proud of.
The preliminary games were Exct-
cr, Wallacetown 7-1, Exctcr, Shed-
den 5-2, and Exeter, Glencoe 3-1.

SPINNAKER START -- Sails blossomed out on Lake Huron near Grand Bend Saturday morning when the Grand
Bend 100 officially started. The race, which runs from Grand Bend to Bayfield, across to Port Sanilac and back to
Grand Bend via Kettle Point drew 70 boats. Though the breezes were light, the sights were impressive.
